Thank you so much for making this video! Its very informative and very well explained! I was looking for wrist/arm techniques and this is by far the best and most practical video that I found. I've been playing piano for yrs but I never had any formal classes so I was never taught these things. When I started focusing on learning classical pieces that's when I developed tendonitis and it's very, very true that not having the proper technique really hampers everything. Unfortunately, I only truly realized and appreciate this now 😅 So now that I'm 'resting' I'm taking the time to go back to the basics and learn as much as I can on correct techniques

Thank you for sharing the brief and detailed ones on wrist motions! This lesson is so helpful on designing proper motions for phrases in different pieces! I would wish to learn this one earlier, so that I can improve sounds and micro-phrasing with both consciousness and subconsciousness.

Great lesson! As a beginner at the piano I really enjoy your in depth explanations and examples. I also appreciate the book recommendation. Can you recommend any other books that you've found particularly helpful or influential in your own playing?
@Dariafortepiano2 жыл бұрын
Hi Karl, Thanks so much for your comment! I can recommend many books, as I just did in the other comment, haha. Please take a look:) but for beginners I would start with simple 5 note exercises, which can be a first part of a larger book, like Hanon 60 exercises part 1 (feel free to play them in different keys if you know your scales already)., Czerny op. 599, Dohnanyi first 6 exercises. Simple scales and arpeggios in different keys, like those you find in Hanon part 2, or Dohnanyi ex 18-25. There is a separate book on single note scales by Alexandr Peskanov (the Russian Technical Regimen on the Piano, has several volumes. 🤓) I really like Czerny op 821 these are very fun to play and they work on different types of technique, so you get a well-rounded exercise routine, They also put musical challenges forward, which helps you develop awareness of phrasing, articulation, dynamics, improves hand coordination. Also for Beginners, I can suggest easy pieces by J.S. Bach, like little preludes, or Anna Magdalena Book, helps you develop polyphonic learning and thinking. I will probably make a video on the books of exercises, few people are interested:) Hope this helps! Cheers!

@Dariafortepiano2 жыл бұрын
Hey John, thanks so much for your feedback and question! There are a few books I can recommend, depending on our level, if you are already familiar with some piano techniques, but want to improve your skills: from easier to harder: Easiest: Hanon : 60 Exercises (Part 1: first 20) Dohnanyi: Essential Finger Exercises : nos. 1-6., no. 12-15 (difficulty level can feel different, I deem them doable for beginners, but it depends) Czerny op. 599 (starts easy, they gets progressively more difficult) More difficult: Hanon: part 2 (ex 21-43) Dohnanyi: anything else from Part 1 and 2 (until no. 26) Czerny op. 821 (involve different types of technique, I would say for intermediate players, great book! Includes very diverse technique, short etudes, not just exercises, fun to play!) More Advanced: Hanon: part 3. Dohnanyi : part 3 Czerny op. 740 (Great preparation for Chopin Etudes! some of them are very challenging! Also includes various types of technique) Brahms 51 exercises: VERY DIFFICULT to play well, but so beautiful! J. S. Bach Inventions (2 and 3 parts). I know it is not exercises, but they are also challenging both technically and musically, hand coordination and listening to different voices simultaneously will prepare you for Chopin Etudes too. There is ample literature on this, but these are my top choices, and I own those books, this is probably why I recommended them. Hope this helps! I should make a video on this! Thanks for the idea! Best of luck with your studies! 👩🏻🏫🎹

Great points, Daria. Thank you! I’ve been working with my teacher on developing my wrist movements, flexibility… Wish I paid more attention to my wrists when I was younger!
@Dariafortepiano2 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Bobby! Yes, wrist movements are often underestimated and viewed as secondary compaired to our finger movements, but they hold many clues to good technique and believe they are just as important.

Hello and thank you for the very informative lessons! Question, after looking up the book you are using there seems to be a book 1 and a book 2 available. Is your edition either of these or is 1 and 2 bundled in it? Thank you!

Thank you for your question! Hmmm...I only have 1 volume, and have never seen it in 2 volumes, if you are talking about the Conus Fundamentals book. ...sorry, not sure what to answer, since I only saw this one edition: Fundamentals of Piano Technique - The Russian Method: Newly Revised by James & Susan McKeever a.co/d/fOuv52Q

Hi Daria, I was looking for a video to help me because I've developed tendonitis in my right wrist and I'm assuming that it is from using poor technique when playing the piano. Your video is so clear and helpful. Many years ago I played classical music, but these days I'm practicing jazz. I think I know the answer, but do you feel that these techniques you are teaching apply to playing jazz piano too? I'm thinking yes because it's still using the hands, wrists and arms involved in playing the piano.

Hi, I am contemplating the issue of maintaining a single line for the finger, wrist, and forearm. When playing at the highest pitches on the keyboard in one position (no sideways needed), insisting on preserving this line seems pointless. Does the concept of a 'single line' only apply when moving the hand sideways while executing arpeggios etc? With a constant hand position, shouldn't we strive to have our fingers (excluding the thumb) parallel to the keys? Especially when playing at the lowest (or highest) pitches. When trying to maintain this 'single line' in those farther regions, our fingers are inevitably at an angle to the keys.

Sorry, at least the breathing you got all wrong. You exhale when you play with wrist moving downwards and inhale when letting go the keys or playing another note with the wrist moving up.
@Dariafortepiano Жыл бұрын
You are correct! Maybe I misspoke, but what you say is definitely true. When I say "exhale" as "release" the word "breath " is used metaphorically, not physically. Like when you talk you need to release the breath all the way before taking a new one. But physically it is just the opposite, as you say. When we play we give weight, as we go into the key, like realeasing air when we speak and then we take a new breath to start a sentence again. So when we release the wrist it is like exhale and then inhale again moment. I should have used a different term, I see how it is confusing. Thank you for your comment!
