I am an occasional intravenous drug user and years ago I would use a vein on the front of the neck about 1 cm below the surface, and I stopped because it occurred to me that it was probably the anterior jugular vein i was injecting in, and if I accidentally inadvertently hit the artery on the neck instead and pushed the drugs in, I expect that would result in a massive stroke as the drug would travel upwards into the brain rather than down to the heart like with a vein.
