I prefer the laundry sheets as well. They’re also great because they don’t count as a liquid. However, a lot of people are fanatics about using Tide laundry detergent only which is why they get away with charging so much for it no matter what size you buy.

You can also use Dr. Brenner's all in one bars of soap. It is all natural. Can use it to wash your hair, body, hands, face, as well as using it to wash dishes, and laundry. It can also be made into a creamy liquid soap and said that you can use it as an all purpose cleaner and use it as toothpaste. All I would really need to bring is my hair and body moisturiser.😊❤

Thank you whoever mentioned the gallon ziploc in the seatback pocket tip - tried it for the first time when I flew home yesterday, and it worked better than I could have ever imagined - I didn't have to pull my backpack out once during either flight! Remembering to take out anything and everything that I put in the pocket is a bigger concern for me than what germs might be in the pocket, but it still works just as well for remembering as it does for keeping things clean.

@SnowySpiritRuby

@@Mamm0th733GamingandEsports The one I was referring to was someone mentioned using a gallon ziploc and putting everything we need for the flight itself in there and putting that bag in the seatback pocket, so that all of it is handy and the bag keeps it clean; it also eliminates needing to get into the personal item during the flight, because everything we're going to need for the flight is in the ziploc.

If you stain your tank top, turn it around and wear it that way. I have also checked for laundry service as you said but also find a reputable laundrymat close to the hotel. I will always PAY for anything that makes my life earlier. And many times for the flight back home, I’m tired, so I will check my carryon no matter the cost. IF YOU GET A CHEAP FLIGHT, spend the difference on conveniences and enjoy the vacation.

Travel guide Sarah Murdoch (Adventures with Sarah) literally weighs every item of clothing as she decides what to pack in her small backpack. Even with bringing a couple of pairs of shoes she keeps the total weight, including the bag itself, to about 16 lbs. She focuses on layering and a harmonious color scheme. Her videos are a good complement to Laurie's.

I just got into the sudoku packing where you have a 9 square grid similar to a tic tac toe grid that is labeled for top, bottom, and layering piece. They match vertically, horizontally, diagonally, and the corners. I took some sewing interfacing and copied the grid so to pack, I just put one clothing item on each square, then pack them in packing cubes. Using this system, my young grandkids can easily plan and pack their own clothes. Then just add underwear, nightie, swimsuit, and dresses if you’d like.

Great tips: I try to pack less/lighter for each trip. For jewelry, I put necklaces in snack size baggies- one in each so they don’t tangle, and earrings in those mini zip locks you showed (also use those for my pills!).Then I put all the baggies in a larger zip lock if there’s room, if not, I stash the larger one for when I arrive so all the little baggies can get corralled after their trip tucked into all the nooks of my suitcase. For clothing, i do the same color coordinating you suggested, and lay it all out. Then pare down, til I’m at least weight. So between 3 or 4 tops that match my pants, I pick the two lightest weight ones to take. Between two dark pants I pick the lightest weight. It’s almost a game: what can I swap out that’s lighter? I even cut my shampoo bar into small chunks and just take one in a baggie. What fun! Maybe I’ll leave myself home next time to save even more weight! 😅Love your videos! Thanks again!

I have posted before but for jewelry I use small ziplock bags that are used by vendors to keep your jewelry untarnished. This way I can keep item separate. I then place them in a small soft bag that has pockets on each side. I will store earrings and rings in the pockets on one side and larger jewelry in the other one. The pouch is small enough to place in my personal item. If I wanted to I could just use the small ziplock bags and put them in my purse pocket. I always have a cheap pair of flip flops in my carry on. I slip them into the outside pocket. I use them as slippers and wear them around the hotel room. I have a pair of men’s sleep bottoms that are super thin and light weight to wear when i am lounging around the room. They are black and look really nice. In a pinch I could wear them to travel in. They look like normal black comfy pants. I have a short sleeve top that matches them for sleeping but I could also wear it as a normal top if needed. They are made from dry fit fabric. Throw on a hoodie and I could wear them to the airport and no one would know I use them as pajamas. 😃

