Conductors all have FMCP (Freely Moving Charged Particles).
Ionic compounds are almost always solid at room temperature since ionic bonds are strong. So ionic solids do not conduct (the particles cannot freely move).
BUT
Melting or dissolving the ionic compound will free up the ions and allow them to conduct.
Dr Atkinson sealed the portal he created by stuffing it with the new IB data booklets that I had to throw away cos they we full of mistakes.
eg 1st I.E. hydrogen, wrong units for EM spectrum, confusing oxidation state with number, inconsistent transition metal charges etc.

This is clearing up some of the route learned concept in igcse, Now that I’m in Ib I’m glad to find a channel like this After reading a chapter through book and viewing this channel, it clears everything up Thankyou so much, a very cool approach to learning hats off

Just wanted to tell you, Mr Thornley, that if you press "R" on the keyboard while aiming at an object it will be released. This way you can make those solid ionic compounds into fmcp even faster

thankyou that helped - it would have been amazing if i could tell all the words you are saying. You aren't muffling but - you talk fast and slow - with quick gaps - long gaps! nothing crazy but as someone who is half deaf - that becomes a problem. Subtitles would be super super ! youtube attempts subtitles but they really are crazy. thanks

Once the ions attach to the electrodes electrons are gaied by the particles on cathode. After this particles on both the electrodes become neutral. So do they fall of the electrodes. If they do how they still conduct electricity.
@jaredhu5960
@jaredhu5960 5 жыл бұрын
I think they fall off and become solids because they became neutral. I did an experiment with salt solution connected to a circuit, and once I turned on the power the solution started fussing. Overtime I see the solution gets cloudy and a decrease in ammeter reading. A ionic solution gradually loses its conductivity overtime because it loses ions.

But why are they attracted to the positive or negative electrode? Arent the ions happy that they have reached the electron configuration of a nobel gas?
@ibchemvids
@ibchemvids 7 жыл бұрын
They may be stable but they are charged - so will be attracted to the oppositely charge electrode via electrostatic attraction. When the ions get there the electrostatic attraction will rip off (or add) electrons. This process requires energy (from the power source) since the ions are "happy". This extra energy makes them unstable(r) again. (higher energy means less stable)
