Doesn't explain why he had a cargo hold full of advanced alien weapons but there's 2 possibilities. 1 he's a black market dealer and he was trying to make a buck when he crashed. 2 he's a mark for higher and his employer paid him to get the weapons, maybe he was lucky enough to work for someone fighting for a good cause maybe trying to defend their world and those weapons were a important part of that. Either way he shouldn't promise to never leave, he should've promised he'd always come back because that planet is home now that way he could deliver the weapons and stash his luker in the bank and in the event their people become a space fairing race his $$ could earn some interest to get another ship, he takes some of them with him they can all work out in the galaxy to benefit their people.
