This is my personal opinion, all Kaiba cares about is power and fame. And this was evident in the Battle City Arc. And he only helped Yugi with Fiend Sanctuary, after Mokuba talked some sense into him.

because kaiba was forced at a young age to rely on ambition to get by...in his own words,he wasnt proud of everything he did but he did it because he had to....and when you spend your entire life in that state it becomes pretty deeply ingrained in a person. creating his insatiable,almost paranoid need to be in control and on top at all costs so nobody can get the better of him....this is what led to his insecurities that surround his superiority complex and why he looks down on everyone,even Yugi whom he considers his rival and near equal. joey represents the spontaneousness and joy that kaiba had to abaondon a long time ago and thats likely why he hates him so much.

It's interesting because Kaiba and Joey aren't actually that different, if you think about it. They both have a younger sibling they protect fiercely, they both like to talk smack, and they're both very proud. The difference is that Joey has never really let his past hold him back. He learned and grew from it thanks to Yugi. Kaiba is consumed by his past and thinks that the only way forward is to remove the truly human part of himself. I mean, even Mokuba felt like Kaiba was sort of pushing him away. He was isolating himself and trying to forget their past back when Kaiba actually smiled. I think that's the true reason he thinks Joey is weak. It's because he's able to show his emotions in a way Kaiba doesn't. That's probably why he respects Yugi. Atem is more reserved, he has emotions but he also tends to be very serious and that's probably more Kaiba's language.

If I had to re write this duel, I would end it in a draw. The reasons: 1. Both guys just came off two big loses, so a draw would protect both instead of one. 2. It shows that Joey is not only powerfull enough to witstand the power of the strongest egyptian god, but if he worked harder and got better cards he could legitimatly defeat Kaiba. 3. It would change the dynamic between them, Kaiba would still view Joey as an inferior (with the only way to prove him wrong is by defeating him), but he would take joey more seriously as a duelist after he stopped being a hateful dick.

I like how Mokuba inherited his brother's cope skills, especially after what Kaiba said about not needing anybody else before the duel. "Joey, you did okay, but you're still no match for my brother." Dude, your brother had 700 LP left, no hand traps, and Time Wizard's effect was _in the process_ of destroying his only monster. If Thousand Dragon had been able to attack directly, Kaiba would've lost; Interdimensional Matter Transporter is the only thing that saved him from getting knocked on his ass by a high schooler with a crippled rogue deck who wasn't even supposed to be in his tournament to begin with. Even Yugi didn't put up as much of a fight against Kaiba's Crush Card as Joey did. I'd say he did a bit better than just 'okay.'

While it seems the smarter play, and what Joey should have done (certainly, were one playing this in real-life and could read their opponents cards and check Kaiser Sea Horse's effect, one would of course have taken it out instead to prevent a quicker two-tribute summon), it actually would have meant a quicker loss. Had Joey done that, Kaiba would have only one play: revive Kaiser with Monster Reborn to tribute it for Blue-Eyes and crash into Joey's stolen Blue-Eyes. Kaiba thus wouldn't be able to revive it - but he'd still have Blade Knight and take out Hayabusa Knight that turn (honestly, that would have been the better play for Kaiba too, his pride just had to return the stolen Blue-Eyes to his field even if it meant letting Joey keep a weak wall monster a turn longer). Then, Joey summons Baby Dragon in defence, Kaiba flips it to Attack with Stop Defence, and with the inflicted damage from Blade Knight attacking being less than 2000, Joey can't activate Nutrient Z, so he loses 2 turns earlier. I did theorise what alternate paths to victory could be possible if Joey used Graverobber to destroy Blue-Eyes earlier, thus keeping some Sheep Tokens for some extra turns. I don't even care if Joey lost this duel to Kaiba. He still proved to be a force to be reckoned with by stealing his blue-eyes against him. Despite the many times Kaiba insulted him, he still should know that when you give an opponent to chance to strike, they're going to take it and surprise the hell out of you. That's why he used that crush card combo on him. Because whenever Joey can summon and actually keep them on the field, he has some pretty powerful monsters that can win the duel for him. Kaiba's just a cowardly, stuck-up brat.

Joey could've won if he summoned Baby Dragon instead of Gearfried at the start in addition to placing Grave Robber face-down against Kaiba to get the Crush Card virus trap early on (Grave Robber literally takes a card from the opponent's graveyard, and the Crush Card trap fits the criteria perfectly), and infect Baby Dragon with the virus the moment Kaiba attacks, therefore infecting all of Kaiba's strongest monsters (including all three Blue-Eyes White Dragons) in the process.

