YES! YES! YES! Tip #1 People think they need to fill every second with a barrage of notes. I agree with you that silence is SOOOOOO powerful. YES YES YES! Tip #2! Singing the solo! I agree with you, though it seems to me the best solos can be sung along with by the LISTENER - if we think about all our favorites over the year, we can always follow along in our heads with them. The rest are totally new to me that I'm going to start to incorporate. Thanks for constantly moving us forward.

Great advice Marty! I'm a singer so find the phrasing natural in my playing. It adds so much texture and depth to the solo! I always try to let the guitar breathe.
@OriginalKingRichTv2 жыл бұрын
As a singer I understand phrasing as a concept but trying to learn the theory instead of noodling is what's hard to me. Noodling I can sound like I'm singing through the guitar. But when I'm trying to find the notes I actually sing and replicate their tones. I can't seem to follow. I play a lot of minor. But as a singers you know we base everything off do re mi. The major scale.
@OriginalKingRichTv2 жыл бұрын
My question is how can I overcome this
@DarrenClaxton2 жыл бұрын
@@OriginalKingRichTv I understand where you're coming from my friend, but for me, it's all about stepping out of that comfort zone and trying new things. singing in the minor keys is really interesting and opens up your tone and creates some really interesting nuances.

Your advice should come from Heaven through very good and sincere people like you Marty. Thank you very much. Cheers from Indonesia. As I understand: 1. Leave enough space. 2. Sing along with the licks. 3. Use words to tell story. 4. Repeat the pattern in various locations. Great advice. Hopefully it will significantly reduce my exercise that sounds too dry and too mechanical. Thank you Marty.

Every great guitar player always uses at least one of these 4 tips so yes Marty thanks for showing them..... I hope you will one day dedicate an entire lesson about spaces and rest on a 12 bar blues.... 99% of guitar players, and me too, have a bad timing in blues playing, and those great licks we ear our heroes play don't sound good when we copy...Hope you will make a lesson about this concept, there is none on youtube so you would be the first. Thanks you so very much.

Good tips, Marty. A help for me is to imagine communicating to an individual in the audience, or that batch of dancers, whatever. And this is a sometime thing: playing a clam a second time can help smooth over a boo-boo and even inspire a new direction for improvisation.

Four 'wise' tips. Thanks. Re repetition. I do this a lot when its just me and my guitar rather than a band setting. I'll take the solo from a song like 'Hotel California', cut half of it out but come back to the more familiar ear catching licks (like the beginning) that the listener's ear is familiar with. Skow it down, add a few pauses and it captivates (hopefully) the audience. In contrast, I'll play the complete solo in a band setting...its as much about band energy and image as it is the music. Anyways, the setting makes a big difference on how I use phrasing.

As a kid I watched this cartoon called Jimmy neutron. There was an episode where Jimmy invented a guitar that would play whatever note came to his head, regardless of skill. If he could think of it, the sound would come out of the amp in real time. I think about that show all the time, and I use the concept to help me phrase my leads.

rabbit0877 Try to mix the minor pentatonic with the major pentatonic, if you play 5 7 8 on the e, 4 5 7 on the a, 4 5 7 on the d, 4 5 6 7 on the g, 5 7 8 on the b, and 5 7 8 on the e, you will get a hybrid scale with all the major pentatonic notes and all the minor pentatonic notes in that one box, just kinda play around and phrase with those notes in that scale, make things try to work and sound musical by mixing those notes together, also another way you can break out of a box is learning all the positions of the minor pentatonic scale, or major pentatonic, any one of them really, if you learn all 5 positions you will have five boxes of whatever scale your playing in to use. If you dont get what i mean when i talk about mixing the major with the minor pentatonic, then look some videos up about it, and if your having trouble understanding how to get 5 positions of a scale, just look up all 5 positions, a tip also, you should learn the 5 positions for every scale your gonna commonly use, any scale tbh, but it is an absolute must to learn the five positions of the major and minor pentatonic, and it's also a must to learn to mix the major and minor pentatonic together, again if you need help with this, or you dont fully understand it, look it up and you will get more info, this comment goes out to both of you guys and anybody that needs help. Hope this helped, any questions, just ask.
