Autotune is a sound manipulation effect among all others that are being used constantly by musicians but without any criticism, like distortion, reverb, delay etc. The misconception that autotune is a solution to problematic singing and intonation issues keeps opinions like the ones you mention relevant. Of course such ideas are completely outdated, since there are great singers that choose to occasionally use autotune solely for aesthetic purposes. It is a tool that is only used to achieve a certain aesthetic result in specific times, and like all musical effects it cannot be inherently good or bad. It’s just a tool and context defines it. Like any technological innovation and its integration to music making, there are always going to be people who chose to stay in the past and refuse to accept that sound is ever-changing and involving. Instead of being hesitant and hostile towards change, it’s really important to keep an open mind and ears regarding daring young people who are experimenting with sound and are trying to live in the present and not in the past. Taste is subjective, technology is advancing, sound is ever-changing, change is inevitable and absolute judgment is harmful.
