Berry bushes are an often overlooked food source. Most attention is paid to persimmons and apple trees, food plots, and acorns, but strategically placed berry bushes can have a drastic impact on your hunting and habitat. In this video we go over four berry bushes you should plant or look for where you hunt!

Elderberry. I have seen deer standing on their back legs eating the leaves.

A couple years ago I planted some American Hazelnuts. From what I've read, wood ducks, turkey, deer, squirrel and other animals enjoy these. I purchased mine at Arbor Day Foundation.

Great educational video. Shrubs get overlooked in the whitetail woods too often. The PictureThis app would help me identify shrubs on my farm and invasives I should consider getting rid of.

Picture This could help me ID tree species for TSI/hinge cut project I’m about to start as well as generally hel ID what’s growing around the farm and what the deer are browsing on most. Surprised you didn’t mention R.O.D. (too much tree?) or something like strawberry bush or buttonbush. Putting chicken wire (or planting inside a hot fence or cage) really helps all these bushes get established enough to withstand deer pressure. Just curious (prob should ask in your other video) - do you go just generic D. virginia or a certain cultivar for your persimmon plots?

Thanks for commenting! Email me at informedoutdoors@gmail.com for your code for a free month of premium membership for PictureThis! As to your questions, I didn't mention red osier dogwood simply because I was looking for more traditional "berry" bushes. It is certainly a great choice to promote on your property. The specific species of persimmon I go for is typically the generic persimmon because of the hardiness. I'm in zone 6 so I kind of fall in between the recommended hardiness zones that are recommended between the Asian and American variety. But the simple answer is it's also what tends to be available at my Missouri native plant nursery.

Informed Outdoors Definitely can’t go wrong with MDC seedling ordering - 25 for $10 or 12, or go 100 for $34. Putting in bunch of wild plum this year, some dogwoods, persimmon, pawpaw etc. I always end up over ordering shrubs, oaks, conifers etc with the reason of “I need 10 but for $2-3 more I can get 25.” Located on the KS border east of the Marais de Cygne area. Excited to try this app out. Thank you!

If it were low enough they would browse on the leaves and fresh woody growth, but the berries are eaten mostly by birds. They’d definitely be pretty to look at though.

Your head bounces around so much as you talk, you look like a bobble head. Your pointy hat accentuates your bobble head look. What did you say? I was distracted by the bobble head. Turn off the sound and watch. Your head never stops moving up, down, back and forth, forward and back, twisting left and twisting right. Now that I’ve typed this, I can’t even remember what you were talking about. Oh yea some bush tree thing....
