One question you need to ask yourself is "Are you doing all the basics that you have been reminded to do over and over". If not, you will be bringing your lack of attention to detail with you to a new gym and you will have the same result

I had been training at my Gym since 2011/2012 but been training overall since childhood. I trained there for a couple of years before communicating to my coach I wanted to fight in MMA/Kickboxing. I think I was 20 or 21, no job, driving 1 hour to my gym to train 5x a week, 3-4hours per session. My coach never supported or endorsed me fighting other than competing in bjj tournaments and 2 amateur boxing fights. In my time there I saw newer and less experienced people than I be given more attention and opportunity than me to achieve the same goals I was working towards. I did seminars, took private lessons with him, etc. I’m not sure what more my coach wanted from me, or what I was missing that he didn’t see in me. I left the gym in 2024, and it sucked because I loved the environment and the friends I made and trained with all those years. I’m still bitter about it all to be honest.

I’m a lefty and I knew it was time to go when I asked the instructor to demonstrate the drill for someone that is southpaw (or is a right hander facing a left hander) and he just said “we’re not doing anything southpaw right now” like wtf dude lmao that’s my normal stance and the one I’m most comfortable in and probably would be in majority of a fight. I get not wanting to detract from the majority of class but imo as an instructor you need to be able to adjust a meet the needs of specific students at times too.

Hey Gabe, thanks so much for posting this video, especially regarding the point on injuries. I’m in my early 30s now but many of the coaches/trainers at my gym seem to train everyone as if they’re in their prime 20s physically. I had been frustrated lately, having gotten several injuries over the last few years on my hands/wrists that had put me out for months at a time, and just recently getting an ankle injury that’s put me out right before a competition in May that we were training for. Although I’ve been with this gym for nearly a decade at this point, this video definitely has me thinking today if I should start considering another gym that maybe knows better how to work with fighters that are a bit older and maybe transitioning out of the competing stage. Thanks again!

It might also help to add in extra strength, conditioning, stretching, and flexibility work at this stage. And rehab exercises such as remedial band work on trouble spots and twinges, before they worsen. I’m also in my early thirties and have noticed the much slower recovery rate relative to my younger gymmates, but these things have helped me keep up or outpace them. Another thing I have found useful has been running. Along with the bloodflow and recovery benefits of the run itself, I think good cardio is really helpful generally. I stay much more controlled and responsive in sparring when I’m not gassed and sloppy. All this having been said, maybe you also need to spar lighter? I think with the right approach there’s no reason you can’t stay injury free deep into your thirties and beyond.

*Intresting points made. It can be hard to leave a gym if your friends with people there & live near by as it’s more then just a gym to train at it can allso be a social circle & extended family* *It’s not allways the gym’s fault if your not progressing. Are you stretching in your spare time ? lifting weights ? Running/Cardio. or are you turning up 3 times a week & eating doughnuts & watching tv in your spare time ?* *It’s a very diffrent thing to leave a gym due to not progressing v a lack of accountability.*

Yeah, I am taking a break from the gym I trained at, and honestly, I am thinking of making it prement. The classes were basically becoming fitness classes rather than martial arts training. All because the owner need to work out make up for their bad eating habits ( his own words, we have to do all these because i over ate on the weekend). Not mention all the no contacts injuries people were getting from this since they were doing them all with bad form. As someone who works in the field of biomecanics and wants to be able to move/train to later age, I no longer want to be part of that.
@derekbk90939 ай бұрын
This unfortunately happens at many times of gyms. Boxing, bjj, Muay Thai. Lessons taught by students while the owner/head instructor does less and less. Most of the classes end up being useless for the advanced. Moving gyms isn’t necessarily the best option especially if choices are limited. Find training partners you can train with on the side or do privates with the right type of people.

This was such a great video topic I really enjoyed. Lots of good insight on this as I am also sorta in this situation. At my gym, the main instructor there who always teaches classes is great, also known him for many years. He is a very accomplished retired fighter and has lots of experience. However, I am not feeling that his teaching is a good fit for me when learning BJJ. His entire game is good, but i am struggling to improve by BJJ skills whenever he teaches, as the moves are complicated and I find his instruction not very clear. Maybe his methods are not good for me? Or is it me? Since I can only go twice a week to train, but I been contemplating leaving this gym to go elsewhere to find ways to improve my skills despite me knowing the coach and having several friends here that I’ve known for many years

Is it normal in jiu jitsu gyms to treat newcomers as experimented athletes? I went to my first lesson last monday and the coach and the other guys just treated me as if I was already supposed to know everything about bjj. I found it quite strange that everyone had to do the same thing in class and everyone expected me to keep up with their pace, strength, ability and experience. Honestly felt kinda bad plus I hurt my neck due to rolling with the other guys. Any advice?

Not good ones, I’ve been to BJJ gyms where they treat newbies, like newbies. I’ve also been to some where they expect you to know what to do, and drill random things. Not a good experience, find somewhere that won’t end up with you regretting your training when you wake up almost every time.
