I just carry my backpack and find it is no problem. I generally carry the route guidebook in my pack (I like to jot down notes in them at the end of the night to help me remember events on that portion) and will also use phone apps found on the App Store (such as Buen Camino).

I hate hiking poles. They cause many people to have injuries. Mostly I see people carrying them as I walk passed them.
