For all watching this thinking oh I am going to start a camper van building and rental business. NOTE where this guy lives… this business makes perfect sense for the demand in that market. Do not try this somewhere where tourists do not come to camp or hike nearby. YMMV lol 😂

I actually think the potential for this type business might be a permutation of airbnb. Build out vans that home owners in urban areas can rent and sit in their driveway as a sort of "ADU." Home owners provide power source, rental company provides potable water and drains the grey tank. You wouldn't get quite as high of rate because the intention wouldn't be to have them on the road, just a different kind of accommodation. The business model might look like: home owner rents van for $500/mo, company parks it in their driveway, gets the van set up and lists it on all of their platforms at, say, $100/night. Say the van is rented out 15 nights a month and earns $1500. The split might be 100% owner until they recoup $500, then 50/50 after that, or $1000 to the homeowner and $500 to the company.

As someone who had a camper van and was trying to find one for sale knows, the demand fire exceeds the supply, the nature of economics, especially the US many people living in these vans full-time instead of homes. Right idea at the right time

I was always thinking of starting this business since two of my friends own rental van businesses and it would be super easy to buy their old vans. But the problem was getting someone to remodel the inside. I didn’t have those connections. I told this idea to so many people and they all laughed. Anyways, I’m glad someone executed the idea 👍👍

I’ve been thinking about doing this with the box truck builds I’ve been creating for others recently but can’t decided if the risk is worth it. So many people can’t be trusted to drive a bigger rig and insurance games are sticky and no fun. After I’m done with Zac’s massive box truck conversion in a few weeks, I need to take some time off from building and travel while contemplating what the next step is. Possibly a rental service or possibly and expansion of the box builds TBD. Thanks for making this video, definitely have some things to ponder.

I think starting a business with a friend is something to be careful of. You have to fully trust that they are going to be available, productive and business focused with the idea of building a business as the goal. If you just pick a friend because they are your homie you go out and drink and game with... and don't do anything productive.. probably not a great idea.

Absolutely the most important thing.. and one thing I would NOT skimp on in one of these builds. Thing needs to be full size toilet and frankly share a space with decent sized shower too. Then there is the water tanks you need.. that's the big problem with these smaller vans. Great if you are ok crapping in the woods and showering with .1gpm sprinkle of water for about 10 minutes or so, but these are definitely set up more for driving/sleeping with some cooking options and then you set up a camp near it to stay warm (usually), crap/shower, etc. As someone who has to crap 5 times a day I would not be able to live without a full size toilet lol.

I love the idea, and the custom builds look amazing. But I gotta say looking at the sale prices.. upwards of 150K or more.. that is VERY steep. Not saying it's not worth it. But after looking at a Mercedez Tiburon for 155K.. it would be hard given how much more room, private bathroom/shower, bigger eating area, larger storage.. and though the gas mileage will be a bit less, just seems like an overall more luxurious/roomy/more comfortable arrangement while not being too much larger or harder to drive. That said.. as someone who does electronics (built LFP batteries + victron gear), wood working (tons of tools to do all the custom work with), and more, the idea of this business is very interesting. Surprised you can rent one of those for $200 to $300 a night though. That doesnt include gas or any places you camp at so the costs go up from there. Still.. I can see the alure especially for one person and say a dog, or two people to do some get away for a week or two.

Built correctly, it's no less safe than sleeping with the electric heat in your home. There are tens of thousands of people doing this daily. The biggest risk with LIFEPO4 chemistry is, if they get punctured, thermal runaway ensues (big, nasty fire). But the automobile accident that could cause this, you're likely dying from the crash than the potential fire.

In general, I'd say no, don't start with a friend unless they are very agreeable to your opinion. Might aound mean but it's really just about the time that you both waste trying to convince the other one and if your way doesn't work then you're friend is gonna feel some kind of way. The only way that I think it works is if omeach person has their "specialty"...like in this case, one person can be focused on builds and maintenance while the other is a marketing guru who also know how to get funding for growth if needed. As for the idea, I think it's awesome and there seem to be lots of copycats. Nevertheless, I would say to let the market dictate your decision. I would be happy with building one that pays for itself tbh. If I keep getting more demand, then maybe go for it. What I truly admire is that they are not having to dump money into the market to get into the market.

You ARE NOT getting full off grid with A/C, heat etc. With only 2 solar panels and a couple of batteries😂. Maybe if you stay in SoCal where it's always 70 degrees. Let it get 95 or 20 degrees and you have about 3 hrs of " comfort per day " before reality hits you.

@agillesp
@agillesp 17 сағат бұрын
A/C, no (although there certainly are builds out there that have enough solar to be consumption neutral). Heat, yes. Most vans run a diesel heater, tapped directly from the van's fuel system. They absolutely sip fuel and provide gobs of heat. Sure, it's not truly self-sustaining, fully off grid. But the amount of fuel consumed to provide heat is negligible compare to normal driving and fill-ups.

@UpFlip

@@UpFlip No, not right. Classic RVs need shore power. But most van builds run a charger from the engine in addition to solar. I personally have a huge house battery, no solar, but a high capacity DC-to-DC charger. Driving to each destination is more than enough to keep my house battery charged to a level that easily covers non-driving days.

When was the last time anyone saw a van commercial add...been a while or never. They keep shoving pick up trucks into our throats every damn day. I have an express van, best thing I ever got, my fishing gear never gets wet or stolen. The best thing, when I go fishing, no one knows I am there fishing, most think its a commercial and the workers are neaby so they leave it alone. The guys with 60k pick up, I hear their lamataions of gear being stolen or getting wet, the wind blew it out or it fell out, passengers are crammed like sardines in the back seat etc. The pick up truck looks so cool though. Idiots.

Wow, he just created so many competitors. Why would you tell the public your business secrets. If you have a successful business, you keep everything top seceret. You don't make a video on KZbin telling people how to do it unless you want a ton of competition to start taking income from you.

I don't like the idea of batteries under camper van beds, knowing what we know about EV batteries. It's difficult enough escaping an EV fire whilst one is awake, let alone being asleep if and when a battery fire breaks out.

Wayyyyy too much risk going into business with a friend. We sold our business almost a year ago because my husbands so called best friend was a complete dumb ass who is terrible with money and lazy. Drove us nuts to the point we just threw our hands up and sold. NEVER AGAIN. So bad we barely speak and I am glad!! Good riddance…..

That sounds like such a tough experience. Going into business with a friend definitely has its risks-glad you were able to move forward, even if it came with challenges. Hopefully, better ventures await you!

The biggest risk isn't starting a pre-tested and proven business. Him getting married is far more risky in many ways... it could affect his business partner, as well. Go forth and prosper- too many sad stories and bad stats nowadays to get married. Not smart anymore.

How do u stay on top of your employees to not build junk just like the quality contrpl of building rvs. I can see this turning into exactly that!

Great question! They focus on strict quality control and regular checks to make sure everything they build exceeds expectations-not RV standards.