Hi! First you have to check your airline's under the seat personal item bag dimension requirements because they can all be so different. Currently on a trip, and once again, managed to pack in just my backpack (it was a bit more full than I was hoping for, but still managed to easily fit everything into it). I decided about 2 1/2 hours before I left (so about 1:30 a.m. Monday morning) that I was going to bring both the sneakers and the sandals (instead of just the sandals), and I'm really glad I did, because the sandals would not have been comfortable enough for certain things, but they're super low profile (both together take up less space than one of my no-heel mary jane style dress shoes), so they still fit into a small amount of space (I use the drawstring cotton bags from my wool dryer balls because they're the perfect size for my shoes - I'm a W7-8, and both sandals fit into one (the bags are the Branch Basics dryer ball bags, in case anyone's wondering)). My mom was flabbergasted that I managed to pack in only my backpack - again - so I spread out everything I packed on my bed once I got there so I could show her exactly how much I fit into my backpack. I'll be bringing a suitcase of some description next month because I'll be coming for camp, but I'm still planning to keep it to a minimum; still trying to figure out how I'm going to pack my bugle, since it got dented by someone else shoving his bag against it in April (not enough to change the tone/pitch, for which I'm eternally grateful because there wasn't time to get it fixed if it had, but enough that I was highly unamused) - might wrap it in my towel inside its case, which means I wouldn't have to fit my towel in somewhere else.

I would try to wrap it like that too.

And I don't bring any jewelry, at least when flying - just a necklace-like thing that I only take off if it's going to get wet (shower, pool, etc.), my watch that also has my med ID plate on the band, and my EMF shield, which is also a bracelet. My ears aren't pierced, and I only have one pair of clip-ons that work for me, and I only wear them for very special occasions - concerts, Christmas Eve midnight Mass, weddings where I'm actually part of the wedding party (actually forgot them for my friend's wedding, but it worked out because I ended up with an ear infection that would have made it extremely painful to wear them), etc.; they're little gold simple rosettes with tiny pearls in the middle, so they go with everything (imho, they make me look more grown up and sophisticated, but they were my grandma's (her ears weren't pierced, either) and they're literally the only pair of earrings I've ever found that actually work for me, so I don't wear them often, and when I do pack them, I pack them in a little red heart-shaped earring case (was also my grandma's) so they don't get bent or broken in transit, since they get packed in my nylon drawstring toiletry bag, so there's nothing else to protect them; it's a really small case, though, smaller than your typical small stud earring display box that has the little pillow inside, so I can easily afford the space it takes up). And my mom mentioned to me for the first time yesterday afternoon about the possibility of her (and presumably someone else) driving out to pick me up and drop me off next month, instead of me flying, since what days I fly is pretty much entirely determined by whether 2 very specific seats are available (one particular seat for the small planes, one particular one for the big ones; fun fact - the window seats on CRJ200s are wider than the window seats in Economy and Economy Plus on 737-800s and 737-900s).

I have just returned from a 6 day interstate trip and I’m now packing for a 14 day international trip. In both cases, I count the number of days and divide by 2 for the number of tops required, and divide by 3 for the number of pants required. They clothes are rotated to air between wears and can be hand washed if required. My travel clothes are not included in this calculation. I usually throw in one extra top. My underwear is always one for each day and 2 spare. I don’t pack jewellery or cosmetics and it’s always carry on only for me.

You'd be hard pressed to fit something longer/taller than 17" under those United seats without it sticking out into the foot space. My 16.9" backpack just barely fits, and even it sticks out a tiny bit. They get a bad rap for some reason, but United's little CRJ200s (50-seaters) actually have more space under the seats than their 737-800s, 737-900s, and at least one of their Airbus models (either 319 or 320), and their window seats are actually wider than the window seats in coach on those bigger planes, too.

My brain can't handle it if I can't lay out everything such that I can see it all at a glance. As silly as it sounds, I had my stuff for the trip I'm currently on laid out for a good 3-4 weeks before I left - it was a little annoying because it was on one end of the sofa, but I worked around it. I thought when I put it there that I had it down to a bare minimum, but there were still a couple things I took out of the pile and put back away over those weeks.

And just yesterday my chiro told me outright that I needed to use something to prop my feet up when on the plane, so I did some searching yesterday, narrowed the foot swing options down to 3, then ordered the one that would arrive before I leave for the airport tomorrow. I figure I'll try that one out - if it works great, I'll probably keep it, and if it doesn't work very well, at least it's better than nothing on such short notice (and that also the FA can't claim is blocking the foot space) and I can always return it; because of the way my hips are twisted, I have to be able to have my feet separated without them being forced together, so I went with one that has separate spots for the feet, otherwise I would have gotten the one you recommend. Also planning to use the "gallon ziploc in the seatback pocket" trick that someone mentioned on the last video or the one before - I forgot to bring a bag for that when I flew here last week, so I'll try it on the way back; might take both a 1 gallon and a 2.5 gallon bag, though, so that I'm less likely to forget it in the deeper pockets.

