Creating interesting NPCs for RPGs and D&D is something many dungeon masters struggle with. There are four ways I've discovered that can help a DM make their NPCs more likely to appeal to players. Today we discuss 4 methods for creating EXCEPTIONAL NPCs in D&D, while I tell the story of GRANNY TITCHWILLOW, one of my players' favorite NPCs.

I haven't even finished watching. Tip 3 reminded me of what my brother did to us in his game. OK, so spoilers for anyone who is playing the Starter Set, Lost Mines of Phandelver. ... ... ... ... ... ... I don't know how much is canon and how much is my brother's own, but here goes: The party is ambushed by goblins, and they track the goblins back to the goblin cave, where there are "doggies" (watch wolves), a cave "room" devoted to "fud," where they keep their rations and supplies, and then there's the "big rum," where some more fighting goblins hang out, and they keep their weapons and finally "Da Boz" in the last room. We cleared this place out, no problem. Well, we nearly died the first time, killing the wolves, but we did manage to take captive a goblin, and question him and he drew us a Winnie-the-Pooh-style map. After a long rest, because we were nearly dead Level 1 PCs, we went back, to fond that the "doggies" had been replaced by three goblins in cosplay wolf ears and tails, and wearing the collars and chains, saying, "Bark! Bark! Grrrr!" and having someone else yell down the tunnel. "SHUT UP," thus rendering the guard-doggies useless. We killed them, and took the cosplay stuff. Eventually, after a memorable battle where nobody could hit the broad side of a barn, on either side, for several rounds, we finally defeated Da Boz and his minions. Later on, we were at Glassstaff's place, and we discovered a single, unarmored goblin being brutalized by hobgoblins. We killed the hobgoblins, and as soon as that Droop declared my fighter the new "Boz," we adopted him as our mascot. He's adorable. He LOVES potatoes, so when we found the room with all the crates and barrels, and our loot-hound asked what was in each one, the DM says that one of them has potatoes. Droop said, "I like potatoes." We immediately got two sacks of potatoes, one for the party, and one for him. "Here, be a good boy, and hold this, stay out of trouble, and it will be yours." Droop stayed out of trouble. His entire job for the rest of the dungeon crawl was to simply stay out of the way and hold his potatoes. Well, we've cut him in for a share of the profits and have decided to teach him how to read a cookbook, and learn how to cook his potatoes. He's our mascot. Cool, right! Well, on the way to meet the druid, we were ambushed again! Same place! We cut down the bushes, and then went to clear out the caves again. It seems that the goblin leader at Cragmaw had worried about his place, having not heard any reports recently, so they sent new goblins to run the place. We knew we had to clear it again. I won't go into the details, but suffice to say, we killed four bug bears, a goblin boss, three wolves, and eleven goblins in one big battle, because we scared the guard goblins, and threatened, "We are coming for your potatoes!" The bugbears, we could hear them coming, stomping in rhythm as they chanted, "Mashed potatoes! Smashed potatoes! Baked potatoes! PUFF!" STOMP. After the battle, we went to clear out the rest of the caves. We found three goblins asleep ("We're not on shift yet. Leave us alone") and in Da Boz's room, we found an unarmored goblin, who, after questioning who we were and threatening to send Da Boz after us, just as soon as he finishes saving the potatoes from the people who came to take... Oh. "Don't mess with me!" he says, waving his hand in the air. "This is mightier than the sword! I don't know how, but they say it is definitely mightier than the sword!" "Oh, wow! He's a goblin bard?" "He's wearing glasses." "He's a goblin ACCOUNTANT?!" We all burst out laughing more than we already were. Soon, we introduced ourselves, and asked his name, and he disclosed that he was "Youthere," and he had been sent with Da Boz to sort out the situation here. He had to send a report. He told us about his Coll Eee Gyu "I know how to read, and that is how it's spelled. Coll eee gyu!" back at Cragmaw, Heyyou. Well, obviously, we couldn't attack him, so now we have a mascot, and an accountant, who we will put in charge of sorting out the party loot into our personal shares for inventory (Droop is in charge of taking care of Hank, the mule. It's a boy's name, but don't tell her that). And we are making plans for helping Youthere, Heyyou and Droop to set up a restaurant once we have sorted out Cragmaw. And all because they were too weak and helpless to be anything but adorable. I don't know about Droop, but my brother has confessed that Youthere was made up, on the spot.