Over the years, I've looked at this duel every which way to see if Joey could have won at all. Nothing seemed to work: even using Enemy Controller to take control of Blue-Eyes instead was squashed once the Japanese effect text was clearly read to only do the things it does in this episode (the floating over just being for dramatic effect),. But I did recently go ahead and figure out what would have happened if Joey used Graverobber earlier (he had it from the first turn: the dub editors at 5:36 evidently couldn't make out what the Japanese original had at that small size, but originally it was the correct Nutrient Z and Graverobber, which matches with reverse-engineering the duel). Read on if you're curious. No valid target that would help him out comes until La Jinn is destroyed, so he "could" steal it when he summons Little Winguard (and pray he doesn't then use the Legendary Sword he doesn't, as if Kaiba steals that Blade Knight is still ahead). But even that move would only knock Kaiba down to 1200 LP from destroys Blade Knight with it and attacking directly with Little Winguard. Joey would lose next turn once Kaiba uses Enemy Controller and Cost Down to tribute La Jinn for Blue-Eyes and attack Little Winguard for game. The first helpful point comes once Kaiba summon the first Blue-Eyes. Joey could use Enemy Controller to destroy it there and then, much earlier than he does here thereby meaning he only takes three attacks against wall monsters that turn and the next instead of five, leaving him with two Sheep Tokens when he makes his Monster Reborn comeback. At this point, if Joey still attacks Blade Knight with the revived Blue-Eyes, the rest of the duel proceeds the same as the above, except Joey still has two Sheep Tokens. Kaiba might attack one of them rather than Hayabusa Knight, dealing 1000 more damage. Whether he does or doesn't, those two extra tokens means that at the end of the final turn above, Joey is left with one token and either 1700 or 700 LP, leaving the rest of the duel up to speculation as to his next draw, with both duelists having empty hands and back row, and Kaiba with his two dragons and Joey has an empty field. I fully crunched the numbers: with all Joey's know draw power cards and useful revival cards spent (even if Kaiba somehow got Question wrong, Crush Card Virus would keep Gearfried trapped in the graveyard) and literally no monsters in his deck (he uses every known one to this point with under 1500 ATK in his duel), his options are very slim. Actually, of the fifteen Magic/Trap cards he used during Battle City left (not counting the Virtual World arc and ignoring the lost Red-Eyes and Weevil's sneaked Parasite Paracide, Joey uses exactly 40 unique cards in this arc, though he must have a 41st, given he removed Swordsman of Landstar during the Battle Royale duel), 13 are bricks in this situation: Energy Drain, Fairy Box, Foolish Burial, Giant Trunade, Lightning Blade, Polymerisation, Question, Salamandra, Shield & Sword, Skull Dice, Gamble, Kunai with Chain & Magical Arm Shield. Only 2 are left to draw: Roulette Spider (depending on how it counts empty spaces, Joey has a 1/4 or a 1/6 chance of winning if the pinned Blue-Eyes attacks Kaiba directly; if it attacks the Twin Thunder Dragon, Joey's last Sheep Token can buy him a turn long as Kaiba gets no more monsters; an empty space or himself is a loss) and Chasm of Spikes (destroys an attacking monster and deals 1/4 of its ATK as damage). The latter card would win Joey the duel regardless of what Kaiba attacks with, as they're both 2800+ in ATK and he has just 700 LP, unless he top-decks backrow removal (which he hasn't been shown to play in all of Battle City, though few do this early in the franchise) or summons a weaker monster to attack with instead (unlikely, he places pride on Blue-Eyes and never backs down). Or Lord of Dragons to protect Blue-Eyes from the trap. Regardless, even the above speculation assumes no duelist plays cards we haven't seen, but it gives Joey a 6-8% chance of winning. We've seen tighter comebacks, but… yeah. And of course, this scenario is not as exciting or dramatic from a writing standpoint, so out-of-universe even if they'd let him win, it would never have happened. One added note to the above: many have said Joey should have destroyed Kaiser Sea Horse rather than Blade Knight with the stolen Blue-Eyes, but this would have forced Kaiba to use Monster Reborn on Kaiser for his 2nd Blue-Eyes to crash into Joey's, and then destroyed Hayabusa with Blade Knight. Meaning Joey would lose next turn as he's only lose 700-1100 LP from Stop Defence leaving Baby Dragon vulnerable, too little to use Nutrient Z. HOWEVER: if we combine this with Joey using Graverobber earlier, Joey has two Sheep Tokens alongside Baby Dragon here, and IF Kaiba had set the rest of his hand the prior turn after destroying Hayabusa with Blade Knight to raise Blade's ATK to 2300 again (doesn't happen in this series if the cards aren't gonna be used right away, but here it might make sense to make him a bit more secure), and used Stop Defence on a 0 ATK Sheep Token, Joey could use Nutrient Z, surviving with 1800 LP. Meaning, when Time Wizard succeeds, Interdimensional Matter Transporter would only briefly save Blade Knight before Thousand Dragon destroys it in battle (reducing Kabia to either 400 or 100 LP, depending on if it keeps the Legendary Sword equip when briefly leaving the field; obviously it wouldn't in real life, but given Slifer didn't reduce XYZ Dragon Cannon's ATK when it returned in the Coliseum duel, the card seems to read more as an attack/effect dodge than leaving the field). Twin-Headed Thunder Dragon would then still destroy Thousand Dragon, leaving us same as the above, except Kaiba only has a weaker dragon, not Blue-Eyes as well. This makes two more of Joey's potential top-decks useful: Kunai With Chain to flip the fused Thunder Dragon to defence and buy himself an extra turn, and Energy Drain (he failed this the one time he used it against Mako, but it seems to reduce an opposing monster's ATK to 0 and allow one to draw a card, going by its card text). And even if Joey bricked, long as Kaiba does too, Joey has one more Sheep Token to buy another draw. Still, even those two extra cards would just buy him more draw time, and require Kaiba to brick once or twice: they slightly increase the % chance of getting Roulette Spider or Chasm of Spikes by lowering the odds from 2 in 15 to 2 in 14 or 13, but those two remain his only actual outs. His odds of winning only go up to almost 10% even in this best-case scenario (again, assuming no new cards for either duelist are added, which of could would have been were the anime writers doing this). Lastly, one gamble Joey could have taken: steal Card of Demise with Graverobber. Assuming he waited until his turn like in the episode to use the bandit, and set Nutrient Z and Pot of Greed first to draw the full five cards, then used Pot of Greed afterwards for a hand of seven, he’d have Hayabusa Knight, Monster Reborn, Baby Dragon, Time Wizard and three cards we can only speculate on. Maybe they’d help, maybe not, but with Kaiba (stupidly) not having set the Matter Transporter he already has in hand, if Joey wins with Time Wizard, he has game, only needing to use Monster Reborn on Blue-Eyes (or La Jinn if aged monsters by Time Wizard are off limits or banished, say, though by this point in the series they send it be just destroyed), or really anything alongside his own Baby Dragon and attack for game. 1/2 to 1/3 chance depending on if Time Wizard is 50:50 or follows the actual layout of its wand. Much higher odds!

