have a mig test in 6 days,, never touched a mig setup in my life.. as a shipfitter it was always stick, suddenly this year they want me to take a mig test before going back! luckily as a shipfitter all i gotta do is tack everything together so the test really isnt very strict.. my buddy passed it never running a mig setup either so im hoping with the help of youtube i can get through this as well!

Did u pass ,?
@gojjjddoooj Жыл бұрын
@@Xwaterwicca i sure did!! it looked like complete dog shit all uneven but they all passed the press test .. its inane how easy fluxcore is compared to other types of welding!!! in the past 2 months i went from looking like complete dog shit to being able to weld even and consistently! i haven't had a weld break yet no matter what force i put on it! i sucked at stick welding it was always hit and miss when i was fitting prior! another thing that helped me greatly was investing in a autotint hood. i got a killer one from harbor freight that has a very large viewing window! i can literally see the material im welding and the puddle VS the old school hoods where i just see the arc and that is all.

I would not even know what to do with a backing plate anymore. Loved them in welding school, but nothing I have done in my 2 years out of school enabled them. MIG, stick, and TIG. In school, we only used backing plates for flux core. We did only open root in school for MIG, TIG, and stick. Learning to open root flux core in my last shop to get that “cert” was a bitch. The plates had about a 1/8” gap too! When they first told me that we needed to do that, I looked at them like they had to be kidding. Damn good welders at that shop that they could all hit it. I could not but they hired me as a fitter anyway because I can read blueprints and am extremely accurate in my fitting (no matter the blueprint tolerances, my personal ones are always zero). I did weld simple things there. Fitters make more money and have more fun anyway.

I'll never understand why people hate on mig so much. Its so fun, it's not super difficult and you can produce some beautiful welds. I'm 3 months out from graduating trade school and I'm a week into mig about to take my first 3g bend test and I absolutely love it. Mig is definitely going to be my speciality
