Hi Shaina, great job. I have a question Minute 3.48 "so if your coworker is sad because their dog died" Why you used ""their dog" Why not? "his dog" because you are talking in singular. Thank you in advance.
@EspressoEnglishNet
@EspressoEnglishNet 7 жыл бұрын
Good question! Technically it should be "his/her dog died" - but that's awkward to say, so in everyday English we often use "they" and "their" for an individual person when we don't specify if it's a man or woman. Even though it's "technically" incorrect since it mixes singular and plural, it's extremely common.

Glad you enjoyed it! Hmm, the sentence doesn't sound very natural to me. By "redundancies," do you mean people losing their jobs, or something else?

so basically "get over" and its variations mean to get rid of something/someone that disturbs you.
@EspressoEnglishNet
@EspressoEnglishNet 7 жыл бұрын
Exactly - although "I can't get over" can be used for things that are not disturbing, such as, "I can't get over how delicious that cake was!"

He got over his cough before his exams, which allowed him to concentrate properly. 'Get over it, otherwise you might flunk again if you keep thinking about the past and not learning from it ! ' mother said to her daughter, when she kept sulking over her low grades for a month. I can't get over the fact that I just won a lottery. I just got the task of removing weeds from my garden over with before the rain and felt so happy. Is the construction of the sentence right? Or is it too long of a sentence?

4:45 Ballet - bæleɪ what the hell? when will they bring order in the language?
@EspressoEnglishNet
@EspressoEnglishNet 7 жыл бұрын
There have been attempts to standardize English spelling and pronunciation before, but they have never worked :-( "ballet" is a word that came from French, which is why there is a silent "T" at the end. Same with "buffet" and "filet"
