The soukous and another african rhythms are listened in the Colombian caribean coast, the music arrived in the 60's-80's. Here was born a rhythm from these african rhythms, it's called Champeta, it's very similar to soukous. I recommend you hear some champetas. I was in Soccer City Stadium on the day after this concert to see the World Cup Final between Holland and Spain and I would have gladly exchanged my ticket to have witnessed this concert. Syran Mbenza is one of my all time favourite guitarists and I would have loved to have seen him play with African All Stars, Quatre Etoiles, Kass Kass or Kekele. Unfortunately he has never visited South Africa to my knowledge and although I have seen Papa Wemba, Kanda Bongo Man and Papa Noel in Johannesburg and even the great Franco and OK Jazz in Harare in the 1980s , I would exchange any one of those experiences to see this concert. I believe he lives in Paris now and doesn't play much anymore. If anybody hears of a concert featuring Syran Mbenza, please let me know - it would be worth the trip wherever in the world.
