Here in Ireland, Border collies are mostly working dogs, and much less companion dogs. This is because the farmers who breed them put down the ones that they can't train to work. Only a few find homes with people who are ready to cope with a hyperactive, territorial maniac that will herd their children around the yard. That said, I *love* border collies as companion dogs. They're just not easy to live with because they want to be people too :)

@@bxnniq6769 I live on the Leinster/Munster border, and my knowledge comes mainly from talking to people in the area. Having said that, dog trials are kind of a big thing here, so maybe it's a local practice

Our Rough Collie died 2 years ago he was 11 years old. The best dog we ever had we miss him every day. We can't afford a puppy as they cost so much but Collies are wonderful dogs you have to learn to live with the hair everywhere but it is so worth it.

I had a male Rough Collie until he passed away in 2017 and I now have two female Smooth Collies. I found my rough male was more laid back while the two smooth females are more reactive and vocal. Overall they are loyal loving dogs.

I live in Florida and I had a Smooth Collie many years ago. She was a rescue and the only Smooth Collie I had ever seen. Until, 7 years ago, when I rescued my 2nd Smooth Collie! She is still with me and is my best friend.

I would take issue with the statement that Border Collies are less common as working dogs and are more companions. They may not be used so much as cattle dogs but they most definitely are very popular as sheepdogs.

You didnt mention the Welsh collie, a separate breed from the border collie , that they are confused with, and many crossed with border collies. But they are a unique collie genetically.

The Sheltie was once known as the Shetland Collie but there was some outrage from the Rough Collie club, so the Sheltie was renamed Shetland Sheepdog, sometimes called the Shetland Terrier.

The writer of lassie actually grew up with the scotch collie, or English shepherd. A dog type that acts often like lassie from the show. Hollywood used the rough collie for it’s showy looks. Also I think Shellie’s are basically mini scotch collies.

I've had both E.S. and shelties, besides many collies. English Shepherds are distinctly different in temperament, though also fine dogs. But Shelties are NOT miniature collies, though there is a small admixture of collie genes from a way back. They have a long history of their own, and their temperament is quite different. Collies tend to be more calm and laid-back, and one of the least aggressive breeds in the world, though they make great watch-and-bark dogs!

Scotch Collies /English shepherds I do know. You’re correct about collies, surprisingly aggressive at times, but in a unique and amazing way. Crazy, but crazy good.

My Border Collie is so hyper, and will NEVER leave me alone. I have to close a door between us to have peace, and even then, I know he’s laying down against the door, just waiting on me on the other side 😅 I’d say, it’s been worse on my own ocd/cortisol problems, but he’s learning me, and when to calm himself. It’s all a learning game over here for the both of us! I’ve had a few friends say he looks like he’s mixed with a short Bulldog, a Corgie(because of his fat butt/splooting), and even an English Cocker Spaniel(because of his long ears&waves). At this point, idk; all I know is that it’s so funny when he tries to play rough with me, and ends up hearding me around the house with his scary left to right head swoops. Looking so evil 😂

In much of the world, as before, rough and smooth collies ARE the same breed; they occur in the same litters, etc. UK (and perhaps other countries?) decided to split the variety into two separate breeds (like the Belgian sheepdog/malinois/tervuren/lakenois variety split in some of the world today) The actual genetic difference is purely in coat length, and whatever genetics attach specifically to that aspect. So in the US, e.g. "collie" primarily means rough/smooth collies, while the Border Collie is generally specified for that breed. In the UK, I gather, "collie" most often is assumed to be a Border Collie.

Collie is an old Scottish word thought to derive for sheep/ sheep herding, so a collie dog is any breed of dog for working on sheep farms. Typically here in the West of Scotland the Border Collie is the prefered working dog for the shepards but have seen Welsh and Smooth Collies and some other (not collie breeds) dogs as well being used

HAHAHA Border collies must be THE number one cross breed where I live. The farm dogs escape and sow their wild oats, so there are collie cross all sorts. And honestly, collie crosses are the best dogs. They are pure mutt doggy dogs, clever and fun, but with some of the neuroses mitigates. Collie crosses make great dogs.

BCs are NOT more common as companions. Unless you count the sport people and serious trainers as companion people. LOADS of them continue to herd seriously

I think he's talking about percentages. There's only so many good options for herding breeds, but loads of options for pets/companions. Plus only the puppies with the most potential are kept for working farm dogs. The rest of the litter will find homes as pets.
