Latency is extremely important. I hear a lot of people say that you can't hear or feel a difference for anything under 10 ms but that is not my experience at all, far from it! And then, once you start adding other devices into the equation, just as Ola says, it adds up and can become a major hinderance to your playing.

A human can't percieve latency under ~5 ms and if you claim you can, you're wrong. 10 ms, sure, that's twice the amount. And it's obvious that it's the total latency in the chain that matters.

@@mrcoatsworth429 You're welcome to research the topic. You will find that under 5ms is perceivable by some people, especially those who are highly trained in a particular task in particular contexts. In some cases, like in Interaural Time Difference studies, the average person can perceive under 1 ms.

@@mrcoatsworth429 Play 16th notes at higher bpm and you will be surprised how a human can perceive latency under ~5ms by difference between ears and what you are doing with picking hand!

Speakers with internal DSP treatment (eq, room correction...) also add latency, and the manufacturers are very good at not telling how much.

Btw the 3ms for 1m distance is kinda inapropriate cuz if you have 3 ms processing latency at the start it will add to the distance latency. In any case its not good.

I found the old steinberg UR22 interface had unnoticeable latency but others that are marketed as zero latency that I have tried seem to have noticeable latency yet are more modern in design with higher spec features

Yes! I have the UR824! I've had mine for something like 10 years and it is incredible. I use it for my live feed from fractal to UR824 to front of house, along with backing tracks and synths. Steinberg is the way to go imo.

I don’t know if we’re talking about recording, but what I do is use a DI box to split my signal and route a DI into my DAW and the other line through a preamp pedal going into a cab sim pedal which I use to monitor. It sounds kinda like ass, but I get zero latency for recording without pissing off my neighbors
@mrcoatsworth429

If those are a digital preamp and cabsim, then you are still getting some latency. But probably only a few ms.

2ms delay is enough to "thicken" a mix. You CAN hear it if you go to 3 and 4ms, it sounds like more of a slap delay. To test this on your own, record a track into Pro-Tools or whatever, duplicate the track, then play both tracks at the same time. Move the 2nd track forward 1ms, then 2 and so on. See where it gets thick, then hear it get slappy as you get to 4 and 5ms. Latency matters.

There’s also latency with analog equipment, it not just limited to digital.
@mrcoatsworth429
@mrcoatsworth429 2 ай бұрын
What kind of equipment are you talking about? Acoustic, sure. Electrical, absolutely not. Electrons "travel" through a conductor at nearly the speed of light. This is faster than anybody could possibly comprehend. You'd need over half a million meters of wire to get a latency of more than 3 ms.
@raelik777
@raelik777 2 ай бұрын
@@mrcoatsworth429 Yeah, true analog equipment modifies the waveform "in-situ" as it were, with effectively zero latency. This isn't even about the electrons, per-se, as the sound being produced isn't dependent on the electrons directly. It's the oscillating electric field created by those electrons pushing back and forth, and any piece of true analog gear in the signal chain is just modifying how the waveform generated by that oscillating field behaves. If something in there causes latency, it's because there's an ADC/DAC involved and the signal goes digital at some point.

How are you getting 1ms RTL? What audio interface are you using? The only thing I know that may get 1ms is possible a UAD interface using native SHARC-DSP powered plugins. Did I miss something in the video maybe I overskipped?

If you connect your guitar vida cable to analog pedals, then to an analog amp, analog cab, analog microfone, analog mixing desk and analog tape recorder, you'll have no latency. At least not a perceptible one. 🍷🗿

What interface do you use to get 1ms latency? I play live and rehearsals through neural dsp archetype inside of Steinbergs VST Live and the latency is about 9ms. If I lower the buffer the pc starts to freeze a bit. Ive used steinberg mk2 and behringer interfaces. Also cozld you just make a video touching that stuff? Explaining how you did your setup and how to reduce latency?

I use a BOSS GT-1 (1.1 -.1.3 latency) and just started kicking my buffers to 128 or 256 because I''m doing more complex work. I see notices of 6-8ms now but I don't feel it..if that's an even real SW estimate. I can def feel 8-10ms

Humans can tell the difference between actual latency (delayed signals) and distance-related latency. We hear in 3D, we’ve evolved to adjust to the latency of a distant signal. We haven’t evolved to adjust to the latency of a digital signal processed late

@@mrcoatsworth429 Try it out yourself, it’s a very easy test. Raise your buffer size until the latency adds 10ms. You’ll feel the latency. Lower your buffer size, and stand 3.5m back. You won’t feel the latency anywhere near as much.