@@TravelTipsbyLaurie Well, it came this morning in plenty of time. And OH MY GOODNESS GRACIOUS ME!! It made a GIGUNDO difference!!! The flight attendants didn't say anything, probably because it wasn't taking up any actual floorspace. I was able to sit on my wheelchair cushion in my seat for the first time ever because my feet were actually high enough to allow it, and sure, my shoulders and neck got a little tight after 2 hours, but that's primarily from the narrow seats, not from my feet hanging in midair - I didn't have to deal with my spine and most of my joints screaming at me after 20 minutes like they normally do when I fly. I will never fly without one again. I had been considering getting one ever since you mentioned it the first time in a video a good 3-4 years ago, but had never gotten around to actually getting one. Now that I have one, I'm never going back, even for just the short 40-minute flight between my home airport and DEN - my joints will never allow it. Camp is in the same area as where my parents live, so the flights won't be any shorter next month. And the gallon ziploc trick worked better than I ever imagined it could. Thank you to whoever mentioned that one!

I start with the bag. For 8 weeks I am limited to 8 kilos. I use a bagpack with 600 grams without wheels. This weight I can easily carry in the bus und leave it on my lap for some hours. Sandwich bags are cheap and great and the flimsy plastic bags too. For the flight and the first days I use old clothes to throw away and I leave them neatly in the hotel. I bought new sandals and wore them at home and got blisters after a few hours, so I return to the old sandals. I do expensive haircut and colour in my holiday. I buy bulky books in the airport and rip off every page I have read (because I am old, this feels like a sin). Food is important: dryed fruits, nuts and cream crackers survive every climate.

I don't usually pack jewelry, I just wear basic pieces that can go with every outfit. BUT I do have a metal tin (from a pack of mints) that I have for the rare trip when I do need to take jewelry. I can make bobbins out of index cards that fit into the tin with notches that I just wrap any chains around and then pad it out with earrings or whatnot, you can also put cotton balls in there to keep things from rattling around. Do you wear your real wedding+engagement rings when you travel? Curious if you think a dummy ring is necessary.

I started using those little clear zip type "pill pockets" for daily vitamins and meds , Tylenol, small jewelry and small items. They are cheaper in Walmart's pharmacy section than other stores' travel sections They are mini zip top bags that have a strip you can write on, and you can throw them away or bring them home and reuse them. For years I have travelled with a "in case they lose my luggage" bag that I can fit under the seat in front of me with all the items from my purse and what I need until a lost carryon is found. I used to travel with a small Samsonite tote with several compartments but I find it too heavy to carry as I've gotten older. I am looking for a small, inexpensive rolling personal items bag that will hold, meds and toiletries, small Laifen dryer (don't judge, I have silver curly hair), pjs, slippers and a change of clothes so if my carryon gets checked and doesn't arrive with me I have everything I need in case my carryon goes somewhere else. (It's happened!) Laurie, I was so happy to see a new video about smaller, leakproof silicone containers for creams and liquids. I purchase the 3 pk mesh bags for a quick trip to Iowa this summer and I loved that I could just stand them up and see everything! Thank you.

I just finished a 2 month, 10 country European holiday travelling only with one small backpack which weighed about 8kg. yes, you can save weight by swapping out smaller items like toothbrushes for even lighter weight ones, but the real weight is in clothes and shoes. I literally weighed every item of clothing I was thinking of taking, and was surprised by how much a single tshirt could weigh, even when it was labelled 'light weight'. I opted for block colour tshirts (which were actually activewear but didn't look it, the benefit being they dried super quickly after handwashing) and neutral bottoms, just as Laurie recommends. Every top worked with each bottom so it was never hard to figure out what to wear.

