Always keep mulch, such as straw to keep soil protected!

I grow hardneck garlic so I try to pick the scapes when they're still pretty small. They're not too fiberous then, make a really good pesto that I freeze, and pulling the scapes when small keeps them from drawing off too much energy from the bulb.

May I ask, when you say 1st fertilize 2-4 weeks before last frost date and then 4 weeks after that. Do you mean, 4 weeks after the initial fertilizing or 4 weeks after the last frost date, for the 2nd time to fertilize? =)
@StoneyAcresGardening7 ай бұрын
4 weeks after the first fertilizing.

I forgot to plant mine last fall, so I put some cloves in the fridge for about a month and planted them out a few weeks ago. Nothing has sprouted yet, so I'm getting nervous!
@StoneyAcresGardening7 ай бұрын
I'd be very interested to hear how that turns out. I've read about doing that but have never tried it myself.

Thanks! Love me some garlic. What are your thoughts on leaving it wild in an orchard?
@StoneyAcresGardening7 ай бұрын
Sure that's a great idea. It will also help with some pests in your orchard.

Thanks for the tips! This is my first year growing garlic for bulbs, so I need guidance. Can I ask where you purchased the blue watering can?

Boy I have no idea! We've had it for a really long time so I don't remember.

Using Nutro-mulch, won’t 2” smother the plant? Or, do you have to worry about the crown of the plant being buried? I’ve always worry about using anything for mulch besides straw.

I had great garlic last year but after harvest and letting it dry out for a couple weeks in dry shade the garlic cloves went soft. Do you what I did wrong?

I noticed you have quite a bit of space between your plants. This year, my garlic came up in a bunch. Do I need to thin them. Thanks. Timely as always.
@StoneyAcresGardening7 ай бұрын
I space my plants about 4 inches apart. They need that space as they grow. I'm surprised they came up as a bunch, how did you plant them?
@denisesilvernail65257 ай бұрын
@@StoneyAcresGardening I had just a few. They were spaced when I planted but I had some friends come to the garden and they tilled when I was down because of some surgery so I am wondering if they all got pushed together. Can I shift them now
@StoneyAcresGardening7 ай бұрын
@denisesilvernail6525 I've never tried something like that so I'm not sure how they will react. As a root crop I don't thing they would like it much. You might be better off leaving them and just go with what you gave this year and then try again next yeat.

Can you use wood chips as a mulch over garlic?
@StoneyAcresGardening7 ай бұрын
I'm not a huge fan of wood chips as a mulch, but technically there isn't anything wrong with using them as a mulch. It's just my preference.

If only the lower leaves are yellowing, and the upper leaves are still green and healthy, is this a cause for concern?

Where do you live? That sounds like they are getting ready for harvest, if you live in a warmer climate it might be time? But for us ours won't be ready until mid July.
