I too had such a badly herniated lumbar disc at L5-S1 that it was "displacing" the S1 nerve root. The pain was horrendous and I had lost strength in my leg. When I had the micro-discectomy, it turned out that the disc had literally rubbed a lesion through the dura (covering) of the nerve root. AGONIZING doesn't begin to describe it. 6 weeks post micro-discectomy, I was PAIN FREE and I was ready to get back to the soccer field and all other activities as well. It was AWESOME!! Well, it was awesome until some jerk ran a stop sign when I was only 6 weeks post-op, T-Boned me and re-herniated the disc. I had a second micro-discectomy of the same disc hoping to avoid a fusion. Nope, too much disc had been removed at that point and I am now 2 week post-op from the lumbar fusion (which makes three surgeries in less than a year.) Pain is diminishing, I've regained strength in my leg again, and I'm really looking forward to getting back to life!! I tell people to always avoid surgery. Don't do it. Well.... don't do it unless you are in so freaking much pain that you can't imagine going through life in as much pain as you are in and every other option you've tried has failed. THEN you will know it's time for surgery, and after the surgery, you will thank God for modern medicine and talented surgeons who give you the gift of living life again.

Loved all your videos, Dan! I now have a much better feeling of what to expect going forward to my L4-5 discectomy in three days. I'm an independent old nurse of almost 80 years, thinking that this would be "no sweat" compared to the back surgery patients I took care of 40-50 years ago. With this modern microdiscectomy stuff, I was reassuring my daughter with whom I live that she could return to work a day later without any worries about me taking care of myself. Whoa! Your videos certainly brought a dose of reality. If a strong young guy like you wasn't ready to take on the world yet by the 4th week postop yet, then we will have to predict some of the adjustments I need to be able to help myself while she is at work. When one reads the surgical centers' advice on what to expect postoperatively, they leave the impression that we can sail through recuperation with minimal inconvenience to our lives. Thanks so much for injecting humor into dispelling fear of the unknown.

Hey Dan. Firstly I want to thank you for posting the experience through your journey pre/post surgery. It certainly assisted me. I can absolutely relate to your comments regarding quality of life and existing rather than living. Also as previously stated I see energy radiate from you. I watched your video's and totally empathized with you. I have struggled with sciatic/back pain problems for 10 years. Had 3 MRI scans which identified disc bulge & spinal stenosis. This has led to 3 epidural injections, denervation and 70+ physio/osteo sessions. But more importantly poor quality of life, chronic pain & lack of sleep. 4 days ago I had Laminectomy at L2/3, L3/4 & L4/5. The surgeon said that this consisted of more bone removed from these areas than anticipated. The only pain I have now is from the surgery. I have no numbness or pain in my buttocks or legs. Which feels amazing! (or not as the case maybe). Early days I know, but I wish I had gone down the surgery route years ago. I feel positive and have a smile on my face again. The Surgeons instructions are no driving for 6 weeks. No bending, lifting or twisting for 12 weeks. A new chapter has started in my life :-)

Hi Dan.. First of all I just want to say what a wonderful energy and personality you have.. It really shines through with every video that you make! I really believe that making people smile is the essence of well-being so thank you first of all for that.. More importantly ( not just for me.. But many others too) I really don't think I would've been able to go through my surgery which was three weeks ago without seeing all of your videos! The information that you have given not just to me but everyone who has see them has been priceless.. not just the detailed information, video of the surgery, recovery process but also the comedy aspect you have put into them... Man you should be on TV ya so damn good!! For anybody reading this, I just want to 2nd everything that Dan has said in all of his videos... I know were all different and some of us may have complications... I had a swelling on my back near the incision 10 days after the surgery and I was placed on antibiotics for 10 days( after five days the swelling was gone) The doctor was unsure what it was it could've been infection or an inflamed muscle) ... But apart from that everything is the same and I am walking stretching and will start doing light physical therapy in the swimming pool.. This week (23 days later) I'm sure I speak for many people when I thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing this experience and in doing so helping so many people around the world! I've noticed that you have experienced another injury lately on you're knee .. So I Hope your recovery is going well.. A friend of mine who plays tennis had the same surgery last December and was playing tennis by February, so good luck with that, stay healthy..... And for GOD sake keep away from the soccer.. No more injuries!! LOL😆 I would like to ask you a question if you have time to reply I noticed that in your (four-month post OP video) you had returned to certain activities and then you regretted it in your next video!! I really want to start playing tennis or at least running..in about four months... from your experience do you think that's a possibility? My disc problem was in the same place as yours.. I know everybody is different but I just wanted your take on it! anyone having the surgery soon I wish u good luck and that everything will be okay, stay positive, be happy, smile, watch funny videos/movies.. there are some great meditation videos on KZbin or music you can download, which I have been using too apparently the frequency 528hz has a healing effect on our DNA.. It's worth having a look at it! Keep healthy and God bless.. 😃😗