I just got back from an overseas trip. Air Europa had measurements listed, I felt we followed those, but they didn't fit their measurement cage they had. They did check them for free because our flight was so full, and several had to check bags that were the right measurements. We flew TAP Airlines coming back, and they were very strict with the Carry-on weight. If it went over, they charged you $125 to check it. One young woman was so upset....on the flight before that one, TAP ok'ed her luggage and on our flight it was .2 kg over, so she had to pay. Swissair's size limit for a personal item is ridiculous - 15.7 x 11.8 x 3.9 inches. That's less than 4" wide! The carry-on size is a bit more reasonable (21.5 x 15.7 x 9"), but 21.5" is less than the 22" that other airlines allow. The weight limit is 8 kg = 17.63 lbs. In that case, when the time comes, I think I might use a backpack style vest and put at least some of my dog's things that would normally go in a bag in the vest instead, then switch to a flat vest, or take the pockets off if they're removable, and put the first vest/the pockets in the overhead during the flight itself, so that the dog will be more comfortable on the flight. 100% to each his own, but I've been trying to figure it out for nearly 6 years how I was going to manage it for myself, and I think I might have finally solved my problem. The gate agent can't ping us for the dog's vest, since it's technically medical equipment. What I'm still left wondering, though, Laurie, is why a bag of the dog's stuff ( doesn't count as medical equipment - the dog is medical equipment, so why wouldn't the equipment (extra leash, extra collar, food, brushes, etc. - maybe not necessarily toys) for medical equipment be considered medical equipment as well? Makes no sense to me.

@@sarahwebber7384 Hi I think this is it: bit.ly/CompressionCubesReview but you use one zipper, pack your clothes and then the second zipper. If I put too many outfits in them, it does not really work that well. SSSS means you will get pulled over in security-it's a random thing.

Thanks for the tips. I'll be flying on Iceland Air (to Berlin) with a carry on allowance of of 21.6 x 15.7 x 7.8. Do you happen to know how picky they are? Also, what kind of food does TSA confiscate? Are gels for running (I'm doing a race) considered a liquid?
@sharonelsmore2177

We flew Icelandair, and they made everyone line up and fit their luggage in sizers. They had one for the carry on, and a really small one for the personal item.

@@sharonelsmore2177 Thanks! It's almost impossible to find a piece of luggage that is that narrow (7.8 inches). My London Fog carry-on is really close - 8 inches. I guess I'll just have to risk it and prepare for the worst.

Gels would count as a liquid, so may be limited.

Is there a "linear inches" max as well, or does it only list dimensions? Some airlines list linear inches (e.g. for United, the linear inch total is the sum total of the listed dimensions - 45" - so shape doesn't actually matter as long as it fits into the allocated space), some don't, so that would be something to check on - if they list linear inches, then the listed dimensions aren't strict; if they don't list them, then there's a good chance that they are. I can't imagine why .2" would make that big of a difference for a softsided suitcase, though (hardsided might be another story). For carryon bags (TSA allows just about anything in any size in a checked bag - there are very few restrictions for those, mostly limited to hazardous materials), unless they're liquids (including applesauce, peanut butter, hummus, cream cheese, yogurt, jam/jelly, cooked hot cereal, etc.) in containers bigger than 3.4oz, you should be fine to take them through security, and that's true regardless of where you're flying. However, entering Germany, and re-entering the U.S. (sounds like you're flying from the U.S. based on what you said) will be a _very_ different story - food import laws apply when flying out of the country, so make sure you look those up, and they apply regardless of carryon or checked bag. German security on the way back (highly unlikely that it will be TSA, unless the Berlin airport is one of the small handful of foreign airports that has adopted TSA for security) could be different, too, since each country is allowed to make its own rules about airport security, so make sure you look that up as well - some countries' airport security are more strict than TSA, some are less.

Hi, I tested it. For screening, it stays in your bags. When you show your passport to an officer (if not your drivers license), it cannot be in a passport booklet. So take it out before you get to the officer so you are ready. Does that make sense?

Laurie, I really want to go to Asia and eventually South America/Africa, but I have anxiety flying with airlines from developing countries, not knowing their safety standards in aviation. Do you trust any airline from any country?
@TravelTipsbyLaurie
@TravelTipsbyLaurie Жыл бұрын
Hmmm we would research accidents and what led to accidents on those airlines. For some cultures, a pilot cannot disagree with the captain for example which would lead to fear in us. But look at all of the successful flights in the countries you mentioned. We have flown on Austrian, Lufthansa, and Easy Jet I think in Spain. Sorry I cannot really answer your question.
