Hi Vince found you this morning - I’ve watched and subscribed to many, many narrowboat vlogs - it’s funny why some hold and retain my interest and some don’t. You have that rare magic ingredient.... so whatever you’re doing, keep it up. As a 61 year old in last throws of my work life, I dream of following your lead and am plotting a future “cruising the cut”. Keep it up I’m looking forward joining you on your narrowboat adventure!

How much did I love this video. I grew up on the river lea. Rye House. My mother was born in Ware. My paternal great grandfather, Henry Silver, was the lock keeper at Hertford Lock for some years. This video brought some wonderful memories flooding back for me. I now live on the scottish/cumbrian borders, so this really was a joy for me. Thank you so much.

I would definitely give you a 10 out of 10 on that last bit. They sure didn't give you much room to turn around. That was a great job. Well done. I don't think this would have been my first choice for a cruise....too crowded through London and this bit at the end...would have totally discouraged me from the river. I kept think of being stuck in a parking lot when I was just learning to drive. It took me 1/2 hour to get out of it in the dark. These 2 videos gave me the same white knuckle experience. Thanks for sharing and good luck on the way back. Have a Blessed day.

Narrowboat Cruising & Lifestyle So I had my first night back at work last night after Shielding for 4 months and it got me thinking what Vince’s plan for the future. I haven’t quite grasped what your plan is so I thought just. ask and so... Have you retired? Are you going to moor up somewhere and live from that location? Are you going to travel up through the canal system and find somewhere to settle And lastly where do you get fuel from I’m guessing your fuel storage is massive but how much do you use? I’m interested to learn only this going to work is getting on my nerves😂
@NarrowboatCruisingLifestyle
@NarrowboatCruisingLifestyle 4 жыл бұрын
@@absolutebollox Hello Tel, the plan is to continuously travel at a slow pace around England and Wales for as long as the funds last, and as long as I'm healthy enough. As you know I'm not lazy, so if I have to, i will get the tools out again! Aitch has got the same engine as a London Taxi, so it's economical. There are fuel points (mostly boat yards) that sell pink diesel (cheaper) as you use your engine to charge your electrics, heat your water etc. tax on fuel is very low. I have tried to get rid of all my debts, because like you said it's getting on your nerves, I realized I was knocking my pipe out just to pay Debts and Taxes. Hope that answers your questions Tel. speak soon Vin

Narrowboat Cruising & Lifestyle Sounds Idyllic Have you got a route and time schedule worked out it must be a massive undertaking to plan everything I’d love to travel up to somewhere picturesque and spend a day with you and take a look at Aitch Just a thought...you should consider advertising weekend breaks where people could spend a day or two with you and get a taste of life on a narrow boat It would definitely help to fund your journey and possibly keep you sane We bought a holiday home and use it quite a lot it’s probably where we will retire to when the time comes and also offers a care free lifestyle although the ground rent constantly goes up which is worrying The canals have always appealed to me as do all the rivers my aunt and uncle had a boat on the river Ouse moored just outside St Neots I loved going there Stay safe👍
@NarrowboatCruisingLifestyle
@NarrowboatCruisingLifestyle 4 жыл бұрын
@@absolutebollox No time schedules Tel, (trying to take as much stress out of the game) no real plans other than to explore and discover places that I've never been to or seen! Costs £900 a year to put Aitch on the waterways, that includes all the waterpoints, rubbish points, toilet emptying facilities etc. When I get through London and settled, tap me up and we will do something. There is a lot of maintenance on one of these Narrowboats so that will keep me busy! I've not been doing it long enough to give you a fair assessment of it all, but so far I'm loving it! speak soon Vin

Having grown up in Ware (and still having family there) it's nice to hear about your impressions of the town. There used to be a malting by the short arm you saw shortly after going under the road bridge, and possibly a mill before that so I've always assumed it was for that. The 'old' wooden bridge isn't actually that old (in the scheme of things) - Modern things not lasting as well as they should!