Hello man, I am glad that everything is going in the right direction for you.I am also 4 weeks post disectomy at L3/L4 and L4/L5 and i feel great. I am doing daily walks since the second day of the surgery and i begun phisical therapy at home after first week. The second week i begun lifting weights again (no back squat or deadlift) and everything goes perfect. For everyone who has doubts in making the surgery, for me is a life saver. The last week before i haven't slept at all.Tried everything.

Hi Dan, thank you for the video. I have been in a horrible back+leg pain for 4 months now, it was terrible when it started coz i fell down..i mean all down and had no control over my legs..was admitted but mistake that was made was that X-Ray and MRI wasnt done. I have been living with the pain for 4 months now and i CANT bear it anymore, i mean any more... cant bend well, cant stretch well and the pain is always there, didnt disappear for once but at a minimal rate most times. I went to see a Orthopedic Doc 5 days ago and advised i do MRI, i did it and the result say i am having a posterior bulge of L3-4 compressing upon the traversing nerve root...i didnt understand whatever all these terms mean until he said Surgery is the only solution and i was freaked out and i am still nervous and scared...yes i am. I have been surfing the internet daily for a possible other solution aside from the Surgery but seems surgery is the only solution because i was told the bulged disc can never be pushed back in. My concern is i am so nervous to do the surgery but your videos gives me a go ahead and i cant wait to get it done coz the pain i am feeling is wicked. Thank you for the videos and yeah i will be back after my surgery. Oh plus i thought i dont need anyone after the surgery but seeing you walking like that on the day 1 after surgery make me feel like i'm stupid playing a strong man. Of course i need 1 or 2 people there with me.

Thank god for the interwebz. At the decision making point right now and all these positive KZbin clips have helped me decide to go with the surgery. 1 week of misery seems like a small price to pay compared to 5 years of pain - hopefully I haven't permanently stuffed the nerve! I'm pretty positive I herniated at least 2 discs from playing accordion. I was getting a lot of tingling and numbness when transitioning between standing and sitting, at least until recently when I jolted it really badly when I tripped over my friends backpack in the dark. The pain is very severe and runs down my entire right leg, I'm pretty sure I sequestered it, but whats odd is all my tingling and numbness is gone. I'm getting an MRI on the 17th and I'm thinking I'm probably gonna need what you got, especially if I did sequester the disc, but I really don't wanna give up playing the accordion. My band just released a hit record this month. I certainly don't wanna be out of commission for 6 months, or worse be told I can never pick up an accordion again from my doctor. It sucks because this is probably the closest I'll ever come to making an honest and stable career out of playing music.

I absolutely agree with you about getting an MRI rather than going to a chiropractor. My mom ended up finding a tumor on the spine of a schoolmate of mine who had been going to a chiropractor. Sadly, by the time they found out it was too late and she is now in a wheelchair (and kicking life's ass, she's a tough cookie). Keep up the great work. :)

I had the same surgery on a herniated disc in the L4 and L5 region of the back in June 2013. I had no lower back pain after surgery, I just have sleepy legs and feet because of the pushing on the nerve from the disc. He is right before surgery my right leg hurt a lot and I would loose feeling in my feet. I had the surgery done immediately after I was having Charlie horse pain in both legs that wouldn't go away. The surgery isn't bad and you do feel much better afterwards than before surgery.

