4 Pricing Strategies for Videography: In this video we cover how much to charge for videography and the 4 main pricing strategies I suggest for solo video producers. Quit pulling your hair out over your pricing for videos. The 4 different strategies are hourly rates, day rates, value pricing, and retainers. Hopefully you can take some of these structures and apply them to your own videography business!

I've googled this subject so many times and this is the most helpful explanation I've found yet!! I'm transitioning into the value pricing stage of my career and it's a challange. I used to price my freelance packages based on hours and the abstract idea of "experience". The transition is hard because sometimes, even if a client is a "real" business, they may not be thinking about ROI as much as trying to save their superiors (or themselves) money. They might take convincing, or they'll just keep shopping around. On the other hand, one freelance project I quoted was actually so small of a fee that the client was alarmed. Lower numbers can suggest lower skills, or in this case, lack of understanding of the scope of work that the client is envisioning. I ended up having to decline the project because they were asking for way more work than I expected, and I was still working a full-time job while finishing up a feature lenght documentary on the side.

How's thing Ryan. I have recently started out as a Videographer working with clients in the Fitness and Wellbeing industry. I'm just wondering would you have any metrics as how to measure the value of a project with a Personal Trainer for example who may not see ROI immediately but would rather utilise the video to gain social media clout and eventually clients in the longer term? Influencers would be another example, no immediate ROI.

I still see production companies use the day rate or structure base pricing, how come they have not moved to Value pricing? Some of them are here on KZbin.
@ryansnaadt
@ryansnaadt 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment! Value based isn’t widely adopted in the industry since it’s a bit abstract and subject for each project. Production companies tend to put rates on their crew, gear, and editing which is following day rates. But this other way of thinking about it applies to learning how much money the problem is worth to the client to fix with video. There is no “right” way, just showing people the various options and pros and cons.
@quickpickle
@quickpickle 2 жыл бұрын
I dont know.. seems like value based pricing can get you into an argument with a client if things aren't communicated 100% clear. My proposal is having day rates by category. For example.. day rate small/medium/large buisiness.
@ryansnaadt
@ryansnaadt 2 жыл бұрын
There are many ways to do it but I’ve never gotten in an argument on price. If you describe and explain how you go to the price then they should understand where you are coming from

Hey man, I got this job interview next week. The position is being a video editor, creative director and videographer full time so basically one man band for the whole year daily. do you suggest I negotiate the hourly rate or salary. I’m thinking salary but my sister said it’s worse to negotiate salary then hourly because what if you have to work overtime so in that case hourly pay is better but she works in a completely different field from me. What do you think?

@@ryansnaadt it’s a physical therapy clinic that’s looking for a filmmaker . Would it change how I negotiate if it was a production company?
@ryansnaadt
@ryansnaadt 2 жыл бұрын
@@georgelopez9517 At the end of the day, its a full time job so you will have limited ability to negotiate on salary unless you have some better insight to their problems and what they need. But either of these full time options wouldn't effect how much you would make too much. If you were bidding one off projects to either of these it would. Best of luck on the job decision!

The companies that I have dealt with don't know what their ROI is nor do they ever divulge their budget. I get the feeling that they know why you are asking, also. Therefore, not going to give you an honest answer. At least that's what I've come across. Maybe I'm approaching the wrong potential clients.
@ryansnaadt

I usually say something along the lines of the reason I’m asking the financial side is to ensure that this package makes financial sense for you. If you’re going to have to close 1000 more new customers just to break even we might not be a good fit, so I’m just trying to better understand how this could be an investment rather than an expense for you. I usually say something along those lines.

Not exactly. There are a few different camps on this, some clients think all videographers have similar quality, so they go for the cheapest. Some see the value in what the video can bring their business and want you specifically. Others get 3 bids, and choose the best from those 3. I would not fight on price with people. It’s the quickest way to the bottom. There is always someone who will shoot it for less

Why will the clients tell you their ROI lol, the crooks will only say "you just tell me what your charges are". That's how it works and we cant force them, just as much as a car showroom cant ask me what i will be using the vehicle for business or just to drive on the weekends and alter their price accordingly ! That's an opportunistic earning model and doesn't seem right, both to the client and to me.
