When I was taking a live music production class, a local band came in and performed this piece and at one point let us go on stage and stand in the middle of all the performers as they played to learn the sound difference or whatever. Anyways that might be one of my strongest music based memories, having this played and sung full level from 3 feet away. Music is so powerful

Oddly when my guitarist suggested playing it in the band I though, oh that's a nice easy bass song...... I mean it's still not exactly hard but the guitar part is a lot easier :-)

OMG i got to your comment so late, 4 years after 🤣 but: there's multiple ways to think of the notes outside of the major scale for the key we're on; in other words, there's more than one scale from which we can "borrow" notes when playing that alter the soundcape built throughout the song: in this case, the song is in the key of A major but borrows both the minor third (or b3 as it's sometimes written, here it's the natural c note) and also the minor seventh (usually just written with the number 7, we only clarify when it's a major 7th "MAJ7" or a flat or diminished 7th "b7/dim7") both of these notes, b3 and 7 come from the A minor scale, so they provide a different sound quality and color to the melodic bassline. In this song, there's only three chords and all of them are diatonic to the A major scale, this means all of the use notes exclussively from the A major scale, so there in no deviation from that in the harmonic construction of the song. But these borrowed notes from other scales, that show up in various instruments and also the voice, along with the range in motion and intensity, and variations in instrumentation, give the song a lot of movement in other interesting ways