Hey dan! I want to say thank you for your videos. I am having surgery in 4 days and im freaking out!!! I made the mistake of watching a video of the actual surgery and now im even more scared!! My leg has been numb for about 2 months now and I have 2 herniated disks being removed. I'm not sure how to feel about this. Im excited, but at the same time terrified! I work in the medical field, but when it comes to my own body it is difficult to accept. The question i have is...did you ever have back problems before your disk herniation? I have had back problems for about 12 years. I fractured my tail bone when i was in high school and it has continuously gotten worse along with degenerative disks. My worry is that the pain i have in my lower back and leg is the same as the pain i have in my neck and into my arms. Did you have any of this pain when your back and leg were still messed up? One last question, do you have a high or low pain tolerance? I figure if you have a somewhat normal pain tolerance I will be able to do this no problem. but if you have a lower pain tolerance....im a lilttle more scared! Hope all is still well with you!!!! :)

So technically what he's saying is to live with the pain until it heals on its own. Another option he mentioned was to do surgery. I'm only 20 and Im in college majoring in nursing. I feel like waiting will push back my plans on graduating college. My parents are really against me having surgery. I don't know what to do. Any advice?

Hey Dan. I had a question to ask you.. So I'm nearing month two after my surgery.. The only pain I'm experience now is just brief pins and needle pain in my left butt and hamstring when I move certain ways ... I've admittedly been slacking on my stretches and back strengthening exercises because I'm about to wrap up grad school VERY SOON. I feel more sore than outright pain before the surgery... I'm not as active as I was before grad school. What was your experience like at 2 months and could you share some tips on how to alleviate some of the pins and needle pain and the soreness?? Thanks so much. Very grateful. -Alvin

hey dude! I would stretch all the time... get a standing desk OR a workout ball to sit on, get a firm bed and drink a lot of water. I wouldn't stress out your body with too much exercise. it's alright if you're still hurting, it'll pass. it doesn't happen over night. you should talk to your doctor if you're still in a good amount of pain... feel better dude.

Hi matey... Meant every word.. U have a wonderful energy! thanks for your quick reply, you probably get thousands of day.. So I really appreciate your advice... However good the doctors are it's never the same as actually going through it yourself, so thanks very much!! I'm gonna follow what you said, I kind of felt that it was the right thing to do the doctor says I can go in the pool and just float for two weeks + walking, seems a bit drastic but I suppose it's for the best! I'll just have to watch my mates play tennis instead from the sidelines.. Lol Thanks for showing the physical therapy exercises in your video I'm not sure how quickly you started those? I'll try in about 2 weeks and see how that goes! Best wishes from sunny Tenerife, Spain! ... And get well soon.. Abrazo fuerte amigo

Hey Dan, after your surgery was it hard to go to the toilet for the first week?
@parANOia19119 жыл бұрын
Pob 1 i just had a microdiscectomy almost 3 weeks ago, the first week was much better than expected, i could go to the toilet, not the easiest thing especially if you are constipated but overall no big issues. The biggest issue is when you whip your butt p because you have to twist a bit but nothinh you cant handle. hope it helps

Elvia Friend that's because I think he is just an advertisement - he is not a man who has had an operation this serious speaking at 100 miles an hour to try and get the speech in, I believe this is as good as fraud!

Beck Jones I had the same surgery he did 4 days ago. I can 100% say that all of this is very real. Watch all of the videos he has posted about his process before you make ludicrous statements like that. I've gone through the same thing he has. And why would somone fake this kind of thing? That's kind of ridiculous hahaha

You guys doubting him are confusing his surgery (microdiscectomy) with spinal fusions or something else...this is a young guy that's in shape and did everything right to heal and get back to being active....maybe they think you're too good looking Dan, or the video came out too well, lol. Thanks for the videos, your sharing of experiences has helped immensely. Day eleven for me post op and I'm totally happy about the decision. I still have numbness in my leg and some pain every now and then but the pain is mostly at the incision. Things get better!!

If most of these people spent a minute in your body and felt what real pain actually is...especially the religious objectors of surgery...they'd be in the operating room in 30 seconds. Great news Dan. Keep it up!

I tell you something. Right now to actually fix your back for life there are only two ways. First is so called "fusion" which is screewing up your back even more if you ask me. Second is ADR which is a lot better coz the mobilty of the spine is preserved. Microdiscectomy is only a temporary solution to fix your pain but not your back. The pain will one day come back and you will suffer again.
