For anyone considering the 100mm, I got a 90mm macro lens and found that while it's great for close ups, it requires a lot of working distance to fit even a plate in the frame - which I often don't have as I'm not shooting in a studio! You can see this @2:43. If you're a casual shooter like me you'd probably be better off with a 50mm or zoom lens.

When I used to shoot with Canon I love the 100mm f/2.8L Marco the most.
@darthslash3 жыл бұрын
The Tamron 35-150mm f/2.8-4 actually works pretty well. It's marketed as a portrait lens but it's also fantastic for food photography because of the close minimum focusing distance. But it autofocuses relatively slowly though it 's not issue with stationary subjects

For food photography, I normally use the following on a full-frame camera: 55mm f/3.5 macro 105mm f/2.8 macro 28mm f/4 perspective control I watched this video because I could not imagine what other lens I could add to my food photography lens kit. Based on your video, I will consider adding the following to my food photography lens kit. 28-70mm f/2.8 24mm f/2 21mm f/1.4

I don’t understand why you need a 24mm prime when you have a 24-70 zoom. Why is 24 @ 1.4 so much better than 24 @ 2.8 for vlogging or top down video? Neither one needs super shallow depth of focus.

Hi there. Tell me the difference between using a 35mm lens vs. a 50mm in food photography?
@skylerburtphotos4 жыл бұрын
I shoot full frame so for me a 35mm would be a wide overhead shot, however the 50mm could be used both in front of the food as well as a tighter overhead shot

Hello my friend, Great and informative video, please I would really appreciate it if you read my comment and reply. I do cooking videos and I would like to find Sony camera lens that is able to take 4k image to a cooking pan from about a meter away to avoid the heat and the splashing oil but at the same time to be able to zoom very close to get a micro image to the ingredients. I would really appreciate your help.

Not sure if you you would know this, but I have a question. I'm shooting on a M4/3 Panasonic and I have a 12-60mm f2.8-4 lens which can shoot as close as 20cm even when zoomed to 60mm. For purposes of food photography, what would be the advantage of still getting a 45mm Macro lens if I can already get pretty close with the 12-60mm zoom?
@skylerburtphotos4 жыл бұрын
It depends on the specs of the 45mm off the top the 45mm won’t be a variable aperture lens. macros tend to have more compression and a single plane of focus, but see if the 45mm is a true 1:1

Hi ! I'm taking your class. and I have a question. I have 6d mkii and 50mm 1.2f lens. I want to buy a 100mm macro but I need a one for traveling and video too. so 24-70mm vs 24-105mm they are on the option. If 24-105mm has considerably bad sharpness compare to 24-70mm, I will buy 24-70mm. Which one is better for this situation?

Great video man really enjoying your channel. Quick thing lenses don’t have compression. A 12mm will have the same compression as an 800mm. Compression is perspective and only depends on how close or far you are from your subject.
@skylerburtphotos6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! "exaggerates the effects of" vs "has" hmmm.... Not sure I want to jump down this rabbit hole ;)
@Sondercreative6 жыл бұрын
We Eat Together it doesn’t that’s the thing compression has absolutely nothing at all to do with the lens or focal length. It can’t exaggerate anything because it only depends on your distance.

Nice video, but the ultimate food lens is the AF Nikkor 70-180/f4.5-5.6D Micro (macro).
@skylerburtphotos6 жыл бұрын
I don't use Nikon very often, why would you pick that lens over say the prime 105mm macro? I'm sure there are a lot of Nikon shooters here, so any Nikon specific info would be helpful, thanks!
@DannerPlace6 жыл бұрын
Like pretty much all macro lenses, it's brilliantly sharp. It has two important advantages, the longer available reach of 180mm (compression and background isolation), and the ability to zoom to crop for composition. I shoot food in the studio, with a heavy (older) tripod, and once I get an angle set, it's very convenient and flexible to adjust the framing with the zoom, as opposed to moving and adjusting the tripod (someday I want a camera stand, but $$$). Also, where tighter crops of a given scene are desired, just zoom in. This disadvantage is the slower max aperture, but I shoot with strobes, and really never have a problem getting a shallow depth of field. My 2¢ Also, as you do, I like 50mm for flat lays. Used to use the 105/2.8 Nikon macro, but not so much once I got the 70-180. YMMV :-)
@skylerburtphotos6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info man! Yeah if you have an extra kidney lying around go for the camera stand ;)
@hassansalehipour48716 жыл бұрын
If you have 24-70 then why would you have a prime 24mm??
@skylerburtphotos6 жыл бұрын
good question, first I'm not recommending anyone buying all four of these lenses unless they want to. Secondly, the 24mm prime is a f1.4 lens which offers a few more stops then the 24-70 so if your shooting video or time-lapses that's really helpful. Also because I really recommend the 24mm prime lens as a video lens, it is much lighter then the 24-70 and it has a closer minimum focal distance.
@Jasmine_Sangma6 жыл бұрын
The 24-70mm lens has the maximum f-stop at 2.8. However, the 24mm prime lens he is showing here has a maximum f-stop at 1.4. Hence, there is a difference.

The average person will watch a video for 7 seconds before clicking off if they are not getting the info they are looking for and you guys keep putting up these 60 to 90 second forced commercials. Hence the reason youtube lets you click skip after 5 seconds. They know what you don't know my friend. It took you 2 minutes and 3 seconds to before you got to the point. Even television commercials are not 123 seconds and that is a program you are already invested in. There is no initial investment in your video...just a straight 2 minute introduction and commercial. Just saying.
