I started watching your videos 4 years ago when you did your trip from LA to Hawaii (like most subscribers, I imagine), and I've always loved that it sorta feels like we're a fly on the wall - or a "Henrietta" - getting to peak at what your life is like solo sailing. No gimmicks. No script. Your content is genuine and pure, which is why i haven't missed an upload, even though i don't know how to sail (yet) And no matter the length or the type of content you upload, so many of us are always thankful when you do find time to post. So please don't change, or feel like you need to change. We love your videos because of your charisma and your very unique storytelling ability ❤️

And better quality is so subjective, I'd hate to see him do things he doesn't want to do just get footage. I've learnt more about sailing and the difficulties with customs and marinas from Sam than every other sailing channel I watch combined.

Back in the history the Athenians invaded Sicily (around Syracuse which resisted them) they were eventually defeated and forced to sail back to Athens along the route you took (but imagine doing it in a galley with oars and sqaure sails! Everywhere you sail now has lot sof ancient history :-)! Honestly your videos are great amazing considering that you're doing them whilst sailign single handed - all the channels that produce "better quality" videos put lots of time and effort into editing them to get them there - I love your blogg style videos - it feels much more raw and that we're just along with you, it's your style and great and I really enjoy watchign them! Good Luck Sam.

Anyhow, Sam your video's are plenty good enough for my viewing. I view on a 1280x1024, 19" monitor that works just fine off of my bigass computer running a linux client machine. Audio is also very good as well so whatever you're doing just keep doing it. I love your earthy, everyday, no fancy content. Years ago I crewed for a coupla years on a double ender steel ketch (center cockpit), a 40 footer with a full keel like your Bayfield 29 there. It was a little quicker due to the longer waterline and lotsa sail but not very much as we sported some 150 mile days here and there. This was in the days of sextants, Sam. I took the captain's word on it regarding where we were at the nooner check in time. This boat went around the horn East to West but I wasn't on it at the time. Yeah imagine navigating that passage with nothing but a sextant! Not only that the captain stated he remained well offshore just north of the maximum iceberg range! This is getting close to an area where you gotta be concerned about air temp due to icing the boat.

Sam, I would love to see a sailboat buyer's guide for aspiring sailors of modest means. I think many people just getting into it -- or thinking about getting into it -- have always assumed that sailing was for the very well-heeled, but you seem to be a shining counterexample. What years/makes/models should noobs look for? What is the ideal condition/price range for a first boat? What gear is absolutely essential? How do you overwinter on a budget? Like sports cars, motorcycles and other fun things, ordinary people need to be convinced that they've crossed an indefinite practicality threshold before something like this starts to feel possible. Love the content!

Getting completely burned obviously isn't the solution. Best of luck!💨

Sam, it's possible those flashing lights on the boats in the anchorage are actually solar lights that are just left mounted outside all the time. Often these portable lights have a three way switch; off, on and flashing. The ON position usually has two or three different light intensity levels to choose from. They have a photo-electric cell that prevents them from coming on during light hours. I used one all summer in a boatyard where I'm restoring a Bayfield and it lit up the cockpit every night automatically.

I really enjoy all your videos, but you're Hobbie sailing brings back fun times. My Hobbie 16 w/jib was on a nice sized boomerang shaped lake with an island at the joint. The shape allowed lots of wind directions and points of sail. When the wind didn’t present enough craziness, my cousin & I used to look for the twin engine sea plane that practiced there. The closest I got to "Sam Holms Sailing" was when we'd pass behind him as he full throtled for take off! It would suck water right off the lake, when that hit the sails, up and off we'd go, till we ran out of the blast! My Hobbie mentor, crazy Andre, only went out when storms were running others off the lake. Once he/we burried both hulls enough for water to wash right over the tramp! He was fearless! He was also stone deaf, which allowed me to beat him once in a "race" (me in an O'Day 20 he in a 19'er). He couldn't hear my motor so he just kept trying to figure out how I was blowing past him. I never did fess up and he's gone now (except for great memories, brought back by guys like you!). Thanks!
