I think what they meant with more realistic, could be based on graphics programming, so the shaders and materials, even when cs got more and more cartoonish, the term realistic in graphics programming is often used for the light formular for calculating light, and how close it is to the real world. Pixar for example is leading in some of those areas even when they do it in animated Movies, because even when the results look like a cartoon or not real at all the light calculation behind can be more "realistic". In cs2 and also in half life alyx we see alot of light improvements reagarding the lightcalculation especcialy whith the use of reflection probes and vulumetric lighting. Sorry for nerding out a bit, but it feels good to know sometimes something in the most random topics thanks!

I remember back in the early 2000's when i read in a gamemagazine about the freshly released Counter Strike: Source. Seeing pictures of the game i found it really gorgeus, but i didnt really know what its about and how is the gameplay (i only played arena shooters before that game). I have read pages about how everyone loses their minds about 1.6, and i watched the videos of lan tournaments on the discs attached to the magazines. All i remember distinctively is the glowingly yellow dust 2, and the minimalistic yellow hud. It was so different than most games at the time, the pictures about the game looked something so different and distinct from everything else back then. When CS:GO released i already felt that that era will be over, and with it the style and atmosphere the game had, and nowadays younglings wouldnt even understand how different and unique this game felt back in the days. Im really sad about the cartoonish design choice.. and im really sad that more and more games go to this direction. Even the ones i believed to resist the changing of trends..
