I've seen some production footage from this incredible number. Notice that the whole sequence before he falls down the manhole is one continuous shot - it took a lot of takes to get that down. These are true professionals who can make every take look so sharp and fully energetic. Beautiful end-product.

They were 3D glasses that I'd never seen before: one side was black, the other side was clear. It was that contrast of light and dark and constant motion that gave this illusion of depth. Neat effect. And if you ever wanna see the 3D, just take a pair of cheap dollar store sunglasses and knock the right lens out.
@engarneering4 ай бұрын
This was done with pulfrich effect glasses, notice it's always moving sideways. You can see this in 3d like it was broadcast if you look at it but cover one eye through some sunglasses. That's how it was done then, the glasses they gave away at the grocery store for the special event had one dark lens. I think I might still have some of the barqs glasses.

From one of the best episodes of a brilliant sitcom, the 3D dreams sequences! How fun is this, and so much was done in one take on that street set. Great combo of music and visuals and singing and costumes. I love the show in general but when they were able to go beyond "the sand box" of their writing and acting for a little while it was basically a guarantee of a great time. I just learned this song was recorded by the great Bonnie Raitt. Had no idea.

@byamrcn2 жыл бұрын
Apparently the network forced the 3-D gimmick on the producers, so they decided they'd make the sequences so weird that nobody would bother them for it again. And yeah it was $1.5 million on the production, and they spend $10 million promoting it with the 3-D glasses.

Why is this so musically competent?! Who wrote this song??

Ok, ha, just answering my own question here in case anyone else is curious cause I just looked into it; and the answer is WILD. This is from a musical Randy Newman wrote in 1995; and it was a modern interpretation of Faust and the cast was unreal Mephistopheles: Randy Newman Lord: James Taylor Henry Faust: Don Henley Angel Rick: Elton John Margaret: Linda Ronstadt Martha: Bonnie Raitt Album is called FAUST and it’s in all the music streaming platforms. ENJOY.

This was one heck of a set piece, like a proper stage production. They certainly put a lot of work into this show. I was in 3 productions at high school which we rehearsed and developed to a pretty high standard. I always remember that feeling of being in a close nit group and creating something cool, mingling with the audience after making something special. I'd imagine professional actors get the same feeling when putting on broadway or any shows and musicians with concerts. I wonder if it's the same when they make something like this for tv.

This was written for a musical originally, an irreverent update of Faust. It was the song of the show's bad girl, who manages to break the heart of the devil himself. Bonnie Raitt sang the part on the all-star album. (Linda Ronstadt was the good girl.)
