Its sobering that even an experienced sand driver can still have issues on the beach. Good advice about solo and trailers.
@mrcrazyman955 жыл бұрын
Terry Smith sand can get anyone at anytime. You can be on a soft beach at 15 then hit an ultra soft patch and go straight down. Or on Fraser and see a surprise washout at 70kph. Experience has little to do with it sometimes, just bad luck. (Although I never drive faster than 60 on a beach because washouts at speed are the worst)
@fowletm19925 жыл бұрын
Very little luck in it Ronny said himself rookie mistake Usually just a lapse of thought or laziness Iv nearly lost a car to laziness but never had an issue if I'm thinking about what I'm doing If your in unfamiliar areas then you need to go slower but I can do 120 on my local beach sometimes Don't fear letting your tyres down Somehow everyone thinks 10psi is too low You can go down to 6 if you have to I drive in very soft sand every day on your farm And go to the beach every day in summer Towing up to 8 tonne on the farm though sand with my cruiser
@fowletm19925 жыл бұрын
And driving at night is just making your life difficult Ronny has schedule to keep but if your on holiday just pull up and camp in the dunes before the sun sets

A good temporary get you home mod is to drill a small hole through the bolt ( threaded section) then put a roll pin, split pin whatever you have with you through it, much more reliable than the wire, ( just my opinion)

Hi Ronnie. I have been in super soft coarse beach sand and had to go 8psi all round to get through it. I was prepared to go 6psi if needed. You just have to be very easy on the throttle not to spin the rims in the tire or roll them off the rims. We get a bit of that sort of sand up Geraldton way in places. Admittedly the trailer would have been an anchor.

Great video to start the series. I’m sure you’ve tried this given your Google Maps waypoints through your website, but I have a new head in my Jeep Wrangler that has Apple CarPlay. What I do is have my Hema to one side and then download offline the Google Maps satellite images for where I’m going. I then use the Hema for tracks and contours but the satellite imagery to find my way through dunes and areas where Hema doesn’t have much. Just a thought.

Do you think drilling the bolt and inserting a split pin would have got you out of trouble?. If you had the tools. Love Kalbarie.
@macmurfy2jka5 жыл бұрын
Sharon Rentz i was thinking they could do just that! Either that or weld a blob on to act as a nut.
@Luca_Natoli5 жыл бұрын
Split pins usually are not that big. Welding machine weight a ton, and I doubt they have one on them. They have to use with what they have on hand. Doubt they had either on hand.
@Luca_Natoli5 жыл бұрын
@@jpeachy7251 what a load of BS. Welding with your car battery has a chance of blowing up your car battery. So yes, lets weld with our battery, then when it blows up we have bigger problems. Go look it up. They did not have a split pin that size. Go look when he opens his box. He used wire to make a nut, as you can clearly see. They did it the correct way.
@Luca_Natoli5 жыл бұрын
@@jpeachy7251 On stating that, drill A hold and place the fence wire through the bolt, that might work, so long as they dont drill to close to the edge that it snaps from the hole to the tip, especially under that much pressure. But those bolts are hard to drill trough, and unsure if they have the correct drill bit. The fence wire would be a far more superior choice over the split pin. The fence wire would not snap or bend out of the hole, so long as they went through the hole twice or more for extra support.

Good stuff & being bogged like that at the water line is no fun at all, been there done that travelling solo. If you ever make it to do the Robe-Beachport run in SA stay well away from the water line as it gets much softer down there on some of the beaches. How did the new Maxtrax with the metal studs hold up btw? My original set are almost done after the last muddy run so will need to replace them soon.

Thanks Ronnie and co., a lot of adrenalin in some parts! Some questions and comments; how heavy is the trailer loaded? Early in the vid, those undercuts in the cliff faces worried me. After your comment about moisture in the sand, I wondered if wetting the sand where you got bogged first would help...though being bogged later so close to the water kind of answered that question.
@jimnyjolly2785 жыл бұрын
Hey Ronny. Could you tell us why you don't use measured tethers on your max tracks so when you get free from being bogged you don't need to stop. (measured and tethered so they don't get caught under the trailer when you get out)?

If you have a power drill you can drill through the bolt and add a circlip style pin through it. While that shouldn't be the first option it's a tried and tested method if you lose a nut on a trip and don't have any replacement.
