Yeah, as a 73 year old I got it right pretty much in my head. I try to work problems in my head or by writing them out if too complex rather than use a calculator. Solved in my head at the thumbnail, my answer is c) 1/16. First, we evaluate both the numerator and the denominator as though they had explicit parentheses. 4/8 = 1 / 2. 2 * 4 = 8. Then, calculate the fraction as a whole, 1/2 / 8 = 1/16.

Admittedly, I did get the answer wrong the first time (when I was just looking at the thumbnail) because my brain interpreted 4/8 the wrong way, which I assume is why most people get this wrong. I originally thought 4/8=2. But then I corrected myself, getting 4/8=0.5. And then 2*4=8. That's 0.5/8, or 1/16. So the answer is C. I also don't know how to put it into a calculator to get a wrong answer. [EDIT] Okay, I see how people would get it wrong. They would forget the use of parentheses.

I hate it when people present these questions as an order of operations question. The right way to think about this problem is that 4 divided by eight equals 4 times 1/8. Once everything is translared into multiplication then the problem is simple: since everything is multiplication the order doesn't actually matter as long as you multiply the fractions correctly.

1/16th right? Long horizontal fraction bar means implied parentheses around the numerator and also around the denominator. (1/2) / (8) = 1/16th

What I did was real simple : First I solved for 4 ➗8 🟰.5 Second : multiplied 2*4 🟰 8 Third: I multiplied both the denominator and numerator by 2 and I got 1/16

4 div by 8 is half......or 1/2.....1/2 div by the denominator of 2x4 = 8 so now the solution is 1/2 div by 8 = 1/16....very easy isn't it....IT IS NOT 1/2 OF.......... BUT 1/2 DIVIDED..... BY 8...SO ITS OBVIOUS THE ANSWER IS ,,,1/16

Ooh, ooh, I got this without algebra - the problem is a fraction over a fraction - 4/8 over 8/1. Simplify that by multiplying the top denominator by the bottom numerator, leaving a one in the bottom numerator's position - 4/64 over 1/1, or just 4 over 64. 1/16! If the problem were, say, 5/8 over 16/2, then leap-frog the bottom denominator to the top numerator by multiplying, leaving a one in the bottom denominator - that gets you to 10/8 over 16/1. Multiply the top denominator by the bottom numerator for 10/128 over 1/1, or just 10/128, which is 5/64. In other words, (a/b)/(c/d) equals ad/bc. Dividing the denominator as the same effect as multiplying the numerator. Dividing the numerator is the same as multiplying the denominator. It's not algebra, it's just visual leap-frog up from the bottom. No need to question anything other than to note the wise logician never divides by zero.
