I am an old man now. Your video reminded me of when I was young. I had a buddy in HS, David Murphy. We liked to go backpacking. We went many places in California. Joshua Tree, Idlewild, Mt. Whitney. Dinners were very relaxing. The day was done, we sat, talked, and enjoyed our food. Hot coco, or coffee, or tea was a treat to enjoy. Look at the stars, look at our map, and time to sleep. I also went car camping with my brother. Big Sur, Mammoth. We took my truck and had everything to be comfortable. Lots of good food, steaks, eggs, potatoes, and beers too. I camped in a tent in the snow for 2 days once, it was a fun trip. I never made an igloo though. Good job!

You did an amazing job building an igloo by yourself. That is no easy task! You were right to build a platform for your bed as cold air sinks. If you build a cold trap in the middle of the floor it will take the coldest air down there with it! Just dig the snow out to ground level to trap that cold air below your bed level even further. That is an amazing job for a first effort. I have yet to manage to build the roof of an igloo by myself. Congratulations and greetings from Canada!

Actually, as the igloo ages, it gets stronger, due to snow turning into ice and then when It snows, that snow melts from the heat inside and turns to ice which thickens the igloo. ......At least until the temperatures warm up.

Just the thought of having to think about a good view or the right angle, setting up camera before doing something, then going back to stop it and put it away and go on with the rest of your work... even without considering the editing (which at least he can do later in the comfort and warmth of his home I assume and probably without a near deadline), is still a big nightmare to me. Good job. If you plan on doing another one I suggest that you glaze it at the end. You poke a small hole at 45 degrees from top and light a small fire inside with the door closed and it will melt the walls slightly. Put out the fire and let it cool. The walls will freeze up sealing and strengthening the igloo. 3 sealfat candles for about 20 mins should do it.

You have remarkable skills for building and surviving in an Igloo for 4 days. In my opinion the Igloo is beautiful. I am surprised you didn't carpet the floor with dead branches to isolate your sleeping bag from the cold snow. Great job.

In norway, up north, it is a igloo building, every winter. It gets treated with water , slowly, so the building are partly of ice. And it is a big, really big building, it is used as a bar , with a whole bar in it of course,also made of ice . (Think about it "on the rocks" gets easy 🤪), And ,to top it off, one can hire a room to stay the night, in this "ice castle ". And, you wont be cold ! It is full of reindeer fur, and the lights makes it look so very magic . This snow building (a speciality from "samer" ,and inuits ), is a fantastic attraction every vinter. And, to top it off, you can just go outside, look up, and se the miracle of the northern lights. I dont think anything can beat the northern lights. I bet this video maker, already know how to make a igloo. Clearly he know the tecnic behind it . The ceiling/roof is the hardest to get right. And one have to do ot right, or one can get the whole thing in the head while making coffe... It is a very old tecnic, but works just as it did when people actually lived in these buildings ,in the winter.

Great job! Both in the forest and afterwards at home. Found this when searching for 'building a home of snow' on a snowy Saturday. Was trying to do the same in a nearby park some years ago with the kids. A very exciting process. The only difference is that the snow was wet and the blocks were easy to form and stick to each other. In your case the snow is dry and delicate which makes it more difficult. I was not able to form the roof though. Will try your technic this winter. Thank you! And of course the comments, enjoyed them!
@AsbjornOlsenBergBushcraft3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! It is not difficult to make from dry snow. You need to support the brick on three points. Most importantly, you need snow well compressed by the wind. Otherwise, the bricks will crumble. I will also try to repeat this structure this winter. I want to try to heat it with a stove from the inside.
