Thank you for the fabulous scenery and the memories relived. 42 years ago I drove the first vehicle to retrace Madigan’s camel journey of 1939 - no lovely track to follow and compass only. It was an unforgettable journey of pure isolation. I didn’t realise back then that my association with the Simpson Desert would ultimately include a solo unaided (no back up vehicles) walk west to east across The Simpson. This would be followed a year later by another solo walk this time through its centre from north to south, a camel journey and over seventy vehicle crossings. At 87 years old these are my memories of a unique landscape of rolling dunes.

Hey Denis, what an incredible recount of your experiences, thank you for sharing. This one of the greatest trips I've been on. Such a pleasure to be able to experience this landscape whilst capturing its beauty for all to see. I can only imagine the challenges you faced re-tracing the steps of Madigan without any track. Thanks for sharing your memories!

Ronny you should do a "behind the scenes". Things like setting up cameras, how many you use on the convoy, and how you coordinate those stationary shots with the convoy of it passing by. It be interesting to hear some comments from the guys about what must at times be testing to the patience when it's running late, everyone is tired and hungry, and Ronny's gotta stop for 15 min to set the camera up. Stuff like that.
@MikeDonner6 жыл бұрын
They always seem to be arriving late to camp, that never made sense to me, until i considered how much time is probably spent filming all this. Those on the ground stationary shots of the convoy i cant figure out how they're doing it exactly. I noticed on this vid one convoy passing shot showing no tracks ahead of Ronnys truck, so he must have stopped and run ahead, but i was wondering who gets the camera, does he get it back right away, or are there multiples. There's a curiosity for the 'logistics' behind these videos...

Love the colours of the desert areas. Haven't done the Madigan but looks interesting. I did a deviation off the Birdsville Track onto the Warburton Track/K1 line to Poeppel, then across to Birdsville. A good drive as I only had my BT-50 and took it easy. That was late Sept. 2019. Keep up the adventures as I hope to continue to do. Cheers.

Madigan was a legend. Not only did he explore deserts (in later life), but he was earlier a key member of Mawson's antarctic expedition. We owe a to this generation of Australians.

During our Simpson Desert trips we found the camels were very shy, usually briefly seeing them in the distance as we crested dunes. But in the morning there was evidence that they had slept between our tents overnight. Kneel marks and droppings.

Alex McAllister they probably have other commitments to get back to. The last trip, Ann Beadell, they had permits to access different areas along the track. The permits had dates they could access the areas on so they had a deadline to meet. But I think if someone, like you and me, were to do this trips, we would be able to take longer and be able to set up camp in daylight.
@mini6966 жыл бұрын
Mate half the reason they get there so late is because they are enjoying the stops on the way too.

"Public open land" You mean like military zones and indigenous protected areas? Also I think you have very little understanding of political systems as having papers to travel were a requirement of the fascist system of Nazi Germany as well as the communist systems. Oppression is not limited to the left or right and travel documents are not always bad.

I have 2 questions,#1, where do all the bugs come from?, #2, if you have a major breakdown out where you are, what do you do?
@mini6966 жыл бұрын
Bugs are always there, they are attracted to us for moisture, and because of the rarity of animals out there the whole population finds us. Major breakdown is either fixed using their spares, dealt with by a bush fix, towed out, or return with parts.
