Thanks for the videos. I'm going to take some of your tips and work on my 455 varmint. I did very well this weekend at a 100 yard offhand "turkey" shoot we have every year. I used Federal Champion Target ammo in 22LR. Keep the videos coming!

You need to season the barrel when switching ammo as you have realized. Wonder what the results will be if you redo the test keeping that in mind? Did you figure out what is causing the vertical? I would not be too happy with a gun that was shooting groups like that at 27 yards. Hope you find the true potential of the gun.

i floated the barrel, build a cheek piece out of tape and cardboard and left the trigger standard. The biggest factor i found was ammunition.I changed from T22 target to sk rifle match (lapua) and my issf target average score went from about 94 to 102 in my lux 452 (using a tactical scope). grouping was under .5moa @ 50 yards without bedding the action. Although i was weight and rim thickness grading all the rounds, the sk tolerances seem to be so tight i had a hard time separating them. these little rifles are devastatingly accurate in the right hands. The two things i may do further is increase the firing pin spring power, and bed the action.

Looking at your 25 yard results and scratching my head, you should have had all 5 in same hole. I think it's the bipod, I find it much harder to shoot it. I have a varmint CZ 455 with set trigger and laminated stock and using cheap ammo including cheap Remington golden bullets I was getting half an inch groups off sandbags give or take at 50 yards. With Eley Target I was getting about 1/3 of the inch. The ammo price for Eley Target is about equivalent to Wolf cost (60 bucks for a brick now, I paid more 2 years ago) I discovered the ammo one day while at the range, it was first time shooting good ammo and I was impressed. I never shot wolf, but now I have 2 boxes to try as well as SK+ and Geco for bolt action. There is a recall on my trigger and I haven an option to return gun to CZ and get a refund I paid almost 600 with taxes, shipping and transfer fee or I could get a standard trigger and 3 magazines or 60 bucks check. I kind of wanted to build a custom 10/22 with Kidd barrel and T3 summit biathlon action with straight pull. I just love the fact that you can buy 10 round Ruger mags on sale for 10 bucks that sit flush with the gun.

+Dima Prok The other issue is that I'm shooting two different kinds of ammo and trying to do groups. That's like cleaning a rifle and trying to get a good group before it's properly fouled. I learned alot from these videos and will doing things differently in the future. My CZ has shot one ragged hole groups at 75-100 yards so you're absolutely right, these results were poor

Like what you've done so far with the 455, 'cept for not doing a 'Bump' check (use a rubber mallet to strike the rear of the action to see if the sear will release the firing pin), to see if it might go off accidentally should it hit the ground hard, not showing or commenting on the action being cleared prior to doing any maintenance or anything else ... Looking forward to #5 whenever it shows up. :-).

I'll have to try that but I'm not too concerned about it. In our competitions "bolt open, mag out" is strictly enforced between stages and between movement. It's been engrained on my brain to always have the bolt open unless I'm shooting. I'll have to do it though and let you know how it goes.

I 👂 stories about ww2 snipers using 22 calibre on very special ocations ,one time on a gun show a seller had one 22 calibre from ww2 era whit a nice scope he told me to story but i wonder if those rifles were only for training ,snipers could had use a silencers if noice was the problem, but i know that in the ww2 they used anything to accomplish victory.

Are you going to do a part 5? Or did you lose interest since the rifle actually seemed to shoot the same or perhaps worse after all of your hard work and modifications? Honestly not trying to be a smarta$$ but I was hoping to see bullet stacking in the 4th video. I thought you might play with the torque values on the action screws. I really like your videos. You do a nice job sir.

Are you running oddball brands consecutively through the bore? I would clean the bore between brands. The wax can make groups sporadic. I have one rifle that really hates it if you mix a single oddball in. Opens up groups to the size of a.silver dollar when normally it cloverleafs.

Very interesting. Haven't tested that but I guess we should. I have only run lapua center x and wolf match target. I believe that both are made in the same factory and some say they are exactly the same but test results I've seen would tell me different.

I have this gun on order and I am thinking about a primary arms 4x14 and they have 2 versions a SFP with illuminated mildot reticle and a FFP mildot dot reticle. Looks like the parallax is down to about 10 yeads. Which model would be better for shooting matchsticks and cards like you do at 30 yards? I would probably want to shoot to 100 yards maximum. Thanks

Absolutely. Have you watched our videos with John Krieger of Krieger barrels or our video with George Gardner of GA precision about barrel cleaning? You should, very imformative. I will tell you that when cleaning you should always use coated cleaning rods rather than bare metal and you should always use a bore guide like those from Possum Hollow Bore Guides. never drag anything back across the crown of your barrel. Here are some links to those bore guides and rods.

Notice how the second 27 yard lapua group went a little higher? That's because the chamber is getting hotter and warming up the ammo.

vertical stringing can also mean the firing spring is too weak, or the pin is fouled. clean it and if the stringing persists, you can get more powerful springs. theory is that it screws with the initial burn rate. is particularly evident in H&R single shot rifles with external hammers when they attach the cocking lever.

Hey Bryce,can you do a video on what you use to clean the 455? Do you use a bore snake or a one piece rod? What's good to clean and oil it with?
@LongRangeShootersofUtah
@LongRangeShootersofUtah 10 жыл бұрын
I've actually never cleaned it. I'm not a big fan of cleaning as you just need to refoul the barrel to get your accuracy back afterwards. However, if accuracy starts to go south I will clean it. Haven't had to with this rifle yet. I do clean the bolt and chamber though. I use frog lube cleaner and lube very lightly. I would use a one piece coated rod and a bore guide as not to damage the chamber or crown. Solvents are a matter of preference.

Thanks for the series. It was interesting but I kinda cringed at how crude all the modifications were. Now that you have a lot more experience, have you considered removing this series? It seems like in the end, nothing improved. Also, curious why $12 for a package of 5 springs is a good deal? A BIC pen has a spring in it, and a box of them costs like $5. I am pretty sure that $12 for 5 springs is 2-10x markup.

First of all get rid of the bipod and get some sandbags. At that distance it should be one hole. Get some sandbags and sit at a table and you'll see a big difference. Glass bedding a 22 rifle is a waste of time and money. Triggers will help but the accuracy is all in the barrel tolerances and the action as well.

bob jones bob jones it was a test to see how Action screw tension effected accuracy not "the ultimate test ever" of accuracy for the 455. I'm struggling to see your point bob.

@bobjones263 8 жыл бұрын
My point was mentioned previously. If you want to get the best accuracy get rid of the bipod regardless of action tension. Anyway.it's your rifle do as you wish.
@LongRangeShootersofUtah
@LongRangeShootersofUtah 8 жыл бұрын
bob jones I get what you're saying but if you're loading the bipod properly there isn't much benefit in lugging a bag around for the front? The real issue why these groups aren't great is because I was switching back and forth between ammo from Wolf to Lapua. Each has it's own unique coating and I'm learned since that just as with centerfires after you clean them, they require fouling shots. I was also rushed and didn't have the best conditions by far. This was an early video and i've come along way since. Sincere question, where does your expertise with smallbore come from? Do you shoot benchrest?
