It’s a command, if I told you, “Tell me what your name is” then you wouldn’t not tell me just because I didn’t form like a question. Riddles don’t have to be questions, in fact, commands can just as easily require an answer as questions. So, in short, there is no grammatical error.

earl wink I'm not saying there's a grammatical error necessarily, I'm saying they're not asking us anything. "Tell me..." is a command, "What is the mother's name" is just a statement. They're basically just telling us the name of the mother. So we go, "Um... ok, that's great, but so what? Now what? What are we supposed to do, whats the question." They're not directly asking us to find out the mothers name, they're just telling us the name and not telling us to do anything. And if they did mean to ask us what the mother's name is, then it is incorrect grammar. So I don't know what tf you're talking about and what crazy school you went to. Sorry.

earl wink Well, "Tell me what your name is." has the verb at the end. That would be equivalent to "Tell what the mother's name is.", which changes the sentence. More so, the interrogative word "what" causes the is to be after and makes the sentence a question. So, the original "statememt" has to be incorrect. Otherwise, any other grammatically correct configuration would defeat and contradict the whole purpose of the riddle. [I don't mean to be rude or anything. This seemed like it had to be said. English is confusing sometimes though.]

I find these interesting, however it is pointless to try to extract the value of one's intelligence from such. Each of these requires more prior experience than it does novel problem-solving. The issue here is that these questions revolve around very specific INSIDE details. Let me put this into analogy. You have a deadbolt lock on a door, locked. Person 1 attempts the lock first, tries a paper clip, tries freezing, tries a credit card, tried other tools but fails. Person 2 was informed there is a spare key, goes and lifts a rock, grabs the key and opens the door. By your reasoning, person 2 must be smarter because they were able to solve the issue. Another analogy? You have a item that needs to be purchased for $100. Person 1 only was only given $10. Person 2 was given $100. Who would be able to complete the task? Maybe a different one. A 200 kilo block needs to be moved. Person 1 was only told to move it. Person 2 was given a Dolly. Who is actually going to succeed in moving it? I love riddles and quizes, but you present it as if someone who was not privy to the same tool sets to solve these must be inferior intellectually. Really, the things some of you people stoop to make yourselves "better" than someone else, jeez.

Sally Sparrow (from Dr. Who? "Blink" is one of my favorite episodes) It's true. You are correct. There are 4 riddles. 3 of these riddles are presented as questions, but the last riddle is not. He doesn't ask a question, instead he tells you to "Say the mother's name." So if you don't say anything, or if you say the wrong thing, then you fail to meet the requirements of the fourth riddle...and you lose. Sorry. I got it wrong too, but who cares. If you didn't understand the decoding method, there would be no way to solve the problem, therefore I declare the first 'riddle' not a riddle at all. Besides, you would not say 'Congratulations' on someone's birthday, you would say it for completing college, son getting married, or accomplishing some sort of achievement. There is no achievement during a birthday. Therefor, you would not say 'Congratulations'. The riddle cheats. You could only accidentally recognize the pattern.

Yeah. It was clear by the date and clue the answer was "Happy Birthday", but the method didn't feel like a fair puzzle to figure out. It was convoluted and the real answer didn't actually make sense. Another thing that bothered me was that LIX isn't even a math thing. The mother was a mathematician, so I totally got hung up on 59 being a prime number. I feel cheated! heheh To be fair, I should have gotten the "What is the mother's name." I didn't, though.

They are just to difficult. For the first one there are like a billion possibilities to encode something. Just need to be lucky to test the right method in the mind. 2nd is actually possible. I somehow noticed it includes all letters of carpet and then got it. But seems the only riddle people solved. 3rd is weird. I assumed Iron is Fe and the only name I thought of was Felix. I didn't get how the 59 should translate to letters tho. I doubt 10% of people know L is 50 in Roman numbers. Most know only I, V, X maybe M. 4 is possible because every riddle was read but this one. The pronunciation would destroy the riddle. I didn't got it tho.