Hi what a super trip up the river to Hertford , you are doing well already as a new boater. Like to make a comment on that lock you did. Double width locks on rivers and canals can vary so much for various reasons but in general I have found that if the paddle is raised about a 3rd travel on the same side as the boat with the boat back toward the bottom gate, the flow of water will cross the lock go down the other side and back again holding it against the wall its on. When all is settled raise paddle further, go and hold rope cos it will have slackened and you will be in control. I also found on double locks just opening the boat side gate should be enough to continue out meaning all your work is done from one side of the lock. Look forward to the journey back. (PJ)

I'm watching this from India - in 1968 my family bought a boat from what used to be Blank's Boatyard in Stanstead Abbots, I think that's now the Marina. Between 1977 and 1990 I lived in Ware. So your videos are bringing back many memories. Only problem I have is that your camera's talent for filming mosquitoes, etc. makes me keep trying to swat my computer screen as we have lots of those things in India. New Gauge House is the start of the "New River" which takes water from the River Lea where it's still clean and takes it to London as part of the water supply. (Opened in 1613). There is (or use to be) another intake near Stanstead Abbots from the Great Amwell Spring. Really enjoying your videos and hoping to retire to the canals myself.

Very nice, a few (hopefully helpful) comments if I may? AN intake house is where water is taken from the river for an industrial process (or for drinking water) You may want to reduce the lenth of your centre line. If it falls off the boat it looks as though it's long enough to wrap round the prop. In a lock, if you open the paddle on the same side as the boat, the water will keep the boat into the side. At 39:12 there looked to be moorings on the Armco? When winding, if you stick the nose in, and push the tiller right over, you should be able to drive the back end across.

FYI, you are supposed to give way to canoeists and sailing vessels (how, I have no idea). I love that you just show your trips in normal time. It is soothing and gives us time to enjoy the views. (BTW, I thought your first Winding was good. Probably because you took your time over it.)

Thanks Mike, Very generous with the Winding marks. Where there are not a lot of places to moor the boat around here, the last couple of moorings have been under trees (not so good) but working fine before that!

Try and open the paddle on the side your boat is the water hits the other side and then comes back and pushes your boat against the side

Thanks for the tip Kathleen, I will remember that, didn't have much choice on them locks as both only had one paddle working, but if I go back I will tie up on the same side as the working paddle (if I can remember)

I would sure be hesitant to walk those gunnels to get to a bollard for the centerline or get back on the boat that way. wouldnt take much to bounce you loose and get pinned between the boat and the wall. But that's just me.

The water bus has to wind in the same spot, that final bridge is low! Have to say the bottom gate at Ware lock is bloomin' heavy.

Wasn't impressed with that lock! When I was there it was in a poor state! Hydraulic fluid leaking everywhere. Environment Agency maintain it, I'd say not very healthy for the water life!

Newgate was a prison wasn’t it? Or is it Highgate? An intake house would be the office where inmates would be taken to be registered, given prison garb, I suppose, I only know from reading books so hopefully someone better informed than me can help. You did fine winding , I’d have been stuck sideways 🤣😂🤣
@NarrowboatCruisingLifestyle

Hi jillipepper, yes Newgate was a famous prison in days gone by. I thought it must be something to do with water, but who knows, you could be right!
@WhiskeyGulf71

Nothing to so with prisons !!! Its where water is taken from the Lea & fed in to the New river. That took me three minutes looking on the internet.

@@WhiskeyGulf71 I didn't have to look on the Internet to find out that not all the arms on the Lock Gates are painted white, on the Shropshire union canal they are painted GREY! Just Saying!

Narrowboat Cruising & Lifestyle Not sure what you are just saying ? This thread was about the intake house not lock gates. Whether or not the Shropshire has grey gates is irrelevant mate, the arm ends everywhere else i've seen are painted white to make them visible from a distance.

Is there any rule about who gives way to who on rivers and canals ? Watching you approach and pass the moored narrowboat and moor for Ware lock made it look so simple but I cant believe it's really so simple, did it take very long before you before you were doing it as perfect as you are doing it now and did you occasionally "bump" other narrowboats when going into a lock or getting into a space for mooring in the early day's when you were not as experienced as you are now ? After you went under the A10 and everything suddenly changed to open countryside, could you have moored up along there if you wanted to and stayed for as long as you wanted ? I don't understand the mooring rules yet. When you had to do a 180 degree turn at the dead end, you made it look so simple, does Aitch have a bow thruster ? Thanks for filming all your journey, it was really nice to see it from start to end and to see how the scenery suddenly changes !
@NarrowboatCruisingLifestyle
@NarrowboatCruisingLifestyle 3 жыл бұрын
Most of it is common sense! You give way to sail boats, or approaching a bridge you give way if the oncoming boat is closer etc. The problem I found was confidence! Even the most experienced boater has bumps and scrapes. You can moor anywhere on the towpath side for 2 weeks unless otherwise sign posted. No, Aitch has no bow thruster! Secret is to take your time and don't let anyone rush you! Cheers Vin
