I mean I think that's obviously the reason why Toni is so crabby with her. Just a defense thing; don't let the perfect, pretty white girl know you're into her. And for Shelby, she was always curious about Toni. Even when Toni makes it clear that she doesn't like her Shelby still seeks her out. Just wanting to be around her.

you know something that I saw as significant was after toni says she doesn't have it in her to be scared about something that could be good, and shelby looks at her and then you can almost feel somewhat of a reluctance as she kind of eases her hand up to run her hand through toni's hair. i just remembered being closeted and from a strongly christian household with similar beliefs as her family's, that i used to fantasize about something as simple as running my fingers through someone's hair in that kind of intimate way where the other party is consenting and comfortable and not questioning or feeling weird about her doing that. like her feeling comfortable to show that kind of vulnerability and act on romantic feelings she's harbored for so long really showed that she is stepping out and it was probably so freeing for her.

you know some people say that shoni felt like a little too much rushed and maybe at a first look it seems like it but when you rewatch the show or just look at some video of their scenes you can see how especially from toni’s view there’s interest and even a bit of jealousy when she looks shelby helping martha. i think that shelby at first felt something for martha, a little crush who knows and at the same time toni’s feelings for shelby were just blooming can’t wait to see what the s2 could give us, i think the wilds in general is a good show but a bit underrated sob
