40 Jahre Polarstern - Happy Birthday!

Das Forschungsschiff Polarstern ist das wichtigste Werkzeug der deutschen Polarforschung. Am 9. Dezember 2022 jährt sich die Indienststellung des Eisbrechers zum vierzigsten Mal. Das Flaggschiff des Alfred-Wegener-Instituts hat bisher über 130 erfolgreiche Expeditionen in Arktis und Antarktis durchgeführt und war ein Zuhause auf Zeit für tausende Forschende aus Deutschland und der ganzen Welt. Dabei hat die Polarstern 1,8 Millionen Seemeilen sicher zurückgelegt. Das sind mehr als 3,3 Millionen Kilometer. Es ist bis heute eines der leistungsfähigsten Polarforschungsschiffe weltweit.

The Research Vessel Polarstern is the most important resource for German polar research. 9 December 2022 marks the fortieth anniversary of the commissioning of the icebreaker. The flagship of the Alfred Wegener Institute has so far carried out over 130 successful expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic and has been a temporary home for thousands of researchers from Germany and all over the world. Thereby Polarstern safely covered 1.8 million nautical miles or more than 3.3 million kilometres.It is still one of the world’s most powerful and versatile polar research ships in the world.
