This video will explore pictorial representations of the “game of canes”, or mock equestrian battles, that were popular in Spain and Italy in the Early Modern Period. In those festivities, noble Christians participated dressed as “moors”. Thus, these festivities raise questions around iconography, identity, alterity and mechanism of disguise.
Este video analizará diversas representaciones pictóricas del “juego de cañas”, una batalla ecuestre fingida que fue muy popular en España e Italia durante la Edad Moderna. En estas fiestas, cristianos nobles participaban vestidos “a la morisca”. Así, estas fiestas nos permiten explorar cuestiones en relación con la iconografía, con la identidad, la alteridad y los mecanismos del disfraz.
