Loved your blueprint, Kerry. Hard to do such a sequential project like your stackable box the first time without one (or 2d or 3d if it has been a while)! I think the grain pattern showed up nice on your cross grain boxes. I prefer end grain boxes for keeping a fit. What a wonderful community of international woodturners we have.

Great to see some other variations on one of our 4-Ways projects - and a different approach, one I hadn't considered. I think the top of your stack is crying out for a domed lid or finial... try that on the next one.

Thank you for your comment, Richard; it really means a lot coming from you. Funny enough, I actually made a finial for the prototype and put it to a vote, but it got overwhelmingly voted out. I was thinking the same as you, though. Maybe the shape I made just wasn’t quite right. Thanks again for your support. Cheers, Kez

I don’t mind our winters, but they’re not really winters compared to yours, it doesn’t get below zero here.😏 It’s been so hot lately, close to, if not 40 degrees most days in the workshop, even with all the doors open. The worst part is the humidity; it’s that tropical kind, so once you start sweating, you stay wet for ages. The air feels super thick, hahaha. 🌴 But honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way!🤝 Cheers, mate, Kezza

Nice looking box tower, Kez. The shape is nice as well as interesting. You did a great job turning those boxes and explaining your process. Here's a thought. If you make a mortice (inset) on the bottom box for a smaller chuck, it gives you a way to hold that box on a small chuck and stack the other boxes with a jam-plate on your tailstock. Then, when you are finished, use a "logo coin" to fill the mortice at the end. I made a set of 3 straight-sided boxes that all stack in any with a lid that fits which ever box is on the top. These were seasoning boxes (salt, pepper and another spice) for my daughter. I inset a milliput ring around the side of each box (one black, one white and one orange) so you would know what was inside before you opened the box. The music was a nice touch. Good selection and not too loud. Well Done!
@KerryCorney4 күн бұрын
Thank you so much for the great feedback; I really appreciate your comments. The main reason I like using tenons in the bottoms of my pieces is that they’re stronger, but I’ve seen those logo coins before, and they’re pretty cool. The box you made sounds amazing. That’s one of the best parts of this craft; being able to create heirloom items that stay in the family forever. Thanks again for your support, mate. Cheers, Kez

I’m really impressed with this project Kerry. I’m currently working on my second box form and getting the correct fit for the lid has been quite difficult for me. The cedar you used is gorgeous! I also like that you planned out the project beforehand. I NEVER do that 😂😂. Just slap a piece of wood on the lathe and see what happens. Lots of lessons for me in this video. Also enjoy the format and jazz music in the background. Keep up the good work 👏🏼👏🏼

For boring to a desired depth, I place a snug rubber O-ring on the drillbit at the desired position back from the tip. I also use O-rings on the shank of router bits to keep them from dropping too far into the router's collet.

Great project. When you are hollowing out the "bowl" of the boxes were you leveraging the gouge against the rim as you were getting to the bottom? It looked like you were but the angle was a little tough to tell for sure. Seems like that would be a good way to steady the tool into the bottom. I always love the humor in your videos. the look into the camera after another one of the boxes slipped out of your had as you were parting off really got me. Great stuff.
@KerryCorney2 күн бұрын
Thanks so much for leaving a comment and feedback, Jordan. 🤝 The bevel is always rubbing when cutting down the wall, but when the rim gets in the way, I climb up from the base and then come back toward the base/centre. I avoid letting the tool shaft rub on the rim because the material can crack. I always leave my mistakes in for that exact reason. It not only shows my faults but also lets me have a laugh at myself, haha. I think too many people edit them out, which takes away that sense of realness. Cheers, mate, Kezza
