I'm glad someone is finally giving some of the credit to Blackpink's Coachella backing band, The Band Six. The band originally did a world tour with YG's Big Bang. They rehearsed with Jisoo, Jennie, Lisa and Rosé for five months prior to the two Coachella performances. They also backed the girls for "The Show." No word on whether they'll accompany Blackpink on their upcoming world tour!

Tablo’s wife, actress under YG at that time, connected Tablo and YHS and thus, Make a comeback to the music industry. Epik High music is always distinct Epik High just like PSY. Their contract ~ 3 years, much less than to the traditional idol.

Let’s just say that Blackpink’s Coachella performance was phenomenal. Not even interested in K-Pop but they made me stan them. On Aespa’s case, the four girls are very talented but it’s really SM’s fault having them perform without enough experience on a large crowd. And a western crowd.

TBH the entire YG lineup past and present has always had amazing live stage presence. Having watched YG family concert in the past to Big Bang, 2NE1, Winner and now Blackpink you can see they put a lot of emphasize on live concert and keep the energy level high which feeds to the crowd. However, this was never SM's forte as they have always put more emphasize on choreography. If you've been to a lot of Kpop group concerts you can actually see the difference between each agency. Hence, it worked well for Blackpink but sadly it backfired for Aespa when it comes to Coachella. That's because the Western crowd look for energy and vibe compared to Korean k-pop crowd. I say korean k-pop crowd because try looking for psy's concert... the energy level is totally different.

As an Aespa stan I agree. Direct the negativity to SM and not the girls. No reason for people to keep trying to start fan wars. I admit that BP has perfected stagecraft .. they are top of the chain. SM was really stupid with this one. Yes, these girls have lots of talent and could possibly become one of the biggest groups in 4th gen but they're barely in the 2nd year of their career and have not been to such a big live concert before (they barely have any experience with a real crowd, this also made their stage presence a bit lacking). Another thing I noticed is most of their songs just focused on high notes and impressive vocals, meanwhile most of the other performances (no hate to aespa or the performers) had more powerful, hyped up performances. Maybe their songs could've been remixed to fit the festival? Either way, SM shouldn't have pushed a rookie group who barely has actual crowd interactions and energetic songs into such a big music festival. Basically, at the end of the day, the big difference is preparedness. One group took what it meant to perform at Coachella to heart and the other performed as if it was just another stage. They tried to chew too much too fast. But as mentioned as well, I think what makes Blackpink so engaging to international fans is that they don't stick to the Kpop industry as strictly as some other groups. Yes, they have choreo but above choreo comes stage presence and interaction with the audience. If I wanted to see choreography I'd just watch a dance practice. What makes a live performance worth it is the liveliness of it all.

A, their live performances usually disappoint me, not because a lot of time they don't sing live, but because they all lack stage presence. B, Ningning who has the best stage presence in aespa, is still not very good. And C, I don't expect much from SM, trying so hard to push them when they are barely in their 2nd or 3rd year. I very rarely listen to kpop but I was really impressed of blackpink's performance at coachella. So I checked out aespa's performance. I can tell you why blackpink's performance was much better (a lot probably mentioned in this video already). First of all, the songs themselves. I don't think they got as popular as blackpink songs did in the west before they performed at coachella. Another thing about their songs, just straight up, they're not as good imo. You can just tell attention to details in blackpink's songs, the transitions, the build ups, melody changes and just their unique vocal styles and traits and how their parts are perfectly written for their vocals. Not saying aespa's songs are bad, but they're just not on that level. That's not on the girls but more on the production and writing/composition. Second, the performance, the energy and choreography. Let's just say, you can tell which group put more effort and detail in their preparation, just like you could when students present in your class, to keep it brief. Third would be the crowd, as I mentioned, blackpink has established their presence better in NA so even non kpop fans are at least familiar with their opening song which really set the tone for how they were received by the crowd. Then only comes the band after that. I absolutely love the live band, the distorted guitar, the drums, that's what really got me into their performance, as a fan of rock and heavier music. The instrument blended very well, served the song just oh so right and didn't overdo it. Then we can talk about little details that may or may not also have made big differences like the lights, etc. But those I would say are the biggest differences. Although not a regular kpop listener, I'm for it and wish all them groups success. I hope aespa's team realize what could've been improved and address them. Maybe it's just because I haven't heard enough of them but I feel like they still lack identity and they need to know themselves better in terms of strengths and how to incorporate them in their song writing, because I feel like that's one of black pink's (and any girl/boy band ever that made it big) biggest assets. Blackpink was 2 years old when they offcially invited to perform at Coachella as headliner of the stage while Aespa was 1 .4 years old when SM used connection through 88 rising for Aespa to promote themselves at Coachella . Coachella is for established and emerging artists. That's why you see top artists and unknown artists there. Aespa didn't come as a sub headliner like BP, having been promoted long before their performance. Aespa came more of surprise guests under 88rising, announced a few days before their appearance. Even if you failed, doing that at Coachella is not that bad at all. You can learn sooner. Besides, Ningning is only 19 and the others are in their early 20s. Plus, they didn't fail at all. They gave good performance; it depends on your knowledge and level of appreciation. It's like people can say Blackpink can't sing, are not singers because they compared them to Destiny's Child: Beyonce and friends, which I wouldn't agree. Because even if the gap is huge, technically, they can sing. They sing well and have beautiful color of voice. As artists, to think like they can get the invitation anytime they want is stupid. Coachella is one of, if not the biggest music festivals in the world. The chance to perform there doesn't come everyday.

