This is my finished product for the Instagram Builders Challenge, I decided to play with the drawer slides and use dowels instead of traditional hardware or square wood. I was surprised with how easy it was to do!

So an idea for the depthing would be to cut a blind key way down the center of the dowels. Then you could insert a dowel through the drawer into that slot and it would catch the travel to keep the drawer contained and form a rear stop.

Very nice, I love the dowel concept for the drawer slides. If I may give you a small tip for future reference: Construct your drawer boxes so that the sides extend about 2 inches past the back of the drawer - The extended sides then can be sized to act as stops to prevent the drawer from going too far in to the carcase, and the added benefit is that the full interior of the drawer can be seen and used without pulling the whole drawer out of the frame. Also, rubbing a candle along the drawer rails and grooves ensures a super smooth drawer action.

@MintStiles
@MintStiles 5 жыл бұрын
Pocket holes are very strong and effective, that’s why people use them. In fact, they are MUCH stronger than going directly into the end-grain. You can see some very large commercial structures being secured with 1.5” thick bolts using the same principle as pocket holes. For applications here, the screw-into-end-grain joint is plenty strong, but pocket hole will technically be a stronger joint. I think a good doweling system is probably the best way to go, but pocket hole is a close second for me. M&T or dovetails are only moderately stronger but take much more time to do. Unless you are going for “that look”, you are better off with pocket holes.

@DarkMoonDroid

Little dowels on the back, top edge that are not glued in will secure it and be easily removed for cleaning. Same with the back. Little dowls to stop it from going all the way back, but removable so you can push the drawers out of the back to pull the other dowels out. Making extras and making them all the same size will insure it won't get messed up if you lose a few.

NOPE !!! NOT OCD... Its called being a Perfectionist... All professionals and Artist must ACHEIVE this level... Setting grain directions to match is proper procedure... Those who don't consider this step make lousy products... 45 years in Custom Wood Work... Quality Is Key To A Successful Business... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Did you know your measuring tape can tell you when it's time to retire ? Stretch your tape out across the floor to 90 inches ( 80" for men )... If each inch represents a year of your life, how many inches of life do you have left for enjoyment? Or will you work your life away, inch by inch... The visual perspective of a life span, via a measuring tape, will freak you out... Note: Full retirement Sucks.. Unless your doing something exciting... Like sailing the globe for instance...

Very creative design with the dowel slide! I don't think I've seen that used anywhere else. Very nice video -- well done!

I think you did a great job. 👍😁 Plus you are a good problem solver and you solved 1 for me. Some people (men) think that women can't do stuff like you just did, but read Proverbs 31:10- 30 and get praise for your self. You fit the scriptures sited.

Once upon a time, even over here, beautiful women were expected to be very good at the sort of thing you do. My mum listened to the motorbike my mate turned up in and gave it 30 miles. It managed 40. She could shoot a .303 (a .308 to you) at 500 yd and hit five bulls. She is 95, I am 61. So no young bride. Choosy. I would not be lost in admiration for you, even though you inspire me, I would just assume you could do those things. My mother made my clothes, perfectly, on her treadle-powered sewing machine. Once she put a needle through her finger, right through the bone, while repairing it. In the toolbox that came with the machine, a pair of pliers, which she used to remove the needle. Reclamp it, and continue to sew. Having, in the meantime, discovered and repaired the fault. Elastoplast preventing staining of the piece with blood.

Hi Tamar, great idea and execution. I'll admit, you're a more skilled and fancier woodworker than I am! Given this 4 years ago, could you tell me the name of the video where you show the depth stops for the drawers please? TX

IMHO, if you're going to go through the trouble of using dowels for drawer slides, the dowel plugs are mandatory, which ties the piece together nicely.

I really appreciate your talent & use many of the same techniques as you but please use some sound attenuation. Your vid's will be easier to comprehend. I have the same situation by running a home shop that is not allowed where I live. Just a thought!😊👍

It could be suggested that wax applied to the dowels and the grooves they mate with to prevent binding and reduce friction. Women should be allowed to be carpenters. So women can learn how to saw though their fingers like men do. I definitely give that a "half a thumb's up" for equality.

Aside from the draws vs drawers issue my comment is those are the biggest 1/2" dowels I have ever seam. Actual if you'd used 1/2" dowels it wouldn't work. Better to use the 1" dowel as it is less likely to let the draw fall off track.

I might have considered slightly shorter drawers inside their side panels so that you're less inclined to pull them out their full length. Or better still, use some of that innate ingenuity of yours to create "extending" tubular/dowel slides.

Great job young lady. Since the glues and epoxies today are so strong there are many many people that we see that are using no dowels or biscuits anymore. For the long term strength of your project you made a wonderful decision. The quality of your work speaks for itself. Great job.
