For first try, I think the cheapest and most versatile is a teblet and the Touchosc. You can try different layouts, whats fits the best for your stile. And later invest a physical device.

I agree Touch OSC is good and versatile but I wouldn't recommend it as the entry point into MIDI for many reasons. Firstly you need a touch device which is already more expensive (and more fragile!) than an entry-level MIDI controller. Another issue is the fact that the possibilities are endless regarding the amount of controls and configuration, this results in "too many options freeze" for beginners. Starting with limited options is a good thing in this case. While very useful, I find the lack of physical controls on touch-screens a problem. It's easy to keep your finger on a slider while looking elsewhere but not so easy to do the same on a touch screen. Also, physical controllers give you eye-free haptic feedback which again, it's extremely useful in a performance setting. Having said that, if you already have a tablet go for it!

I hope the APC40 Mk2 is still a good choice at 2023. 😂

it is, aside from the size it’s the closest thing to a “standard” Resolume controller there is. The Akai Fire looks nice for launching a lot of clips too, then maybe a Midifighter Twister or Faderfox for adding more knob controls.
