Just got my 2016 back from dealer $772.23... But after watching your struggles I am glad I let them do it The charged for 2.6 hours of labor after a 159.95 diagnostic charge...

Haha yeah I don’t blame you there on this one I kinda wish I had them do it. I would check to see if you start leaking any transmission fluid from that sensor after the replacement. Some places use heat to remove the sensor but that will damage the transmission seal behind that sensor. And the only way to replace that seal is to drop the transmission mission and open up the transmission case to replace that seal.

I was scared of this same job on my old 2005 2nd Gen but your response helped motivate me to just buy the part and do it. Was luckily way easier than the 3rd Gen appears to be - anyway thanks for the report on yours!@@Gen-Blaze There's also a 2-min video on YT by Cheap Rent & Fast cars on a 5th gen 4runner that was laid out exactly like my 2nd Gen and was super helpful.

Would it be possible to put a hole in the floor so we can access this thing easily? Jeep owners used to make a hole so they could access a transmission sensor.

Yes that would give you significantly more room however because that heat exchanger is both for the engine coolant and transmission fluid you would need to bleed the coolant afterwards as well. If you loosen the hardline up top it will give you just enough room to get everything in and out the main pain is the ass is the fact the sensor welds itself to the shaft…

I used a pencil butane torch to break the corrosion and the switch came right off

you can bypass the SNS. Turn on truck, put in Neutral and then it starts.

Sadly you can’t due to the only way your truck knows you are in neutral is by this position switch. If you disconnect it you will be unable to start the truck regardless of if your shifter is in neutral or not. You could purchase a spare sensor and leave the switch in the neutral position and plug it in to start the truck but I wouldn’t recommend it because I’m not sure what happened when the switch is in neutral but you shift to drive or reverse or park.

Does this switch control the ignition? I get the key stuck in ACC trying to turn the engine off

My truck is push button start so I’m not sure if it effects the key or not I know I could not start my truck when the sensor was disconnected. But I could turn on ACC power

Yeah it’s in the same exact place and you guys don’t have a transmission warmer so it should be way easier to replace

My check engine light came on and the guy told me not you worry about it. When I bring it in for an oil change in the next few weeks he’ll take care of it. I have a real distrust when it comes to mechanics because I’ve been fuck over so much. Should I get it fixed right away or can I actually wait? If I do need to replace it how much do you think it should cost?

If I had to guess this job should be somewhere between 450 & 750 depending on the labor rates in your area and the time the shop quotes. The sensor when i bought it was 155 with tax. You can drive for a bit this this code but once the sensor full fails it will leave you stranded wherever you are. So like one day it shorted to an open circuit and my truck wouldn’t start at all and I was snowboarding 2 hours from home. Luckily when the sun came out it warmed up enough to remove the moisture and I was able to get home but I replaced it that same day into the following day because I didn’t want to get stuck in the same situation…. And have to get towed all the way home or attempt to replace it in the ski resort parking lot.🤣

@@DomDemeo what’s weird is I’m not having the issues people are describing. Only issue I’m having is the shifter gets hard when it rains and is cold. Other than that the truck runs fine. I’m not having any issue with my truck getting stuck in park or neutral. I really hope it just needs to be cleaned and lubed. That’s what my mechanic said he’s going to do next time I get an oil change.

Damn, mine just went out too code p0705. Been progressively harder to shift, let girlfriend take truck for 5 minutes comes back and it throws this code…

Lol it’s pretty common knowledge 3rd Gen is from 2016 to 2023 and this applies to 4Runner & Tundra as well they share a similar transmission layout but are different units internally obviously.