Let's all remember Aespa were only sent to Coachella at the last minute because SM didn't want to lose to a "bunch of hags" and they don't want 2NE1 to claim victory. 2NE1 slayed Coachella and shook the K-Pop industry to its core when they rose from the dead. Puting aside the comparison since it's useless and unnecessary, the point about lack of crowd experience and lighting and music rearrangement did seem valid. SM could have done a bit more in all these places but instead just blindly rushed. If Aespa could have their MV's CGI played during their performance it would heighten the tension and release of the beats (like imagine the Black mamba slithering around and then the scene of it attacking. Or even the Æ joining the girls from time to time!). Even without remix or rearrangement the visual feast would boost the songs impact. The choreography for Aespa's are amazing but also are tight and closed, if they could have a bit more free choreo and spread out, it would have looked great on the huge stage.

I want to add something. (I'm not a fan of either group btw) Here in the Philippines, we have the word 'hinog' which directly translates to 'ripe' in English. I believe BP is very much 'hinog' for such type of performance and audience. Aespa is 'very much' Kpop group and what I mean is very Kpop. Like they keep sticking to what they do wherever they are in Inkigayo, Mubank and anywhere else. There are no changes. It's the same to majority of Kpop groups out there. Every performance is scripted. When they go to such performances and crowds, these groups have to remember that they are not performing in front of their fellowmen. And one last thing, stage presence is very hard to obtain even after months of training. It is something that comes out naturally, not forced.

This is the reason they've been invited once again and HEADLINING this year! That is Blackpink's choreo's are simpler than AESPA's, but so much more pleasing to the eye, much more fluid and better matching the music. So the overall quality and visual spectacle is so much more appealing to a general audience. SME, this is not about a dance contest with professional dance instructors giving extras points for difficulty. Your choreo was difficult AND not very appealing to the audience. I feel bad for the individual AESPA members. IMO it wasn't the girls that weren't ready for a world class stage, it was SME that failed the girls and wasn't ready to put forth a world-class performance. All SME had to do was look at what worked for BP, BP's live band, fantastic background lighting, and choreo designed to pump up a live audience, and not just to impress dance instructors. The best English speaker should have interacted with the crowd like Rose did. Say what you will about YG, but YG's group performances never disappoint on MVs or on stages. Yes, all the idols are world-class, but YG surrounds them with world class support teams, tough stage managers that keep the members on point, choreographers to make sure they are fire on stage, world class lighting experts, world class stage bands. So the members never feel they are just standing there all alone. And it seemed to me that AESPA members were standing there all alone. True...but they need to get exposed to it sooner or later though. Good learning experience for them. LIVE concerts/festivals are more than just stage presence.

American music festivals are about the MUSIC and not so much the dancing. The live band makes a huge difference and it’s a MUST to interact with the crowd.

blackpink knows how to perform and have fun. periodt.

Blackpink is way better at girl crush and more in step with what Coachella is. Swagger! Lisa and Jennie are HYPE. OVERALL production of YG team is better than SM. The Choreography for live stage need to be altered from media stage, Blackpink had the upper hand.

me too, its tiring, SM is trying so much for aespa to following blackpink, even though we all know aespa is not that popular and SM paying for aespa coachella stage, west invitation and album, tiring to knew and see
