Hi James, just gone back to this video. You did well. I had a survey done pre-sale and mine was down to 1mm in places! However, it didn’t mean I had to walk away from it as I’m not afraid of a bit of hard work - negotiated an appropriate sum off the sale price to account for the work and disruption to have it done and away I went with a boat that now has a great new base plate (after a nerve-wracking maiden voyage to take its 1mm hull to a boatyard!)

Hi James ,Just found your project, Brilliant ,Exciting times , I've had 4 boats surveyed over the years, what an experiance, and worry. Will be doing a catch-up on what I've missed and will be with you from now on. Its a good well done video too. Stay safe, Proper Job (PJ)

Ron Webster Hi Ron, thanks for your kind words, yes what a worry that was but what a relief when she got the all clear!! Glad you like vids - I’m trying not to deviate too much from the main purpose which is to demonstrate the various steps and encounters in restoring a narrowboat. It’s good making the vids as it gives me a bona fide reason to be talking to myself !! Glad to have you on board, James

@@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt Hi James ,thanks for your quick reply ,you've the right attitude for what you are doing,it will be a hard slog but when completed will be very satisfying and rewarding. Now looking for No 5.(PJ)

Makes me wonder if measurements from inside the boat give any indication, considering what you found later. But with old boats you have to have one done for insurance.

She's in pretty good shape given her age. Springers were by all accounts built with thinner steel than is standard today, but she's got many years in her yet! Looking at the side of the boat, it looks like she had a sign attached - is she an ex-hire boat?

HI James, what a wonderful new channel you have here. Can I ask what your profession is and whether it has equipped you with the kind skills and knowledge you can apply to this project or if you are learning the skills as you go along? Best of luck with the project. It looks like a big job but you not daunted by it which is great to see.

Aaron's allotment hi there - I’ll take that as a compliment !! No, I work for a firm of surveyors in the city, I just like doing “some” of this narrowboaty work. I’m making it up as I go along to be honest - thanks for watching 👍

@@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt That makes this even more impressive. I really do take my hat off to you. Very well done so far and I look forward to the journey getting everything ready.

All seems fairly promising tbh, granted to some would find this scary but I have in the past seen a wooden butty re-floated after previously spending 40 years partially submerged.
@bubbafudpucker3974 жыл бұрын
Are the chalk numbers the thickness of the hull in millimeters? It seems about right to me. For those who don't want to look it up: 6mm is about a quarter inch and 4mm is 5/32nds.
@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt4 жыл бұрын
Bubba Fudpucker yes mms - I think the lowest reading was 3.6mm

I know it's a Springer but why was the baseplate/bottom constructed of thinner steel than the sides... Can't see it myself
@markjones47043 жыл бұрын
good point and the surveyor could not get underneath as it needed jacking up so he could see what it was like underneath

He must of received that drill during his apprenticeship
@lisabowers97714 ай бұрын
I was thinking I wouldn't be seen dead with that drill, it's not even 110v. 110v is industry trade standard for mains tools in the uk, listening to the results, 4mm will not flex over that short of bracing, unless it isn't welded to those frames. More attention should of been around the uxter counter plate,where oxygen and corrosion would naturally be.
@leona_devon4 жыл бұрын
what was the area he suggested you replace? By the prop?
@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt4 жыл бұрын
Leona Devon yes the prop was jammed but it’s now freed up. They are going to have a look at it as the stern gland may need replacing which is in that neck of the woods
@yogi1kenobi8 ай бұрын
I thought minimum WAS 4MM
@JasperJanssen4 жыл бұрын
On other narrowboat projects I’ve seen, they all had 10 mm base plates when newly built this decade. This one is 4 mm originally? Really quite a substantial difference.