Let’s be real, by all accounts Joey is the 3rd placer of battle city. If Marik hadn’t cheated with the shadow game, Joey would’ve won against him. And Joey getting so close here just shows how strong a duelist he became in this arc….even if he does rely a little too hard on chance. RNGesus loves Joey a bit too much lol

It's a shame too, because I can see several mistakes Joey made that would have given him the win if he hadn't made them. For instance, not attacking Kaiser Seahorse. Joey already knew Kaiba's monster that he did target couldn't beat his Blue Eyes, so why did he focus on that one instead of one that more than likely has some kind of ability he didn't know of yet? Also, why didn't he just use Enemy Controller on Blue Eyes to take it, then use monster reborn on something else? That would have given him enough offense to take Kaiba out in that very turn.

And destroying Kaiser sea horse would’ve caused Kaiba 1,300 points of damage vs blade knight 1,100 points of damage big mistake.

Joey would have had the advantage over Kaiba for longer and might have had a chance at winning when he took control of Blue Eyes White Dragon if he used him to destroy Kaiser Sea Horse instead of Blade Knight. What annoys me about this duel is the plot required that Joey lose. Joey would have won this duel had he attacked Kaiser Sea Horse, as without it, Kaiba would not have been able to summon BEWD at all. If you reverse engineer the duel from that point on, Kaiba could not have come back at all.
