Nice CNC! I love how quiet that air-cooled spindle is. I need to look into one a little closer. If I could give you a bit of unsolicited, absolutely "worth-what-you're-paying-for-it" advice, it would be to dive into Vectric's tutorials from within VCarve Pro and immerse yourself. It's just like anything else - the only way to get good at it is to practice, and the only way to practice is to do it. Save early, save often, and preview your toolpaths several times. Above all, have fun with it. Haters are gonna hate - the rest of us will be too busy having fun. Cheers!
@ScottTurnerformeindustrious6 жыл бұрын
Thank you Mark! I was totally surprised how quiet the spindle is. It's 3 phase brushless. Most of the noise in the video was the dust collector running in the background. Yes I've been getting into the Vetric videos. They are so good. haters gunna hate but so far everyone has been good in the comments. Thumbs down is all part of the game I suppose. There are a lot of CNC haters out there who will make comments about it not being hand made or there is no skill involved but you explained it very well by equating it to the rise of power tools compared to the old traditional hand tools. The “machine” will only do what the craftsman tells it to do. Power tools of any kind in the wrong hands will just make a pile of sawdust. I look forward to the future projects you take on and watching the creativity of yours that gets unlocked as the result of having this new power tool in your shop.

Thanks Wayne. I thought of a better way to put it, and I should have said this; This CNC will assist me with projects I wouldn't other wise attempt without it. So I'll be experimenting a whole lot with some new shapes and ideas and see what comes of it. There are heaps of better woodworkers out there that do traditional projects. I don't indent to perform work at that level. I'm more about pursuing a creative idea and learning from it. Most of what I have done is an experiment. I hope people understand that. Thanks for your support and understanding Wayne - all the best!

Scott Turner Anyone that has watched more than 2 of your videos should be able to see the “experimental” aspect of your builds and the creativity you put into them with many free flowing lines. If you make an adapter to hold a gas torch in the router head and jack your piece of steel up off the bed (so as not to cut it in half) you have a cnc steel cutting device.

Man, those have been my thoughts for a while too. I would need to upgrade my plasma torch to something like a thermo cut that starts it's arc without the feedback. Was also thinking of making an arm that attached to the router attachment that extended to a second Plasma bed, mmmm

I spent today building a table for a machine like this kzbin.info/www/bejne/enzbc39pgrCcZpqIhey are so cheap in China and they have been using them so long there is no mystique . In small ship yards I have seen them set up on bricks over a patch of dirt. Usually a kid about 16 doing the computer stuff and the builders scratch a sketch in the dirt with a stick , kid then inputs to the machine . Sometimes cutting 40mm plate,gas bottles laying all over the ground , making their own acetylene on site. Don't be afraid to experiment, The cnc will push around whatever is attached to the node.

You haven't trammed it yet. I've had mine for three years and could not get fine work to be accurate. Then I learned about tramming. I'm having to rebuild my base unit due to a 40 thousand of an inch deflection of the length of the Y axis. So for about another $300 US, I might get it down to a one thousands of an inch accuracy. Ah, the fun of discovery! VCarve Pro is really nice. It does more then what I know, but then in a few more years I might exceed it. The race is on!

Kevin Reardon Hi Kevin, thanks for the tip. I'll look into it for sure. I square up the cut on the X y axis but I'm sure it actually be improved using a dial indicator. All the best!

I learned a whole bunch by watching videos from oxtoolco. Tom works at Lawrence Berkeley Labs as a machinist. Watching his videos on setting work up just blew my mind on how to obtain accuracy from my equipment. I bought a Shark Pro a few years back and thought I was in heaven, and then I started watching Tom and then found now inaccurate the Shark was. Now I'm in the process of trying to obtain 0.001 accuracy.

Congrats! I've been eyeing a CNC for a couple of years, but as a hobbyist, it's tough to justify the cost. Question-- Will your machine handle cutting aluminum? I am considering either a kit build or a from scratch build, but I really want to be able to cut aluminum. Is that feasible with a kit like yours?
@ScottTurnerformeindustrious6 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Yes I bought this machine on the basis that it must perform well cutting aluminium. I haven't done so yet but it was designed to be able to do so. I was thinking scratch build myself, but opted for this machine as I am new to cnc and there is a lot to learn so I wanted a proven design. Also the time to design one yourself and build it needs to be factored. Cheers!

@@ScottTurnerformeindustrious Excellent; thanks Scott for the advice. Any other tips with the bench build? I've designed a relatively simple welded and bolted table, so I can pull it apart later if needed...just wondering if I should incorporate any fancy sliding tool cabinets or drawers or anything?
@ScottTurnerformeindustrious5 жыл бұрын
Yes, more fancy the better :) The bench will need diagonal bracing, well mine does as the cnc gantry is heavy, so when it moves and stops suddenly the table can flex. I need to mod my table. Get it all up and running and enjoy it for a bit. You'll work out what you need in terms of storage after that. All the best.

