I think your suggestions make sense. Getting rid of the unnecessary frequencies of each instrument to make room for others is key. I have not yet mastered (no pun intended) this process but trying. I’m still trying to control transients while keeping dynamics.

*How do you make sure your mixes don't sound flubby and filled with mud?!? Share your thoughts below! 👇👇👇*

Excellent Bobby. Thank you. This was a combination of your other videos that I've already been applying. Cutting the low end information from instruments that don't need it had helped my mixes considerably.

CLA keeps all the "mud" on overheads, room or toms. It can add a lot of character. I like to use a pretty steep low shelf to adjust to a desirable level 😊

Your videos are very informative man, I actually just finished mixing a song mixing along with some of your videos . Thanks a lot! I m struggling with a question at the time , nowdays a lot of people listen to music (unfortunately) on the phones on crappy speakers , I was thinking if it's a good idea to start adding a third guitar that's mono in the middle so in situations like this , there is still some guitar information there but I'm not sure how to mix a guitar track like this, how to handle it in the mix so it doesn't mask the base and my other centered information

Do what hetfield does. Drop the centred guitar volume fader by 6 Db.

Just what I was looking for, I've just finished my first cinematic piece, and it's huge, even after grouping, printing the sends and lowering the amount of channels significantly I'm still at over 35 stems, needless to say I have a fair bit of correction to do

Excellent tutorial man, thank you! Noob question: why did you choose the shelf curve instead of the classic HPF on the distorted guitars?

Im also interested in this question Bobby.

I was wondering this as well. I tend to play it safe and cut out all the low end below 100ish

Referencing is not the next best thing. It is the ONLY thing. It is by far the cheapest and most underated step that the pros use but rarely talk about because it is free. Any adjustment made towards the end of a mix and sometimes during the session without referencing is pointless. Be it levels, eq, compression. Our ears adapt to any sound under 30 seconds or even less. Match volume between your track and the reference's then switch very regularly to keep fresh ears. It will boost your confidence by pointing to flaws much faster 😊

100% agree. Great comment! It's incredible how fast our ears can adapt. I actually have a video where I sabotage your ears with an eq boost to show how easy it is to lose perspective and the importance of referencing: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eYasqqqHaNSNn6s

pretty good and informative video. But how do you deal with super Low tuning Guitar? (Baritone/7,8 & 9 strings guitars) same way you shown (starting at 10:20)

Really good video 👍. One question: you use sometime the Cubase Equalizer and then the fab filter equalizer. When you use which and why? Is it to save cpu power?

Do I need a dedicated headphone amp or DAC/amp to mix on a pair of low to mid impedance headphones? I’ve seen this recommended but feel like the yield on the investment for $500 amp is pretty low. But I’d love to hear your thoughts. Currently using the headphone out on my SSL2 interface.