In my current game (a mashup of Carrion Crown and Curse of Strahd) there's a high-level antagonist whom the PCs got to meet when they were only 1st level. His family owns a vineyard, and at the village they met him in he had donated some bottles of "Adrissant Estate 4701 Pinot Noir" to the local tavern. That wine has haunted them throughout the adventure, appearing in key locations (and implicating that NPC in what was going on), and even in Barovia itself. My players have now decided that he's actually an interdimensional wine-merchant whenever he's not working for Strahd. Plus, because of a letter earlier in the game - which revealed this NPC to be something of a patriot - one of my players is also convinced that he's been charmed by Strahd and is determined to try to save/redeem him. For a character who has not has not had an actual presence in the game since a brief meeting at 1st level (the party are all 9th level now), he has been a highly memorable character who has both frustrated and intrigued my players in equal measure. They are likely to be encountering him at the Carnival within the next session or two, so it will be interesting to see how it goes...

I don't know if I agree that weaker NPC's are more loved, I think diversity in NPC power level is good. Arguably my favorite NPC from a campaign I play in is a powerful arcane AI. And another of my favorites is a very powerful evocation wizard. But also one of my favorites is an evil goblin slave we saved from his abusive master.

As soon as my group arrives into the wilderness they always encounter a group of rangers trying to hunt and trap different monsters , the rangers are ofc named Wild Bill, Buck, Jeff, Huck and Willy. (The sixth ranger called Trapper has sadly passed but the players found his diary in a dungeon and returned it to the rest of the rangers and was rewarded with moonshine) .

This honestly gives me the idea to help use Gorge, the Lupine Bulldog Bard, as an NPC companion. 1. He has a goofy deep voice that is a bit muddled becuase of his stature and his large jowles. 2. He does have a few secrest actually. He has a crush on a nobleman's daughter that the father dose not approve of but she still wants to be with him(which is a little less of a secret) but he also has had several rumors around him, such as him being bread with a crushed snout like a pug, him being a devil worshiper beacuse of his music of choice(he plays metal using a violin), but the one that is actually ture and one that people are more hushed about is that he is actually an Oblex Spawn who has all the memories, thoughts and emotions of the orginal Gorge and wishes to just live as Gorge the Bard and not as an Oblex. 3. In comparison to some things around him, Gorge is fairly week, though he is helpful as he is able to be supportive and is really good ad picking locks(mainly do to him being an Ooze in disguise and he can just pick them with no tools), so he would very rarely resort to fighting and instead just help with his music. Plus he does need the players help as he wants to prove to the nobleman and himself that he is such a good performer that he can infact bring in money enough to live off of. In fact the players can actually help him by finding the remains of his great-great-grandfather and finding his golden-fiddle, which was a magic item that was barried with him. 4. Hopfully this character works out that my characters might like him. He is a big nice fluff ball that just wants to play music for others to enjoy and he just needs a little help getting his music off the ground.

I actually did the stuff you described to introduce a Vampire : Lord Lazarus that was actually not entirely evil. The players were sought out and hired by an assassin's guild to assassinate a vampire that had left bodies in a town within their territory. The players are offered money and favors and they accepted, but after meeting and discussing with Lazarus they figured out that the vampire protected the town from the assassins and the bodies the players were told about were the bodies of would-be assassins. He than reversed the deal on the players hiring them to kill the assassins that hired them. They have yet to do so, but he didn't give a time frame, he just wants it done. I did this before seeing the video, but it is reassuring to know I made Lazarus and introduced Lazarus properly.

Here's a tip, the worse you are at voices the better, that way you don't have to come up with a unique voice. You can have a voice for your NPC and the note says "Sounds like Braveheart," now you know that means "sounds like Mel Gibson as William Wallace," but what comes out sounds nothing like that... good. Now your NPC has a unique voice that no one can say "Oh, that sounds like something!" and an easy index for finding that voice again.

