This Shelby Daytona Coupe was leased from Alan Mann Racing by Ford of France, to race as the national “Tri-Colore” entry in the 1965 Nurburgring 1000 km race, for which it was painted a white body finish with blue and red stripes. Well known French drivers André Simon and Jo Schlesser drove this coupe to 3rd in the GT 3 category (behind the GT winning Alan Mann entry driven by Bondurant and Neerpasch), and 12th overall. After the race, this white coupe was returned to Alan Mann Racing and was repainted in the official Guardsman Blue metallic and white stripe of the 1965 Shelby American team. Carroll Shelby himself owned this Daytona before it was sold by RM Auctions for $4.4 million on August 19, 2000
This year marked the 30th anniversary of Modena Motorsport and also the 20 anniversary of the Modena Trackdays.
The trackdays are held every 2 years at either the Nürburgring or Spa-Francorchamps.

the most exquisite? once drove an 1968 L-88 pumped up to 700 HP with 14-1 compression. like a clown being shot out of a cannon. didn't close the deal which was good thing. The great endurance race Driver Robert Grossman owned a dealership up at Nyack NY. Many years ago him and I took a 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB4 out for a half hour sprint with me driving. Easily, the nicest car I've ever driven. I gave him a $500.00 deposit on an $8,000. car. My ex-wife killed the deal. currently own a 1993 RS America Porsche and a 2008 Carrera S, and a ZO6 Vette. my current favorite to drive is a 1997 SS Camaro six speed. love the unpretentious nature of playing the red neck. when Shelby introduced those spectacular cars starting in 63', the sport once dominated by Ferrari, suddenly, became supercharged with excitement. My racing experience was limited in the early to mid seventies to motocross for about five seasons. raced a Maico 400 and finished with 360 GP Husqvarna. all in district #6 in Pennsylvania. More demanding than auto racing if you're a serious competitor.

@dillon LONG - The major contributor are those snaked headers into those wonderful side pipes, and the 4 twin choke 48 ID Weber Carbs. In 1981, I by being in school at the right time met someone who worked with someone who owned a Cobra (supposedly). I knew what a Cobra was so I went with this friend after school (with my camera). He had a 289 roadster, up on jack-stands and covered with a big blanket, a 427 coupe. I didn't know enough at the time but I got a lot of pictures (Pictures are all over the internet, #65) and it struck me odd that it was right-hand drive. The car was the same one that was sold to Michael Schumacher in 2005 for close to 2 million. There was only one 427 coupe that was never actually finished by Carroll Shelby and the 289's are worth several times that amount but it was so cool to actually see and touch a car of that historic significance.

There was nothing AC about those cars, every nut bolt and body panel was changed or modified.Shelby went to court to prove they were not ACs. They were Cobras.

Great Video and awesome pictures. Surely one of the most beautiful and interesting historic Cars around. Besides FFR a South African Company "Superformance" had them redesigned with Peter Brooks and Jim Price's input and are manufacturing them as a modernised slightly larger version, coming with aircon. and all the modern jazz. So if you want one as a driver I would check them out too.Regards Harry

The last six Daytona’s were supposed to be dumped in the English Channel. That god someone saved them. Incredible that Shelby and ford said to dump them. They didn’t want to pay to ship them back. They weren’t racing that model anymore so just throw them away????

After all these years still dances beautifully on the track. I would rather have Daytona Coupe over any other Ferrari, except maybe 250 GTO :)

i think a lot of us want these cars to keep racing until they drop dead rather than seeing them garaged or put in museums, even if it does mean someday all of them will have wrecked or died. These things deserve to be able to go out screaming just like they went onto the tracks screaming 57+ years ago. At least, I think that would make Carroll Shelby and his guys proud.

what a stunning exhaust note, such a huge sound for a small block 289. 390 bhp from a 289? wow is this a typo?

@soupercooper - No, not a typo. One of the strongest small blocks ever made. Stunning is a great word to describe that unique exhaust note. Show me a Corvette at the time with a 283 or even a 327 or 396 that could do 196 mph down the Mulsanne Straight. P.S. - don't bother trying - there isn't one!
