People hate priuses but honestly if you have fun cars to drive having a reliable car that gets great mpg is never a bad thing. You won't have to worry about things breaking left and right like the merc

So true.. got my fun Volvo S80 project car for the occassional weekend dates and special occassions but 95% of the time my wife and I use our Prius for errands and just going to work, a-b type stuff. It's unreal how much we have saved having a Prius, no regrets! The Prius is getting so much more poplular as time goes on... I've had friends and coworkers come to me saying they are looking/need a Prius for affordable transportation blah blah blah and I just smile and agree.

To take the entire EGR assembly out, I used an extra reach 12 mm racheting wrench for the three 12 mm Nuts in the back if the EGR cooler, took me a while to reach the 4th hidden 12 mm Nut underneath the EGR cooler. Used a Torx E8 socket and 1/4 inch drive finger wrench to remove the two stud bolts in the back of the EGR cooler to finally free out the EGR assembly

You were close when you were talking about EGR cooler. That is the main place where soot clogging occurs, as passages are pretty small. I took my EGR cooler off at 170K miles and it was completely clogged up with soot. I could not even see any day light through it when held up against the sky. That meant of course that EGR was completely off line with no exhaust gas recirculation occuring at all.

Awesome video of some good preventative maintenance. Some models of Toyotas are known for sludge issues. Might not be a bad idea to pop the valve cover and inspect under it. On my Tacoma i did and found a ton of sludge. I guess the prior owner didn't change oil enough. My oil pan had a ton, clogging the oil pickup screen causing low oil pressure. which in turn was making the valves tap.

Thanks for the video. If it is 2010-2012, yes oil consumption from soft cylinder rings and head gasket leak at around 150k miles. After 2013, Toyota revised the head gasket and cylinder ring and no more oil consumption nor head gasket leak. The intake and below throttle body in 2013-newer is still wet from mixture oil+gasoline mix from blow-by but no problem at 100k miles yet.

Tips to PREVENT HEAD GASKET FAILURE: 231K - 2013 Prius. Just had head gasket replaced for $1,500. Could of prevented it if I cleaned/replaced EGR cooler my second run around 80K or 90K miles? Maybe it happened to me a bit sooner because I cleaned my EGR cooler out about 90% +\- at 130k miles, + 1000 miles/week, 50K/yr. and maybe because of potentially more cold/heat cycles on the head gasket. Lots of people highly recommend 3rd gen prius owners clean or replace EGR cooler AT or BEFORE you hit every 100K miles. EGR cooler $178 new on ebay, $300 at toyota, part #25601-37010. Clean EGR pipe and valve with the intake manifold/throttle body. Replace PCV valve, optional oil catch can. X At 230K miles my EGR cooler was completely blocked up with soot (previous cleaning at 130K). My symptoms were brief misfire on #2 couple times every 100 miles and slow engine coolant leak into the engine. #2 spark plug and #2 set of 4 valves were pretty dirty. Head gasket and cylinder head was replaced with refurbished one. (6,000/3month warranty). Car runs great so far. 4th gen prius has improved this problem.

Not quite true. It happens for many Prius models that have a PCV valve design and also an oil control ring issue in the pistons that affected several different Toyota models in the late 2000's to mid 2015's (known issue from the factory). Toyota later went on to rectify the issue. Even still, the Prius has proven to be a very reliable car if properly maintained.

I’m in the middle of doing all of this EGR Prius maintenance bull crap. I just bought the car and should have done more research. After the first week of buying it I noticed weird shaking/vibration and thought it was suspension/tire related. I paid a shop to look into it and even they said it’s probably tire balancing or CV axles. That was a waste of money. After tons of internet research I find out it’s this EGR stuff. Now I’m tearing it all apart trying to fix it. I just hope I remember how it all goes back.... 😭

No noise or sign on dash board. Plugs changed 100k ago. After engine kicks no problem at all no matter how fast I drive. But as soon as I go up at speed 30-40 and time to push engine I feel small hitch like engine starts 1 second later than it should start actually . Any suggestions bro. Thanks

Nice video. I am about to clean EGR for my Prius V with 190,000 miles for the first time. Is it necessary to disconnect Hybrid Battery System ( Orange Plug to High Voltage battery. I don't want to disconnect and end up with some codes. I'll disconnect 12v battery since it's simple. I am thinking of soaking it in a small bucket of gas overnight and pressure wash it next day . Is that good idea. Also. once I clean manifold , can I reuse the same gasket or do I have to put a new gasket ( if it is not expensive). I subscribed Thank you

If there's any clogging in the EGR pipe or valve, you can bet the EGR cooler (the box-like extension behind the valve going to the exhaust manifold) is completely clogged. That's where there either is a problem or will be a problem. Those are more difficult to get out as there are coolant lines, etc but it's still a good idea to clean that out thoroughly. After removing the valve, put a tube on there and blow air toward the exhaust/catalytic converter. If air won't pass through easily, that's where the problem is. Figure on sending at least 3 cans of carb cleaner through the cooler (after removing it) or just get a new one.

If the thermostat has not been replaced recently replace it on general principles. Thermostats don't last forever and Toyota hybrid system are *very* sensitive to engine coolant temperature. The first gen fuel economy would drop 30-40% in winter because of overcooling. If the spark plugs are near the 100K mile mark, replace them now. If top tier gasoline has not been used most of the time (I never put anything but top tier in my Prius... they carbon up easily) add a bottle of Techron to the tank. The problems with drops in fuel economy are almost always one of these three things. [Nothing but Prius since 2002]

Yeah maybe, but you also have to drive a Prius like a regular car now and then. If you always baby it for optimum gas mileage you will never achieve enough oil pressure to blow it out. That's when everything starts getting clogged up. Like the oil rings. You may get the best mileage driving eco all the time but your also chancing the oil burning problem.

Hey man love your content But Don't really like seeing Priuses getting fixed, I didn't subscribe for this. I know it's a me being picky but I would like you replacing the Benz for something like classic luruxy like 60's or 70's Cadillac, Lincoln, Chrysler... Or even an other Mercedes!