Yeah, I don’t know why that is, with the helpless bit- you make them pathetic, there’s a good chance the party will just bring them along. Currently have two NPCs in my homebrew game that I was expecting to die but I’m kinda slowly trying to ease out of the party. The whole story is long but the short of it is, the party is after a gang called The Bleeders- and unfortunately, I did not hear about that tip on the group patrons when this happened; it would have saved me a lot of frustration with the events about to unfold. Two NPCs are important here- incidentally, both in the same encounter but one of which was going to be a more recurring NPC while the other was, literally, a female bandit (stats and all). On their second encounter, the group is fighting this recurring NPC, Noor (a Druid called The Watcher within the Bleeders, who’s relationship with the group is… complicated), and she tries to turn into a bird and fly off- ends up getting caught by a PC (Shade), and as the combat ends… well… Another PC (Bardou) who encountered Noor earlier in the campaign after the PC ate her birds, had an issue with Noor after she hired someone to rough him up as a lesson in humility. So he took exception to the Druid being involved and had some sway with the nearby town after he solo’d a troll (Wild Magic Barbarian and some strategic movement into a bonfire). So Bardou wanted this bird dead, but the other party members didn’t. After accidentally creating a moral dilemma and having two party members at their throat (Bardou almost killing Shade), they thought they had killed the Druid after Bardou lays into her- but I had planned for that. Later she ended up waking up from her spell (Feign Death is nice to get out of situations like above) and ended up getting depressed from the whole situation that occurred (She had a hostile and fearful opinion of Bardou through most of the game). Thankfully the rest of the party was a lot friendlier to her than Bardou (who ended up turning on the party later, but that’s another story) so they took her with them. What happened after that was the next NPC- an oddball in a group of ogrids (Ogre, orcs and goblins), who the party assumed was the commander in how she was giving orders more than she was attacking. This bandit (who I came up with the name Tamora), surrenders after the resident Gunsmith put a bullet in her goblin’s head and they gave her a leg injury. They patch her up and took her with them too. Their reason for taking in Tamora made sense at the time- one of the PCs contacts had involvement with the Bleeders and she decided that after things involving Bardou, they could use her to get more information about the Bleeders (which she does- and even gets them some extra gold and gear with another random encounter with the Bleeders). So she’s not very strong but she has ways to pull her own weight after taking in what the party believes about her and building off that. XD All with two characters I was half-expecting to die. ._. They still travel with the PCs and are actually fairly helpful, but I’ve been trying to slowly get them out of the group so the PCs can build their own unity with each other. It’s actually slightly tough, since half the party doesn’t really roleplay as much as others and while I have talked with them about how they can get more engaged, their styles just don’t mesh… Geez this went on longer than intended. .-.

How do all your players have the same facial hair? :P Also... are the White Knights at Gauntlet Hall an edited version of the Knights of Samular from Summit Hall in the Dessarin Valley?

My character like this is Granny Clay. She is far to helpful, and NPCs who talk about her all seem to have some tale of woe. Anyone in contact with her, or one of her associates can be found to have spiders hidden on them.

trope subversion is one of my favorite tricks for memorable npc's, like one time i needed a flirtatious barkeep that had some shady connections, so i made them an aasimar 😎

Is there any real efficient way you can learn to do voices??
@Reaper1785
@Reaper1785 3 жыл бұрын
Practice practice practice. Also, what's helped me get better, is by watching different videos with different accents and trying to parrot the way they say. Also, WIRED has a series where a dialect coach breaks down different accents and that really opened my eyes to how different and similar accents are, and that if you're good at one, you might be halfway decent at a similar one.

You dont need to be able to do Accents to be effective with voices. Altering the pitch/speed/inflection of your voice in varying ways creates all sorts of voices that are completely different. You can also add impediments, speech mannerisms and tics

Sorry to be critical - i typically really benefit from your content. But I’m 3 minutes into the video and between the skits and the sponsor promotion, I’ve yet to see or hear anything useful. You are a talented content maker, and your stuff really helps the community. Please take a step back towards the things that your following was based upon. We miss that guy.
