Tip for not pressing too hard with a pencil! Hold your pencil more to the back of it instead of close to the tip of the pencil, it makes it so that putting pressure is more difficult

I had the same thought logic, but then I barely use my alcohol markers because I just don't have enough different tones to make these beautiful effects, you know? So I'd say, if you want to buy a few markers to test if you like them, pick a hue and buy a few different tones. That'd be my advice anyways, not that you asked for it lol

I’d recommend looking at your current art and picking apart which colors you use the most for instance maybe your color pallet is bright rainbow or maybe desaturated earthy tones my color pallet is black white red and skin tones usually so I made sure those were my first then after I made sure I liked them and were using them over the years my collection expanded

Howdy! Art dad probably wont see this but i have something that helps with the heavy pencil; my mom had actually taught this to me because shes an artist as well. Instead of holding the pencil like normal, i hold it in between my middle and pointer fingers and use my thumb to brace it and its helped me do lighter sketches. Hold the pencil kinda like you hold chopsticks in a sense? Hopefully that helps :)

Oliver if you want to try pressing down lighter with your pencil try holding it at a slight angle and have your hand farther away from the tip of the pencil.

A tip for pencil pressure is to hold the pencil higher up . It puts the pencil at an angle that way you won’t be able to press as hard.

Oliver, if you ever see this, I have a question: which colors should a beginner artist to alcohol markers buy? Like, should I buy mostly midtones, should I just buy pastels which I can just layer, or...? 😅 I really wanna try alcohol markers but I don't wanna spend a lot of money buying a lot of colors on the get go.

It depends on the art you make o guess: if you wanna get a variety of tones, I'd suggest getting colors with similar codes (like for copics you could get e70, e74, and e77 for example). Colors like that are made to blend nicer together so getting different values is easy. If you want to get a variety of hues I'd suggest focusing on pastels to midtones and avoid anything too dark. Hope this helps!

My first set of alcohol markers was a skin tone set, it had like 6 markers and it worked really well for me. I don’t know what you tend to draw but I figured, tans and browns are usually a save bet😂
