Sometimes this technique doesnt work if some higher order equations are formed Many times by normal method it gets easier to get factors

Good question: and the answer unfortunately is no. For the rest one can use row reduction or cofactors

It does work for 2x2, |a b; c d| is a*d-b*c, the product of the main diagonal minus the product of the inverse diagonal. But, as OP said, for 4x4 and greater you are better off with matrix reduction.
