In Part 1, I install a trans cooler and magnefine filter:
• 3rd Gen Honda Odyssey ...
My transmission has been acting up a bit, missing a shift once in a while. I thought I was out a transmission, but after finding a link about replacing some switches and installing a cooler, I think I may have an easier fix than full replacement at 125k miles.
Of course, this is no silver bullet, but it seems to have helped.

Thanks for taking the time to put this video together. You helped confirm my thoughts on (if or not) there was a filter and how to change it.

Thanks for the video. My 2012 Nissan Altima has a similar filter that the dealership doesnt know about. During the weekend when I'm off from work I'm going to attempt to change that filter out of cooler and also add that magnifying external filter in hopes to prolong in the life of the transmission. I also like how Honda and Nissan almost seems to have the same kind of transmission filter housing

Sometimes it may be a software issue. I have a 2010 Acura MDX which I bought used at 200,000km and had a shudder when downshifting at 40k an hour. I did multiply drain and fills and even changed the filter. Did not fix it! I went and got the software updated and now it works perfectly! It's been more than 6 months now and still works great. If a person does the drain and fill every 30 to 50k depending on how you drive, a drain a fill will do just fine and won't need a filter change. My friend who is a Honda mechanic said they don't change the filter, just do drain and fills. I guess if the vehicle has been badly neglected a filter change would be necessary. When I did the filter change, even at 200k it didn't look like it needed to be changed. Hopefully this helps someone.

HI, I just did this trans filter job on my 2006 Ody. Removing the battery, battery box and battery support made the job really do-able. I could easily get to the 3 10mm bolts and the 17mm banjo bolt.

Nice. It has been a while since I did it, but I feel like the ABS junk was in the way of that one bolt. That really hurt my hand. I get to do a water pump on the van this Saturday. Boo!

We have a 03 oddyssey right now. Was wondering if its another bad idea to buy a 2005 to 2007 oddyssey or ill be running into transmission problems again? Im hoping itll be ok cause it is very hard to find 8 seat vans and i really like the interior. We are about to have 5 children so we really need a van.

Next time ..... take off the 3 bolts to the ABS module lines .... Then lift it a little and hold it up with a screw driver . The trans filter right under it will be sooooo much easier to replace. I just did mine .. Make sure to tighten the 3 screws on the filter TIGHT . Also the big screw goig i the middle of filter housing. Otherwise it will leak. After filter change and fluid change , Check for leaks... before putting everything else back on .

A bungee cord holding the ABS manifold up about 1 1/2" - 2" makes a great deal of difference for access. And it's actually the A/T cooler filter.

I got a 2005 EXL (176k miles) last week & it passed inspection. Thereafter, been experiencing intermittent downshifts (D3 light comes on next to D, rpm goes up & speed drops). Do you think an ATF flush with the filter & 3rd+4th gear switch change as shown here can help? No related codes throwing up on scan (I am getting a P0420 for a rear Bank 1 Catalytic Converter, but that is a different issue, I think). Thank you for the videos, they are helping me familiarize with my vehicle.

I had similar issues with the intermittent downshifts at low speeds/hesitant when cold to upshift...I had gotten lax in changing the fluid (put 30-40K on it since last flush)...Did drain and fill 3X (follow Honda specs/USE honda oil only) and that solved my issue. Going to change my filter this weekend 150K on it.

Never flush. Just change by gravity even if you do it twice. Worse thing you can do it take old vehicle with lots miles and flush it.

Dumb question probably, But here goes. I just changed the fluid and now I have a blinking D light the code (P0873) tells me its 4th clutch pressure sensor. I plan to buy 3rd and 4th sensors tomorrow. Any idea how much fluid I will lose changing them out?
@SquishyBrained
@SquishyBrained 9 жыл бұрын
Christy Holton I don't think when I did mine the fluid was still in it, I think I drained it first. I imagine though you could take out the last threads and get a thumb on it real fast and not lose much at all. As I recall they are pretty accessible. Either way I think you can dipstick it back to the right level, so just grab one quart and hope you don't spill much. I imagine it'll come out like changing the oil though, so you'll have to act quickly.
@CashApp-HelpMeStayAlive

Try Catch the oil with a Cup and then put the same oil back in . Or have the new preassure switch ready before u loosen the on on there. That way you can swap them out SUPER fast and avoild more than a tiny bit of oil leak. Im just thinking .

Evan Jensen Its a smart idea from a safety standpoint. Also resetting the ECU might be needed so codes can be cleared and trans can "relearn" or "learn" that new switches were installed?

good news.... the solution may be the top filter replacement! I found my filter at 147kMi smashed on one side. Since I replaced it even the engine runs without misfire vibrations at idle. I am not exactly sure if it was improperly installed at factory or if it's because the glue was falling apart but ONE THING IS CLEAR: THAT FILTER WAS BYPASSED BY OIL FLOW AND USELESS because it was breached. So hurry and change yours with genuine OEM (O-ring etc) around $30.
