Truck House Life

Күн бұрын

In episode 152 of Truck House Life, I'll attempt to drive the truck camper up to the infamous 4x4 road to Engineer Pass on the Alpine Loop trail in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. This road is made for Jeeps, not hard-side truck campers. A night of truck camping turned into a struggle for oxygen. Here we go...

former wilderness EMT here. You developed altitude sickness likely because you didn't acclimatize and you were running up and down to do your filming and over exerted yourself. Smart move to come down in the night like that because it can actually turn into something more serious - high-altitude cerebral edema (HACE), and high-altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE).

I recently visited some friends in Arizona who live at roughly 6000 feet where I live at about 500 feet. I can't even begin to say how much that elevation kicked my butt. Took me out for 3 days.

I'm a long-time old school hunter from British Columbia, Canada and have driven over just about every mountain pass in the province with my brother and our hunting buddies. The biggest vehicle we ever took over the rough stuff were lifted Jimmy's or Broncos (full size) with our tents and supplies in custom made high ground clearance trailers. You did good with your heavily laden long wheel base truck....really good. After setting up a base camp we'd hike up into the high country where there was no road access to go after Mountain Sheep and Mule Deer, living out of our backpacks for 2 to 3 days. Highest elevation I ever camped at was 13,500 according to my altimeter which I thought was pretty good for someone who lived near the ocean.

I went camping and sightseeing in Colorado a few years back. Very beautiful place. I went during the month of June. So right after the spring thaw. I hit the indepence pass, which base elevation is 10,000ft. Took that all the way to Aspen. Then I headed up to Glenwood Pine. It was all very amazing. After about 3 days I developed a headache that I couldn't get rid of. After 5 days, the headache turned into nausea and lightheadedness. So, day 6 I had to drop elevation because I felt so out of it. It was affecting my vision. So I headed toward Denver and put the pedal down. From there I went straight south back down to the foothills and started to feel much better. Only when I dropped below 3,000ft did I feel normal again. That altitude sickness is something pretty gnarly bro.

Hey Tim, you knocked this one out of the ballpark. WOW! No way I would have done that road, I hate heights. That road reminds me of the Polychrome Pass and Eielson Pass in Denali National Park. I highly highly recommend next time you are in Colorado you go thru fort Collins and up the louder river you'll pass famous Mishawaka theater and you could go-to red feather but my favorite place is Long draw reservoir it's about 50 miles up the louder canyon you'll pass chambers lake on the right and then you'll see a sign long draw road you'll turn left there onto a dirt road then you'll drive up a ways and you'll see beautiful trap lake on the right keep going the road will split Peterson lakes on the left side go right too keep going too longdraw reservoir you'll pass a old cabin and a small campground on left keep going and then you'll see why I love it so much!! I've taken my son there every year since his mom was pregnant with him and it's become our family tradition Togo there every year at least once there's allot of moose and cut throat trout keep driving all the way to the inlet there's a tents only camp ground but there's also a bunch of dispersed camping spots that you could just pull over into you will love it my friend frim alsaks says its the olace in colorado that makes him feel like hes in alaska!!!!