Hi Scott this is the exact model I was looking to purchase from Ben. I feel I would be ok with the assembly but the wiring/electronics has me a bit rattled. Did you find that part reasonably straight forward? If you were in the Brisbane area I would really appreciate a look at the machine. Cheers, Peter
@ScottTurnerformeindustrious6 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter. Well I was a bit intimidated I have to admit but really now that I've done it, it's quite simple. Ben has a video of setting up the GRBL circuit board which I found very helpful and the wiring diagrams of course I used. I turned it on for the first time and it worked, though I needed to amend some codes for the spindle. If you have done any wiring and have a basic electrical knowledge you should be fine. Ben is very helpful also, which is very important. If you buy any Chinese options off ebay, there will be no support. I am in Townsville but I'm happy to help with photos or what ever. So far I haven't done too much with the cnc but it looks very capable and it is large for a home workshop. I'm very happy with the choice. Sing out if you need help.

I can’t fault you one damn bit for embracing this technology, that being said, I’m terribly conflicted. I’ve been so impressed by your abilities to create with your hands that I fear this type of machine will, well, sorta end that. Not completely of course but it’s just another techno bleed into the creative process. Yes you gotta be smart as hell to program those things, and I guess I’m not, but “hand made” just seems to be dying. I guess I’m kind of a throwback, I do get “it” but, don’t you think it takes the spirit out of your build? I’m not a troll, please believe that, my most cherished item is a grandfather clock my passed father made. He hand carved his initials in the finials. I’ll leave it at that.
@ScottTurnerformeindustrious6 жыл бұрын
I know what you mean (and of course you're not at all being a troll). Well I have a great desire to explore many facets of creating and I feely strongly that technology needs to be part of the journey. This machine will force me to think on other levels of creativity. It will tie into some of the projects that I take on but not all. There is also a younger generation of makers, or future makers that need that trigger of inspiration to get them of the couch and into the shop using their brains and hands. I see this as another tool, another option that I can use to help me create. This machine will help me make things I wouldn't other wise attempt. Stay tuned. I hope to show you what I mean in future projects.Thank you so much for your thoughts - really appeciated!

Glad to see someone else posted this - but I'll second it. There are LOTS of folks out there who pump out hours and hours of mindless CNC videos. I agree, they're fantastic machines. We have (2) and we use them everyday. The magic of what you do, though... Forme Industrious... is much, much more than this. Not hating on CNC... just suggesting that your pieces are not only beautiful and inspirational, but as Hooper said.... handcrafted. (Sometimes painfully so, judging by the pile of grinding wheel stubs in your bin). I just want to vote in favor of the magic bits. Having said that, enjoy the new machine - in my experience, they are game-changing. I hope you figure out how to improve your game, without losing it! It's special!
@crystalsoulslayer6 жыл бұрын
The people who tend to use the CNC for everything are probably of the "CNCs will do it for you!" school of thought. Like, "Sure, there's a simple band saw jig that could cut out this circle faster and with less dust, but the CNC will Do It For Me!" As long as our man here understands they don't, I wouldn't think he'd overuse the thing. CNCs are a great way to avoid doing some kinds of really boring repetitive work, and their ability to reliably reproduce complex shapes opens up a lot of possibilities.

Happens to the best of us ;) its great to see someone post some video on the heavy mill as there is not much out there, it looks like a machine I'd like to own but routers always get a bad rap when milling aluminium plate, from what I have read selecting the correct grade is half of the battle 6061 is meant to be a good starting point as others can be tough or to soft and gum up your end mills. What sort of projects are you planning to use it for? for myself it would be prototype mechanisms, small furniture pieces and custom motorcycle parts, I work as a CAD designer so happy with that part but I am looking forward to the world of CAM, I wonder how much of a learning curve it is, but look forward to the challenge.

I haven't got any specific projects planned for metals yet. I will do some trial cuts and see how that goes but ultimately I would like to make some furniture projects with it. These machines you can pay some serious money for and of course they can do amazing things. The Heavy Mill was reachable in my budget but it's pretty solid so it should be able to handle a bit of punishment. I'll be learning for some time yet as far as CAM goes. I'm trying to learn Fusion 360 and Vetric V Carve Pro. It's all fascinating. You have CAD experience so CAM should be ok for you. There is a lot of help out there these days.

There is a lot of information, but in the end, I think it will come down to trial and error, hopefully more trial than error but its all part of learning :) be sure to posts some more updates, I'm subscribed and keen to see what you will make, you have already got some great projects on your channel. The Laminated Leg Stool would make a great addition to my workshop for when I'm welding.

That's how the owner of the business pronounces it, and my audience is largely US based english speaking. I say Zed all other times so rest easy ;)
